Tesla bets on mining with Nevada lithium claim

MINING.com Editor | September 23, 2020

Tesla revealed its new ‘4680 cell’ at the company’s Battery Day, promising five times more energy capacity and six times more power than previous cells, key factors to fulfill its long-term objective to sell a low cost mass-market electric vehicle.

The company also said it is planning to build its own cathode factory in North America, and when Elon Musk announced the company’s claim on a 10,000-acre lithium clay deposit in Nevada, it signaled that Tesla is officially getting into the mining business.

According to Tesla’s estimates, using its new extraction and processing technology, lithium in Nevada would be enough to support the electrification of the entire US vehicle fleet.

“In about three years from now, we are confident we can make a compelling $25,000 electric vehicle that is also fully autonomous,” said Musk. The Model 3 available now is priced at $37,990.

“We’re gonna go and start building our own cathode facility in North America and leveraging all of the North American resources that exist for nickel and lithium, and just doing that just localizing our cathode supply chain and production, we can reduce miles traveled by all the materials that end up in the cathode by 80%,” said Drew Baglino, Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering at Tesla.

Many new methods of extracting lithium have been discussed in recent years as the needs of electrification have been realised. Most have numerous challenges.

“It would be surprising, although of course not impossible, for Tesla to discover the ‘Holy Grail’ of extraction so soon,” said analyst Wood Mackenzie.

Tesla said it will source spodumene from its own mine in Nevada without intermediaries.

Au Nevada il y le projet :
Clayton Valley Lithium Project, Nevada, USA
Mené par Cypress Development.

Qui est bien décrit dans cette page
https://cypressdevelopmentcorp.com/proj ... ct-nevada/

.
Cypress owns 100% of the Clayton Valley Lithium Project totalling 5,430 acres in southwest Nevada, USA. The Clayton Valley Project is located immediately east of Albemarle’s Silver Peak mine, North America’s only lithium brine operation, which has been in continuous operation since 1966. Exploration and development by Cypress has discovered a large world-class resource of lithium-bearing claystone adjacent to the brine field to the east and south of Angel Island, an outcrop of Paleozoic carbonates protruding up through the lakebed sediments.

Lithium mineralization occurs within montmorillonite clays throughout the sediments to a depth of at least 120 meters. Metallurgical testing indicates low cost processing can be achieved by leaching with low acid consumption (125 kg/t) and high lithium recovery over 85% Li. These high extractions prove the dominant lithium-bearing minerals present are not hectorite, a refractory clay mineral which requires roasting and/or high acid consumption to liberate the lithium.

Tesla’s lithium plan faces stark obstacles

Reuters | September 24, 2020

Tesla’s plan to produce lithium for electric vehicle batteries close to its Nevada Gigafactory faces stark challenges from the outset, including an onerous permitting process, uncertain access to water and questions about unproven methodologies.

Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk told shareholders on Tuesday Tesla has secured rights to 10,000 acres in Nevada where it aims to produce lithium from clay deposits using a process developed internally.

The move would make Tesla the first company in the world to commercially produce the white metal from clay. Lithium is produced either from brine, commonly found in South America, or spodumene hard rock, usually in Australia.

In Nevada, Tesla plans to mix clay with table salt and then add water, which it says causes a reaction where the salt would leach out with lithium, which can then be extracted. The leftover clay would be put back in the earth to mitigate environmental damage.

“It’s a very sustainable way of obtaining lithium,” said Musk, who did not say where in Nevada the company had obtained the lithium rights or whether development has started.

The plan drew backlash almost immediately, with critics describing Musk’s plan as too simplistic and light on details. Returning rock to the earth after minerals are extracted, for instance, is already common industry practice through the use of tailings dams.

“This plan from Tesla brings up a lot more questions than it answers,” said Chris Berry, an independent lithium industry consultant. “Are we just supposed to take Elon Musk’s word for it that the cost will be lower than existing lithium projects?”

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nevada already has several lithium clay projects under development, including one from Lithium Americas that has been seeking federal permit approval for more than a decade and another from ioneer Ltd.

