https://www.mining.com/web/idb-invest-t ... 0-million/IDB Invest to back Posco Argentina lithium expansion with up to $700 million
Reuters | August 28, 2026
IDB Invest, the private-sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank, will lead the financing of up to $700 million for a unit of South Korea’s Posco Holdings (KRX: 005490) to expand lithium production at its Sal de Oro project in Argentina, the lender said on Friday.
The financing would bolster Argentina’s role in the global battery supply chain as automakers and tech companies compete to secure lithium, a critical raw material for electric-vehicle batteries.
The project, in the northwest on the border of the Salta and Catamarca provinces, is expected to produce about 48,000 metric tons of lithium a year once fully operational and create around 620 jobs, according to an IDB Invest statement.
The package includes a loan of up to $250 million from IDB Invest, with a further $450 million expected from other international financial institutions.
The financing is aimed at expanding Argentina’s capacity to process lithium into battery materials. It will support the startup and phased expansion of two Posco Argentina plants, one producing lithium hydroxide and the other lithium carbonate.
Argentina, Chile and Bolivia make up the so-called Lithium Triangle, home to the world’s largest lithium resources.

https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/business/c ... er-lithiumLG Energy Solution signs 10-year US lithium supply deal with Smackover Lithium
By Lee Gyu-lee Published Sep 1, 2026
LG Energy Solution is deepening its push to localize critical-mineral sourcing in North America, securing a long-term lithium supply deal with a U.S. developer as it prepares for rising demand for electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage systems (ESS).
The company said on Tuesday that it has signed a 10-year deal to secure lithium carbonate from U.S.-based lithium developer Smackover Lithium.
Under the agreement, the company will receive a total of 80,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate over 10 years, with deliveries set to begin in 2029, when Smackover Lithium is expected to start commercial production. It said the volume is enough to make batteries for about 1.8 million high-performance EVs with a range of more than 500 kilometers on a single charge.
“The agreement marks another step toward establishing a solid and resilient supply chain that keeps our products competitive in key strategic markets,” said Lee Kang-yeol, LG Energy Solution’s procurement center leader.
“By bringing both battery production and sourcing to the United States, we will deliver competitive and sustainable products to our customers, driving the global energy storage and EV markets.”
Smackover Lithium, a joint venture of U.S. lithium developer Standard Lithium and Norwegian state-owned energy company Equinor, plans to produce lithium carbonate at its South West Arkansas Project using direct lithium extraction technology. The process extracts lithium from underground brine while reducing the environmental footprint of conventional extraction methods.
Lithium carbonate is a key raw material for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-cobalt-manganese batteries. Demand is expected to rise as battery makers expand LFP production, particularly for ESS.
LG Energy Solution said the agreement will help it secure a stable supply of U.S.-produced lithium while strengthening its competitiveness in the North American battery market. It currently has eight production facilities in North America, either in operation or under development.
The company also expects the local sourcing arrangement to help it meet critical-mineral sourcing requirements under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act.
LG Energy Solution has also secured lithium supplies through partnerships with major producers in other resource-rich countries.
It has signed long-term agreements with Chilean lithium producer SQM for 100,000 tons of lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate, and with Australia's Liontown for 1.75 million tons of lithium concentrate.

https://oilprice.com/Company-News/Vulca ... erial.htmlVulcan Starts Commercial Production of Lithium Extraction Material
By Charles Kennedy - Sep 20, 2026
Vulcan Energy has begun commercial-scale production of its proprietary VULSORB lithium extraction material in Germany, marking another step toward the startup of the company’s flagship Lionheart lithium project.
The material is used in Vulcan’s adsorption-based direct lithium extraction, or A-DLE, process to selectively remove lithium from geothermal brines. Production now underway will provide the initial volumes required to fill Lionheart’s extraction columns before the project is commissioned in the second half of 2028.
Vulcan said VULSORB has undergone years of laboratory and industrial-scale testing, including thousands of operating cycles. The company says the technology has achieved lithium extraction rates of as much as 95% under operating conditions.
The company has developed both the chemical formulation and manufacturing process for VULSORB and is producing the material through European manufacturing partners. Vulcan plans to continue manufacturing volumes over the next 18 to 24 months in preparation for Lionheart.
The move is also strategically significant as Western governments seek to reduce reliance on Chinese technology and supply chains for critical minerals. China, the dominant supplier of many direct lithium extraction technologies and materials, tightened export controls and licensing requirements covering some overseas technology transfers in early 2025.
Vulcan says its technology is backed by Western intellectual property and an ex-China manufacturing supply chain, giving the company greater control over a key part of its planned lithium production process.
Lionheart is located in the Upper Rhine Valley between Germany and France and is designed as an integrated geothermal energy and lithium operation. The first phase is targeting an annual production capacity of 24,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide monohydrate, which Vulcan estimates would be sufficient for batteries for roughly 500,000 electric vehicles per year.
The project is also expected to produce about 275 GWh of renewable electricity and 560 GWh of renewable heat annually over an estimated 30-year operating life.
Vulcan intends to deploy VULSORB beyond Lionheart across additional Upper Rhine Valley developments, including Project Ludwig. The company also plans to license the technology selectively to third parties through its VULTEC technology business.
That strategy could give Vulcan exposure to lithium brine projects outside its core German operations without requiring the company to own and develop every resource itself.
The commercial-scale manufacturing milestone comes as direct lithium extraction technologies attract growing interest from miners, oil and gas companies and automakers seeking new sources of battery-grade lithium. DLE processes are being developed as an alternative to conventional evaporation ponds, particularly for brine resources where faster processing and a smaller physical footprint could offer advantages.
Vulcan’s next major challenge will be translating its demonstrated extraction technology into reliable, large-scale production at Lionheart as it works toward the planned 2028 commissioning schedule.

