Huayou, EVE Energy to start $2bn nickel-cobalt smelter in Indonesia

Reuters | May 24, 2021

China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co said on Monday it would partner with companies including a unit of battery maker EVE Energy to set up a $2.08 billion nickel and cobalt smelting project in Indonesia.

Huayou will hold 20% of the venture and it is the cobalt supplier’s third major investment in a smelter in top nickel ore miner Indonesia, which is becoming an important centre for the nickel and cobalt chemicals used in electric vehicle batteries.

The latest site will be at Weda Bay on the island of Halmahera in North Maluku province where Huayou already partners with Tsingshan Holding Group in a nickel sulphate project. The project aims to produce around 120,000 tonnes of nickel and 15,000 tonnes of cobalt on a metal content basis, Huayou said in a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

EVE will have a 17% stake, while the other partners are Yongrui Holdings with 31%, Glaucous International Pte Ltd with 30% and Lindo Investment Pte Ltd at 2%.

Yongrui is wholly-owned by Yongqing Technology Co, a subsidiary of Tsinghan, the biggest nickel producer in Indonesia and the world’s top stainless steel maker.

“While Huayou is only holding a 20% stake in the project, we would like to highlight that this project is massive in size,” Daiwa Capital Markets said in a note.

Several other Chinese-backed nickel plants are under construction in Indonesia, including Huayou’s Huayue project on the island of Sulawesi with partners Tsingshan and China Molybdenum Co, which aims to produce 60,000 tonnes per year.

The first of the new plants, a venture between China’s Lygend Mining and Indonesia’s Harita Group, began production last week..

Huayou’s filing did not say when its latest Weda Bay project would begin operating.

Wyloo Metals, a unit of Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest’s Tattarang investment group, plans an unsolicited bid for the remaining shares of the Canadian miner valuing Noront at C$133 million ($110 million), or C$0.315 per share. Wyloo is Noront’s top shareholder, with a 23% stake as of December.

At stake is the future of Noront’s early-stage Eagle’s Nest deposit, billed by Wyloo as the largest high-grade nickel discovery in Canada since the Voisey’s Bay nickel find in the eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador, with an initial mine life of 11 years.

Vale announces first ore at Voisey’s Bay mine extension

17 June 2017

Image

Vale has achieved first ore production at the Voisey’s Bay mine extension. Home to one of the largest nickel deposits in the world, Voisey’s Bay has been producing nickel from an open-pit operation since 2005. The transition to underground involves the development of two underground mines.

Reid Brook and Eastern Deeps are extending the life of Vale’s Labrador operations and achieving production of 40,000 tons of nickel in concentrate at a peak annual production rate of 2.6 million tonnes by 2025, with about 20,000 tonnes copper and 2,600 tonnes of cobalt as by-products. The project is 65% complete, with executed capital expenditures of $1.26bn and Eastern Deeps start-up is expected for 2022.

Voisey’s Bay is recognised as the safest mine in Canada
“Our Voisey’s Bay operations, and indeed our entire operating footprint in Newfoundland and Labrador, represent an incredible story of Indigenous participation, economic capacity building, environmental responsibility and safety performance,” said Mark Travers, Executive Vice-President for Base Metals with Vale.

Voisey’s Bay Mine is a multiple winner of the John T. Ryan Award recognising the safest mine performance in Canada – receiving the honor again in 2021. Faced with the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19, the Mine Expansion Project followed suit, reaching first ore production with zero lost time injuries since construction began in 2018.

Image

Indigenous workers are key to Vale’s success

Indigenous participation is a hallmark of the Voisey’s Bay operation, enjoying a collaborative relationship with its Indigenous partners, Innu Nation & Nunatsiavut Government, on whose traditional lands the Voisey’s Bay Complex is located.

Since the Voisey’s Bay mine expansion project began in 2018, Innu and Nunatsiavut Inuit employment has more than doubled to approximately 500 employees and 65% of all procurement contracts for the project were awarded to Indigenous-owned businesses. The ability to mine and process ore from underground will continue to generate local employment, procurement, capacity-building and shared benefit for many years to come.

Nickel, Copper & Cobalt
Ore produced at Voisey’s Bay is processed at Vale’s Long Harbour, one of the world’s lowest emission nickel processing plants. The sustainably-produced, responsibly sourced nickel, copper and cobalt products will help meet future customer demand in the electric vehicle and clean energy space as industry seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower carbon footprints.

The production of first ore production at Voisey’s Bay represents Vale’s commitment to the continued delivery of quality, predictable and responsibly sourced material to market with safety, capacity-building and Indigenous participation at the forefront.

Prospect de Nickel - Cuivre et Cobalt en Finlande. Programme de forages exploratoires en cours. C'est le projet Hautalampi .
Resource estimate for Hautalampi Co-Ni-Cu project shoots up

MINING.COM Staff Writer | June 22, 2021

A recent resource estimate released for the Hautalampi cobalt-nickel-copper project in Finland shows that the total tonnage in the measured, indicated and inferred resource categories increased approximately 100%, while contained metal approximately 50% in the mine lease area.