Lithium Americas has said it is confident it can successfully extract lithium from clay through a process that involves acid leaching. Tesla said its process won’t involve acid, fueling further questions.

“If producing lithium in commercial amounts at battery quality grades from clay was feasible, why isn’t it already being done?” said Berry.

Any lithium project from Tesla would require an intensive application process for necessary permits that could stretch on for years.

“Mining lithium is very challenging,” said Pedro Palandrani of the Global X Lithium & Battery Technology ETF LIT.P, which holds shares in Tesla and lithium producers. “If Tesla really wants to fly solo, we’re talking about four to five years to really see any kind of lithium production.”

Tesla’s plan also would likely require substantial amounts of water, forcing the company to battle with cattle ranchers for access to underground reservoirs in the arid state.

Albemarle Corp operated the only existing U.S. lithium mine at a site roughly 200 miles (322 km) north of Las Vegas until it shut it down last month.

Operational since the late 1960s, the site produced less than 5,000 tonnes of lithium per year, a relatively small amount and far less than Tesla would need.

Piedmont Lithium strikes sales deal with Tesla

Sept 28, 2020

Piedmont Lithium Limited has struck a sales agreement with Tesla to supply spodumene concentrate (SC6) from Piedmont’s North Carolina deposit.

The Agreement is for an initial five-year term on a fixed-price binding purchase commitment from the delivery of first product, and may be extended by mutual agreement for a second five-year term, and follows the electric vehicle maker's announcement last week that it plans to mine its own lithium for EV batteries as it seeks to ramp up production at its Nevada Gigafactory.

The deal covers a fixed commitment for approximately one-third of Piedmont’s planned SC6 production of 160,000 tonnes per annum for the initial term as well as an additional quantity to be delivered at Tesla’s option. SC6 sales are expected to generate between 10-20 percent of Piedmont’s total revenues from its proposed integrated mine-to-hydroxide project for the term. The Agreement is conditional upon Tesla and Piedmont agreeing to a start date for spodumene concentrate deliveries between July 2022 and July 2023 based on the development schedules of both parties.

Keith D. Phillips, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented: “We are excited to be working with Tesla, which represents the start of the first US domestic lithium supply chain and a disruption to the current value chain. The Agreement highlights the strategic importance of Piedmont’s unique American spodumene deposit and confirms the trend toward spodumene as the preferred feedstock for the lithium hydroxide required in high-nickel batteries.

Piedmont plans to extract lithium from mineral deposits in Gaston County, 25 miles west of Charlotte, in what geologists call the 'Carolina Tin-Spodumene Belt'.

“We will now accelerate our mine/concentrator development to support Tesla’s plans, work to further expand our mineral resources, and potentially increase our planned annual spodumene concentrate production capacity. We will simultaneously be advancing our plans to produce lithium hydroxide in North Carolina, using a combination of internally produced spodumene concentrate as well as material sourced from other producers around the world.”

Piedmont confirms that all material assumptions underpinning the results of its previously announced integrated scoping study continue to apply and have not materially changed, including Benchmark Mineral Intelligence pricing and tonnes per annum assumptions.

Spearmint starts drilling at Clayton Valley lithium project

MINING.COM Staff Writer | October 1, 2020

Spearmint Resources announced that it has started drilling on its Clayton Valley lithium claystone project in Nevada.

In a press release, the miner said this drill program will follow up on the past success of its initial drill program targeting clay that returned grades as high 1670 ppm. The campaign is also expected to be multi-hole and more robust and may give Spearmint the ability to delineate a potential resource on its portion of the clay deposit that they share with Cypress Development Corp.

“This deposit is one of the select few clay deposits that exist in Nevada of which Tesla has publicly stated they covet,” James Nelson, Spearmint’s president, said in the media brief.

“There have been a lot of discussions recently regarding Tesla and what Elon Musk said about wanting to acquire Nevada lithium clay projects at the Tesla Battery Day held September 22, 2020, and their overwhelming need to secure domestic lithium deposits to feed their Gigafactory.”

The Clayton Valley lithium prospects are comprised of two separate claim blocks known as the Elon property and the McGee property which cover an aggregate area of 1,160 acres. The two blocks border Pure Energy Minerals’ Clayton Valley project and Cypress Development Corp’s property.