https://www.mining.com/savannah-raises- ... m-project/Savannah Resources has raised $30 million to advance its Barroso lithium project in Portugal through engineering, permitting and early development work.
Staff Writer | September 23, 2026
The financing came as the company issued 408 million shares at £0.055 each. Savannah said it would also enter subscription agreements with institutional and individual investors, including four of its largest shareholders, to raise $11.2 million.
Combined with Savannah’s existing $15.5 million cash balance, the proceeds will fund early works including vendor data, fabrication notices for long-lead items and groundworks ahead of access road construction.
The company also plans to conditionally award engineering, procurement and management and bulk earthworks contracts while progressing front-end engineering design for the processing plant and infrastructure.
The fresh funds give Savannah additional capital to move Barroso towards construction following completion of a phase-one definitive feasibility study (DFS) in July, which outlined a 14-year operation producing an average 183,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate grading 5.5% lithium oxide annually.
...........................................
Barroso has been designated a Strategic Project under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act and is described by Savannah as Europe’s largest spodumene lithium deposit. The project hosts a resource of 39 million tonnes grading 1.05% lithium oxide for an estimated 411,900 tonnes of contained lithium oxide.

Geothermal Engineering (GEL) has announced plans to invest approximately $57m (£43m) in a new lithium extraction facility at its United Downs site in Cornwall, UK.
The project has received an offer in principle worth nearly £10m from the UK Government’s DRIVE35 Automotive Transformation Fund and will focus on extracting lithium carbonate from geothermal brine drawn from existing wells.
It is expected to generate nearly 50 direct jobs at the site while supporting approximately 80 further positions across the wider supply chain.
GEL aims to begin commercial operations in 2029, targeting output of around 1,500 tonnes per annum (tpa) of technical-grade lithium carbonate. This volume is expected to be sufficient for the production of batteries for more than 180,000 electric vehicles each year.
The company has indicated that the facility could eventually scale to produce tens of thousands of tonnes annually.
GEL CEO Ryan Law said: “Lithium is fundamental to the technologies underpinning the automotive sector’s transition to zero-emission vehicles.
“At GEL, we are proud to be at the forefront of establishing a new UK lithium industry, demonstrating how Cornwall’s geothermal brine can provide a reliable and sustainable source of this critical mineral.”
The investment comes as global lithium demand is projected to grow by 1,100% by 2035.
Authorities say the new facility will support the automotive, clean energy and advanced manufacturing sectors by strengthening the UK’s supply of critical minerals and reducing reliance on imports.
Cornwall holds substantial underground geothermal brine resources containing the critical mineral.
The government has pointed out nearly £230m of combined private investment flowing into two UK lithium ventures.
Tees Valley Lithium’s planned refinery in Teesside, which is backed by a separate offer in principle of £18.3m, involves an investment of £185m.
Officials state that these projects, supported through the DRIVE35 scheme and the Modern Industrial Strategy, are intended to reinforce the UK’s battery supply chain.
Other recent investments in the sector include more than £1bn from automotive companies such as Bentley, McLaren and Nissan.

https://www.mining.com/lake-resources-g ... argentina/Lake Resources gets environmental green light for Kachi lithium project in Argentina
Marina Meireles | September 29, 2026

Lake Resources N.L. (ASX: LKE; OTCQX: LLKKF) has obtained environmental approvals for its Kachi lithium brine project in Argentina’s Catamarca Province, transitioning the site now to its front-end engineering design phase (FEED).
The Catamarca ministry of mining issued the Environmental Impact Declaration (Declaración de Impacto Ambiental or “DIA”) for Kachi after the statutory public consultation phase and interagency evaluations were completed.
“Having our DIA elevates our position in ongoing commercial negotiations with potential strategic partners, off-takers, and export credit agencies as we work toward commercial execution,” Lake Resources CEO David Dickson said in a news release.
Kachi is now one of the few fully permitted, large-scale, independent greenfield lithium brine projects globally to reach this stage.
Shares in Lake Resources were up 10.53% to A$0.04 ($0.02) apiece by markets close in Sydney, valuing the company at A$107.7 million ($75 million).
The DIA
As the primary environmental permit granted by provincial authorities, the DIA confirms that Kachi’s engineering design, resource management plan, and sustainability profile comply with the environmental and social standards of Catamarca Province and Argentina.
It also adopted a 200m surficial exclusion zone surrounding the lagoon shoreline to define the spatial and operational boundary between project activities and the lagoon ecosystem, and established obligations that are expected to be completed before commercial operations start.
With the approval of the DIA and following the company’s social responsibilities, Lake Resources also committed to a contribution of $1 million to the Mining Royalty Trust Fund of Catamarca (Fondo Fiduciario de Regalias Mineras de la Provincia de Catamarca).
The contribution will be paid in installments from October 2026 through June 2027, and it’s expected to support infrastructure projects that will benefit local communities in the region.
FEED phase
With the DIA secured, Lake Resources is advancing Kachi into the FEED phase, which will use previous studies and engineering work done alongside Hatch and Lilac Solution to develop the site.
In this phase, the company will review and refine engineering solutions for the first phase of the project, secure suppliers and equipment, define construction logistics and operational risk mitigation plans for the project.
“This transitions Lake from a permitting focus to detailed project delivery and financing. It moves Kachi into fully permitted status, making the project shovel-ready and validating the world-class scientific foundation of Lilac’s Direct Lithium Extraction model,” Dickson said.
It will also be time for Lake Resources to explore and secure financial support, by providing detailed technical documentation to financial advisors, export credit agencies, and prospective off-takers and equity partners of the 25,000 tonnes per annum lithium carbonate equivalent commercial facility.