Located near the eastern town of Outokumpu, Huatalampi is owned by private Finnish company FinnCobalt, which has signed a farm-in agreement with Sweden’s Eurobattery Minerals AB. As part of the deal, the latter has agreed to finance the development of the project and subsequently earns the right to purchase all FinnCobalt Oy shares.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of this now completed JORC-compliant mineral resource estimate of the Hautalampi project,” Roberto García, CEO of Eurobattery Minerals, said in a media statement. “Compared to earlier, historical resource estimates from the area, we can observe that the total resource tonnage has doubled and contained metal tonnes increased some 50%.”

This maiden mineral resources estimate includes the newly estimated Hautalampi area and its northeastern extension known as the Mökkivaara deposit area, which was the target of the year 2020 core drilling campaign. It is also based on a database containing ca. 82,000 meters, 457 holes of core drilling including 3,768 meters, 29 holes which were drilled during 2020.

In the measured category, the resource has been estimated at 2,582,000 tonnes, grading 0.38% nickel, 0.28% copper, and 0.08% cobalt. In the indicated category, the estimation is at 2,701,000 tonnes grading 0.31% nickel, 0.20% copper, and 0.08% cobalt. Contained metals have been estimated at 18,289 tonnes of nickel, 12,783 tonnes of copper and 4337 tonnes of cobalt.

“We have a plan for an additional core drilling campaign in the next months to close the gap between Hautalampi and Mökkivaara resource area,” García said. “We believe that with this additional drilling the tonnage will also increase in the future. The next step will be to use this robust resource base for the technical and economical evaluations of the project viability.”

The executive pointed out that his company’s goal is to help Europe become self-sufficient in ethical battery minerals.

Vale to invest $122m to extend life of Thompson Nickel mine in Canada

By NS Energy Staff Writer 30 Jun 2021

Brazilian mining company Vale has announced a CAD150m ($121m) investment to extend its nickel mining activities in Thompson, Manitoba, by 10 years.

The investment will be made in the expansion of the Thompson mine, where the orebody was first discovered in 1956 by Vale. Mining of the orebody commenced in 1961.

Vale expects the mining activities in the region to run beyond 2040, through an aggressive exploration drilling of known orebodies.

The company plans to invest in the first phase of the Thompson mine expansion, which is a two-phase project.

Vale base metals executive vice-president Mark Travers said: “This is the largest single investment we have made in our Thompson operations in the past two decades.

“It is significant news for our employees, for the Thompson community and for the Province of Manitoba.

“The global movement to electric vehicles, renewable energies and carbon reduction has shone a welcome spotlight on nickel – positioning the metal we mine as a key contributor to a greener future and boosting world demand.”

The first phase of the Thompson mine expansion will include critical infrastructure including new ventilation raises and fans, increasing backfill capacity and distribution of additional power.

The investment is expected to improve the production by 30%.

Vale North Atlantic base metals operations chief operating officer Dino Otranto said: “This $150M investment is just one part of our ambitious Thompson turnaround story. It is an indicator of our confidence in a long future for the Thompson operations.

“Active collaboration between our design team, technical services, USW Local 6166, and our entire Thompson workforce has delivered a safe, efficient and fit-for-purpose plan that will enable us to extract the Thompson nickel resources for many years to come.”

Sumitomo Metal sees global nickel demand for battery use to rise 18% in 2021

Reuters | June 29, 2021

Global demand of nickel used in batteries is expected to rise 18% this year from 2020, backed by strong sales of electric-vehicles (EVs) in China, Sumitomo Metal Mining, Japan’s biggest nickel smelter, said on Tuesday.

Sumitomo Metal, which supplies cathode materials for Panasonic lithium-ion batteries that are used in Tesla EVs, said demand of nickel used in rechargeable batteries will increase to 228,000 tonnes in 2021 from 193,000 tonnes in 2020.

Nickel is mainly used in stainless steelmaking, but is also a vital ingredient for the lithium-ion batteries used to power EVs, where demand is set to accelerate over coming years.

“Sales of EVs are growing very fast, especially in China, despite the covid-19 pandemic,” Yusuke Niwa, general manager of Sumitomo Metal’s nickel sales and raw materials department, told reporters.

“The recent drawdown in LME’s nickel stocks is seen to reflect rising demand for the metal used in batteries,” he said, pointing to a drop by more than 30,000 tonnes over the past two months.

The company also predicted that a global nickel market surplus will narrow to 58,000 tonnes this year from 132,000 tonnes in 2020 as robust demand from the stainless steel sector will offset higher output of nickel pig iron (NPI) in Indonesia.

Global demand for nickel is seen increasing by 9.2% in 2021 to 2.58 million tonnes, while supply is expected to climb by 5.8% to 2.638 million tonnes.

During the first four months of the year, the global nickel market saw a deficit of 34,900 tonnes, the International Nickel Study Group said.

“But we expect a surplus later this year as more projects for NPI production in Indonesia will start up,” Niwa said.