According to Spearmint, historic and recent drill programs in adjacent and nearby properties are suggestive of the potential for the discovery of lithium-bearing brines.

Turkey to kickstart 1st lithium production plant in Eskişehir

OCT 13, 2020

Turkey is set to begin producing lithium for the first time in a plant currently under construction in the central province of Eskişehir, the country’s energy and natural resources minister announced.

“We will start the production of lithium in Turkey for the first time with the plant of which construction began this year,” Fatih Dönmez told reporters on the sidelines of a visit to Eti Maden Technology Development Center on Monday.

The element is used in cell and battery technologies.

Turkey's inroad in lithium production will start on a small scale of 10 tons per year, but this is expected to rise to nearly 500 tons in the next two to three years, according to Dönmez.

Given that Turkey currently imports nearly 1,200 tons of lithium annually, it represents a considerable volume in domestic production and in import savings, which Dönmez said are more expensive.

In a later tweet, Dönmez said the country would start local production of lithium by the end of the year.

“We have started the boron lithium production attack. Domestic-made lithium will be used in the batteries of electric cars, phones and tablets. We will start production at the end of the year,” the minister said.

Le Lithium du Salton Sea en Californie.
A plan for 'Lithium Valley' begins to take shape

By Katie Fehrenbacher October 14, 2020

......
That would be the valuable lithium that lies beneath the ground in the geothermal brines of the Salton Sea. If you haven't heard of it, the Salton Sea is a 350-square-mile, shrinking lake that's a looming ecological disaster located a couple dozen miles south of Joshua Tree National Park.

Lithium is one of a couple of critical ingredients that make up today's lithium-ion batteries, which power electric cars, as well as our laptops and cell phones. A group of investors, policymakers, startups and energy providers are hoping to build a domestic battery manufacturing, mining and innovation hub around the Salton Sea's lithium, coined "Lithium Valley."

According to a new report out last week from the nonprofit accelerator group New Energy Nexus, a domestic battery supply chain anchored at the Salton Sea could generate billions of dollars and thousands of jobs for the disadvantaged Imperial Valley. These types of local jobs and resources are even more important in the wake of one of the state's most severe COVID-19 outbreaks this summer.

Millennial commissions lithium carbonate pilot plant at Pastos Grandes

MINING.COM Staff Writer | October 28, 2020

Millennial Lithium announced that the commissioning of a lithium carbonate pilot plant at its flagship Pastos Grandes project in Argentina is underway.

In a press release, the Canadian miner said that the pilot plant, located adjacent to the Pastos Grandes salt flat, is a full flowsheet design for producing up to three tonnes per month of battery-grade lithium carbonate.

Image

According to Millenial, pilot ponds filled with brine pumped from the central part of the project and in operation since late 2018, are at the required concentration to provide lithium-rich brine concentrate to the pilot plant

“Despite covid-19 restrictions and minor delays, the Millennial team has advanced the lithium concentration ponds and the pilot plant to the production stage. Evaporation ponds have been concentrating lithium and plant feed,” Farhad Abasov, the company’s president and CEO, said in the media brief.

“The first stage of the plant, the Solvent Extraction (SX) unit to remove boron, has been installed and tested. The first output of battery-grade lithium carbonate is planned for Q4-2020 marking another significant milestone for the company.”

Abasov said that, at present, the pilot plant is being fed with concentrated lithium-rich brine from the smaller feeder ponds which had reached a grade of 2.7% Li, and expected to reach the target 3% Li with naturally reduced impurities by the time the full flow sheet is commissioned.

Located in northwestern Argentina, Pastos Grandes covers over 12,619 hectares. To date, Millennial has invested more than C$40 million in exploration and development work on the property, which includes 22 completed exploration/monitoring wells, four pumping test production wells, pilot ponds, the pilot plant as well as a year-round camp supported by a hybrid solar power system.

