NextDecade finalises EPC contracts with Bechtel for Rio Grande LNG facility expansion
The contracts have been finalised to construct Train 4 and Train 5 at NextDecade’s Rio Grande LNG facility.

Pradeep Bairaboina 13th Jun 2025

NextDecade has announced the completion of a pricing update for its engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with Bechtel Energy, covering the construction of Train 4 and related infrastructure at the Rio Grande LNG facility.

In addition, NextDecade has entered into a new EPC contract with Bechtel for the development of Train 5 at the same location.

Under the agreement for Train 4, NextDecade will pay Bechtel approximately $4.77bn. The contract’s pricing remains valid until 15 September 2025. The company estimates additional costs, including contingencies and financing fees, to range from $1.8bn to $2bn. For Train 5, the contract is valued at roughly $4.32bn, with similar additional costs anticipated. The pricing for this contract is also valid through 15 September 2025.

Progress towards the final investment decision (FID) for Train 4 is underway, with commercialisation completed and financing efforts initiated.

NextDecade aims to achieve a positive FID for Train 4 within the pricing validity period, depending on securing adequate financing. Regarding Train 5, NextDecade has signed a 20-year LNG Sale and Purchase Agreement with JERA for 2 million tonnes per annum.

The company is working to commercialise an additional 2.5 million tonnes per annum to support a positive FID, with financing processes already started.

In June last year, Aramco and NextDecade revealed that their subsidiaries have signed a non-binding Heads of Agreement (HoA) for a 20-year liquefied natural gas sale and purchase agreement.

This agreement pertains to the offtake from Train 4 at the Rio Grande LNG Facility, located at the Port of Brownsville, Texas.

Cheniere Approves Two More Trains for Corpus Christi LNG Expansion

by Jov Onsat|Rigzone Staff | Wednesday, June 25, 2025

Cheniere Energy Inc. said Tuesday it had made a positive FID (final investment decision) to add two “midscale” trains to the Corpus Christi LNG facility in South Texas.

The Houston, Texas-based LNG producer “issued full notice to proceed to Bechtel Energy, Inc. for construction of CCL Midscale Trains 8 & 9”, a company statement said.

The two trains will raise the terminal’s capacity by over 3 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa). In July 2023 the United States Department of Energy (DOE) granted CCL Midscale Trains 8 & 9 authorization to export to countries with a free trade agreement (FTA) with the U.S.

The DOE has yet to grant the project a non-FTA permit. However, the agency has resumed issuing final orders on pending decisions paused by the previous administration last year, in support of President Donald Trump’s “unleashing American energy” agenda.

Trains 8 and 9 will rise next to CCL Stage 3, which is also under construction.
