Anglo American close to deal to rescue Sirius Minerals

By DANIEL BRIGHTMORE . Jan 14, 2020

Anglo American is likely to confirm a deal to buy fertilizer company Sirius Minerals for more than $500mn excluding debt, ahead of an early February deadline to finalise its bid.

Anglo said last week that it was in advanced talks over a 5.5 pence ($0.7138) cash offer for the venture that is Britain’s biggest mining project.

Sirius’ share price rose more than a third when Anglo announced its indicative offer and it closed at 5.4 pence on Tuesday.

Reuters reports that sources close to the matter said that a bid is likely in the coming days. The company has until February 5th to make a firm offer or walk away. Anglo declined to comment and Sirius was not immediately available to comment.

A deal would throw a lifeline to Sirius and is politically resonant as it would save hundreds of jobs in northern England, where the lack of opportunities was an issue in the election that returned Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government to power.

SEATTLE, April 03, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - The global potash fertilizers market was valued at US$ 21.64 Bn in 2018 and is estimated to exhibit a CAGR of 4.4% over the forecast period (2019-2027).

Potassium is one of the primary nutrients required for the growth of crops. Potash fertilizers help the crops to adapt to various weather conditions, increases minerals absorbing capacity, and also strengthens the tree stalks. Potash fertilizers also offers protection from microbial infections as well as other pests that hamper the growth of crops. Along with nitrogen and phosphorous, potash is also an important plant nutrient in the fertilizer industry. Moreover, increasing demand for food grains along with fruits and vegetables is expected to drive growth of potash fertilizers market, worldwide. For instance, according to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), world cereals production stood at around 2,653 million tons in 2018 and the organization forecasts growth at around 2.3% during the 2019-2020 due to rising global demand for cereals, which is a major source of protein.

.......

The increasing use of chlorine-free potash fertilizer such as sulphate of potash (SOP) in fertigation systems is expected to drive growth for potash fertilizers market. Potassium sulphate does not contain nitrogen, heavy metals, chlorine or sodium, and therefore it can be applied by drip irrigation, which aids in improving tolerance in plants against cold weather. Benefits of potassium sulphate fertilizer such as draught resistance, low salt index, sustainability for chloride, and saline soil sensitive crops, makes it highly important fertilizer among all other fertilizers. For instance, according to the United States Geological Survey, in 2016, the fertilizer industry in the U.S. used about 85% of the U.S. potash sales, and the rest is used by the chemical industry. About 60% of the potash produced include potassium sulphate (SOP) and Muriate of Potash (MOP), required by certain soils and crops

Kore wins 25-year environment and social impact permits for RoC potash projects

By David McKay -April 6, 2020

KORE Potash registered an important milestone today in its efforts to develop its 97%-owned Sinotoukola Potash Project in the Republic of Congo (RoC) after the central African government approved environment and social impact licences (EISA).

The licences – which have a 25-year tenure – were for both the Dougou and Kola parts of the Sinotoukola project. A pre-feasibility study on the so-called Dougou Extension (DX) is expected to be completed in the latter part of the quarter, the company said.

“The 25-year ESIA period is now aligned with the timeframe of the Mining Convention between Kore and the Government of the Republic of Congo, which was passed into law. This offers improved certainty for all parties and stakeholders,” said Kore CEO, Brad Sampson, in a statement. In the past, the RoC has granted EISAs for three year periods.

DX presents the quickest pathway to potash production and cash generation for the company and the larger Kola project is planned for development subsequent to first production from DX, said Kore Potash.

Pre-production costs at Kola were scoped by the French consortium at $2.1bn and although optimisation studies have lowered the capital cost, DX comes in at a much lower $200m. Kore Potash had asked the French consortium, among other companies, for a new proposal but said in January it had failed to extract an improved proposal.

In addition to working on the PFS for DX, Kore was also working on a mining convention which includes the transfer of the mining licence for DX with the RoC government.

The DX PFS is scoping a 400,000 tons a year operation – roughly half of Africa demand – over a 17-year life of mine, and generating annual free cash flow of $74m in that time. Payback has been put at about four-and-a-half years.

Construction nears at Colluli potash project following Eritrea ministry nod

Posted by Daniel Gleeson on 22nd July 2020

Danakali and the Eritrean Government’s plan to put the Colluli potash mine into production is accelerating after the Eritrean Ministry of Energy & Mines accepted the project’s Notice of Commencement of Mine Development.

Acceptance of the notice is one of the conditions precedent to the financing for the Colluli project and is a positive step toward achieving financial close of the project facilities, Danakali said.

Prior to issuing this notice, the jointly-owned Colluli Mining Share Company (CMSC) had satisfied several key Colluli development preconditions including executing a Mining Agreement and having a Mining Licenses issued; submitting and obtaining approval for the Social & Environmental Impact Assessment Study and Social & Environmental Management Plans; and submitting the commercial sulphate of potash production expectations over the life of the mine.

Colluli, owned 50:50 by Danakali and the Eritrean National Mining Corporation, has a JORC-2012 compliant measured, indicated and inferred resource of 1,289 Mt at 11% K20 equivalent and 7% kieserite.

Q&A: An inside look at Australian Potash’s Lake Wells fertiliser mine

By Heidi Vella 12 AUGUST 2020

Australian Potash’s A$665m Lake Wells sulphate of potash (SOP) project in Western Australia is said to be the largest resource of its kind in the country. As the mine edges closer to production, with the environmental regulator set to make a final decision by September, we talk to company CEO and managing director Matt Shackleton to find out more.

The Lake Wells Potash Project, located 500km northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia nearly didn’t exist. It was meant to be a gold-only endeavour until, in 2014, an estimated 18.1 million tonnes (mt) of sulphate of potash (SOP) was stumbled upon, somewhat by accident.

Now the project is anticipated to be a stellar fertiliser resource, with an estimated 30-year life and net present value of A$665m, plus three off-take agreements already announced. Regulatory approvals permitting, the potash will be exploited alongside the gold, which will be conducted by St Barbara Ltd. Drilling is expected to commence in September until the end of 2021.
.....

Matt Shackleton (MS): I joined the company in July 2014, which was, serendipitously, the same month we discovered the salt water at Lake Wells was very rich in potassium. And perhaps more importantly, was rich in sulphates, which enables us to make potassium sulphate, the premium form of potash, which is 99.9% used as a fertiliser.
......
MS: It’s a solar salt project. So, as the name suggests, it relies on the sun and the wind to do most of the refining of the ores of the brine. What happens is, the brine comes out of the ground, it’s very hot, it’s oily, and it has a total dissolved salt content of about 280,000 to 320,000 parts per million. So, if you think of the Dead Sea, this stuff is almost twice as dense as that