Codelco to search for lithium at Chile’s second-largest salt flat

Cecilia Jamasmie | November 6, 2020

Chile’s state-owned Codelco, the world’s no.1 copper producer, will go ahead with plans to explore for lithium at the Maricunga salt flat, the country’s second largest in terms of reserves, after receiving the approval from local environmental regulators.

The exploration campaign, approved by the 10 members of the Environmental Assessment Commission of Atacama, where Maricunga is located, would begin in April 2021, Codelco said.

The copper giant plans to spend between six and 10 months on the field to determine concentrations of the battery metal on the 145 sq. km (90 square miles) area, estimate the size of the resource and identify necessary next steps, it said.

“Depending on the results, specifically on the concentrations of lithium dissolved in the brines of said mining properties, Codelco will define whether it is environmentally and economically viable to move on to the next stages of the project,” the company said in a statement.

The Santiago-based miner for years tried and failed to get into the lithium business, as plans to overhaul its aging copper mines took priority.

Regaining ground?

Chile holds some of the world’s largest reserves of lithium, a key ingredient in batteries for electric vehicles and high tech devices. But the nation’s output has barely budged in recent years, as constitutional restrictions reserving lithium production for the state have pushed investors to develop mines in Argentina and Australia instead.

Under a new lithium policy published in 2016, the Chilean government plans to boost lithium production by directing its state-owned mining companies to develop their claims over salt-flats in the arid north of the country.

In 2018, Codelco obtained special permits over the whole of the Salar de Maricunga and last year it entered talks with privately-owned Minera Salar Blanco to form a joint venture to mine claims held by both the companies in the area.

The Maricunga salt flat is far smaller than the vast Salar de Atacama (less than 5% Atacama’s size), where top lithium producers dominate.

SQM, the world’s second-largest lithium miner, also holds stakes in Maricunga.

Livent Corp said on Thursday it would form a joint venture to buy Canada’s troubled Nemaska lithium project and it had extended its supply agreement for the electric vehicle battery metal with Tesla Inc through the end of 2021.

The company also posted lower-than-expected quarterly results, and its shares fell 3 percent to $11.50 in late trading.

The Nemaska deal would help Philadelphia-based Livent boost lithium production as demand is expected to soar later this decade with electric vehicles going mainstream. The company has been openly searching for lithium deals in the past year.

Livent is joining with metals financier The Pallinghurst Group to buy half of Quebec Lithium Partners, which was formed earlier this year after Nemaska filed for bankruptcy projection. State-owned corporation Investissement Quebec will own the other half of the company.

“Livent continues to focus on strengthening its competitive position so we can support our customers with their future needs,” Livent Chief Executive Paul Graves said in a statement.

The Nemaska deal is not without risk. Livent only operates one lithium project, a brine facility in northern Argentina where an expansion project was recently put on hold. The Quebec project is a spodumene hard rock mine, an area in which Livent has little operational experience.

Nemaska also was weighed down by the high expense of operating in frigid northern Quebec. In 2019, for example, Nemaska announced cost overruns of more than $300 million.

Also on Thursday, Livent posted a third-quarter net loss of $11.8 million, or 8 cents per share, compared with net income of $18 million, or 12 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Excluding one-time items, Livent lost 5 cents per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of a penny per share, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Iconic encouraged by geochemical analysis at Nevada lithium project

MINING.COM Staff Writer | November 2, 2020

Iconic Minerals (TSXV: ICM) issued a media statement sharing positive results from sediment geochemical analysis from two core holes at the Bonnie Claire lithium deposit in Nevada.

According to the Vancouver-based miner, both drill holes contain intercepts of +1,000 ppm lithium and continue to show that results are consistent with those from prior drilling.

“Core hole BC2001C intersected 67 meters (220 feet) averaging 1209 ppm Li and contained a high of 1710 ppm Li. Core hole BC2002C contained a high of 1070 ppm Li,” the press release states. “Occasional lighter coloured sediments seen in the core may indicate some leaching of soluble elements is occurring.”

Bonnie Clare is located within Sarcobatus Valley, which is approximately 30 kilometres long and 20 kilometres wide. Quartz-rich volcanic tuffs that contain anomalous amounts of lithium, occur within and adjacent to the valley.