Japan’s demand for nickel is projected to rise 15.7% to 167,400 tonnes, while supply is forecast to fall 2.4% to 165,800 tonnes.

Bigger than Voisey’s: Canada Nickel files PEA for Crawford mine in Ontario

Cecilia Jamasmie | July 12, 2021

Image
Crawford nickel-cobalt project in Ontario. Image from Canada Nickel Company.

Canada Nickel Company (TSX-V: CNC) announced on Monday it had filed a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for the Crawford nickel sulphide project in Ontario, almost a year after exploration drilling began at the asset.

The PEA envisions a conventional open pit mine and mill that will produce both nickel and magnetite concentrates over a mine life of 25 years. The operation is set to generate 2.05 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne of nickel-equivalent production in the period — 93% lower than the industry average of 29 tonnes of CO2.

The study includes a downstream processing concept, which sees a third party building a stainless steel plant, likely in Timmins, which would be fed by Crawford’s high-grade product.

Over the 25-year mine life Crawford is expected to produce 842,000 tonnes of nickel, 21 million tonnes of iron and 1.5 million tonnes of chrome valued at C$24 billion ($19bn) using long-term price assumptions. Annual average nickel production of 75 million pounds (34,000 tonnes) with peak period annual average of 93 million pounds (42,000 tonnes), with significant iron and chrome by-products of 860,000 tonnes per annum and 59,000 tonnes per annum, respectively.

“We’re talking district-scale potential that would make this the largest base metal mine in Canada once it’s ramped up,” chairman and chief executive Mark Selby said in a May interview. “We’d be the largest single nickel sulphide mine in the world outside Russia. We’ll be bigger than [Vale’s] Voisey’s Bay. This is a pretty significant project.”

Canada Nickel already has a deal with Glencore (LON: GLEN) to potentially use the miner and commodities trader’s Kidd concentrator and metallurgical site in Timmins.

Crawford will be powered by zero-carbon electricity and use trolley trucks and electric rope shovels as part of the company’s efforts to minimize its carbon footprint through reduced diesel consumption.

Being a zero-emissions nickel producer would potentially put the company on Tesla’s radar. The co-founder and CEO of the electric vehicles maker, Elon Musk, offered last year a “giant contract for a long period of time” to any firm able to extract the battery metal in an efficient, environmentally sustainable manner.

Analysts and industry actors alike expect the market for battery-grade nickel to be in a tight balance in the next two to three years as demand from lithium-ion battery producers picks up.

Vale Indonesia eyes 2026 completion for nickel HPAL plant

Reuters | September 8, 2021

Indonesian nickel miner PT Vale Indonesia said it aims to start construction at its Pomalaa project next year to produce material used in batteries for electric vehicles, executives said on Wednesday.

Vale is currently amending its environmental impact study for the project and hopes to secure necessary permits for construction to start next year, Adriansyah Chaniago, its deputy chief executive, told a virtual media briefing.

“An HPAL takes a while to build. We plan for mechanical completion in 2026,” said chief financial officer Bernardus Irmanto, referring to high pressure acid leach process of extracting chemicals from nickel ore.

The plant in Pomalaa, in Southeast Sulawesi province, is expected to produce 40,000 tonnes of mixed sulphide precipitate, a component for EV batteries, he added.

Vale is also studying the prospect of mining limonite, which is found among its reserves and could be used in production of EVs, added chief executive Febriany Eddy.

Horizonte Minerals has secured approval from two export credit agencies (the ECAs) for $146.2m financing for its Araguaia ferro-nickel project in Brazil.

The financing has been approved by Denmark’s Export Credit Agency (EKF) and Finnvera, Finland’s Export Credit Agency.

It is expected to partly fund construction and development of the Araguaia project, which is 100% owned by Horizonte.

Horizonte CEO, Jeremy Martin said: “The receipt of formal credit and board approvals from two export credit agencies for the guarantee of a large component of the Senior Debt Facility is an outstanding achievement for Horizonte.

“The Senior Debt Facility is set to provide a significant portion of the funding required for construction of the Project.

“We look forward to announcing credit approval from the balance of Senior Lenders during the remainder of the third quarter, as well as further key financing milestones.”

Located south of the Carajás Mining District in the Pará State, north Brazil, Araguaia is said to be a Tier 1 mining project with a high-grade scalable resource.

The feasibility study (FS) outlines an open pit nickel laterite mining operation, with an initial mine life of 28 years.

According to Horizonte, a central rotary kiln electric furnace (RKEF) metallurgical processing facility will receive ore from the mining operation.

The project consists of two main mining centres that include Araguaia Nickel South (ANS) and Araguaia Nickel North (ANN).

Araguaia project is a Tier 1 nickel laterite mining project being developed in the state of Pará, Brazil. It is regarded as Brazil’s next major ferronickel mine and one of the biggest undeveloped saprolite nickel projects in the world.

Horizonte Minerals fully owns the tier-1 mining project, which is estimated to have a mine life of 28 years.

Feasibility study (FS) of the ferronickel project was completed in October 2018 and the construction license was granted by the State Environmental Agency (SEMAS) of Para in January 2019.
