Copper falls to lowest since June 2017 as trade war escalates
Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) closed down 0.9% at $5,632

Copper prices fell to the lowest in more than two years as an escalating trade conflict between China and the United States, faltering Chinese economic growth and a weakening yuan undermined the outlook for demand.

Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) closed down 0.9% at $5,632 after touching $5,624.50, the lowest since June 2017.

It was down nearly 2% over the week and more than 20% from a peak in June last year.

Gunnison Copper Project, Arizona

PRODUCER Of Copper cathode
Owner Excelsior
FIRST Production Q4 2019
ESTIMATED Investment $49m

The in-situ recovery (ISR) mining method has been proposed for the project.

The ISR method involves the drilling of boreholes, integrating both injection and recovery wells into the copper ore-body. A low pH solution (acid) is pumped into the injection wells to dissolve the targeted minerals. The solution moves through the rocks in a controlled manner to the recovery wells, and from there it is pumped to the surface for processing.

The copper-rich solution is then conveyed to the processing plant to produce pure copper cathode, whereas the remaining solution from the process plant is re-acidified and injected back into the wells.

Reuters | September 19, 2019

Peru expects its copper production to grow 27% and gold output to expand 12% in the next three years by 2022, the country’s energy and mines minister said on Thursday.

Peru is the world’s No.2 copper producer and sixth-largest gold producer.

Peru is on track to produce 2.5 million tonnes of copper this year, up slightly from last year’s 2.44 million tonnes, Francisco Ismodes said.

Copper production has surged 77% in the past four years.

“This has been our best year yet for copper production,” Ismodes said in a broadcast presentation at a mining event in southern Peru.

BHP to transition Chile copper mines to renewable energy supply
MINING

By Andrew Fawthrop 22 Oct 2019

The BHP Escondida and Spence copper projects will both be fully transitioned from coal power to renewable energy supplies by the mid-2020s

Image

BHP has moved to make a renewable energy switch at two of its largest copper mines in Chile as it seeks to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels for power generation.

The Anglo-American miner said it had signed four new renewable power agreements that would meet operational demand at its Escondida and Spence copper projects in the country, and transition both fully to green energy by the mid-2020s.

From 2022 onwards, the switchover will have the effect of displacing three million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually – the equivalent of the yearly emissions of around 700,000 combustion engine cars.

Renewable energy switch will displace CO2 emissions from BHP mining operations
President of BHP Americas Daniel Malchuk said: “These new renewable energy contracts will increase flexibility for our power portfolio and will ensure security of supply for our operations, while also reducing costs and displacing CO2 emissions.

“From a commercial perspective, these contracts will deliver an estimated 20% reduction in energy prices at Escondida and Spence operations.

“Good business considers the financial and social value in making decisions in the long-term interests of shareholders.

“This is an important step in our transition to sustainable energy use over the medium term in Chile.

“Our path to 100% clean energy in Chile began earlier this decade when the Kelar power plant environmental permit was switched from coal to gas, enabling power supply from lower emission sources.”

BHP said the specifics of the agreements include 15-year contracts for three terawatt hours per year (TWh/year) to ENEL Generación Chile, and 10-year contracts for 3 TWh/year to Colbún, following a tender process.

ENEL will begin its collaboration in August 2021 and Colbún in January 2022.

The miner said it will make a $780m provision in its December half-year financial results to account for the cancellation of the existing contracts which supply coal power to the two copper projects.

First Quantum’s Cobre Panama achieves commercial production

24 octobre 2019

Canadian base metals producer First Quantum Minerals has started commercial production at the Cobre Panama copper mine located approximately 120km west of Panama City.

Construction of the project was completed a month ahead of schedule as a result of quick and efficient ramp-up, placing the operation on track to achieve 2019 production guidance of approximately 140,000-175,000t of copper.

The project, which started on 1 September, had produced 87,142t of copper in concentrate by the end of the month.

Approximately 19,438t from the total concentrate produced in September was considered commercial.

Cobre Panama now has three operational milling trains comprising seven operating mills, while an eighth mill is expected to come online by the end of this quarter.

Until now, the plant has achieved a peak throughput of 220,000t/d. Throughput is expected to be running at an annual rate of 72Mt/y by the end of this year, increasing to 85Mt/y during next year with the eighth mill running at full operations by that time.

First Quantum said in a statement that C1 costs in 2022, when the operations at the mine is fully ramped-up, are expected to be $1.20/lb and all-in sustaining costs of $1.50/lb.

The company expects to reach annual throughput of 100Mt/y by 2023, resulting in copper production of more than 350,000tpa.

In June, First Quantum Minerals announced the commencement of copper concentrate shipping from the Cobre Panama mine.

The company said that the project is expected to generate free cashflow over its 36-year mine life.

First Quantum acquired an 80% interest in the Cobre Panama in 2013, subsequently increasing to an effective ownership of 90% in August 2017.

Korea Resources Corporation (Kores) owns the remaining 10% effective interest in the project.

Hannan Metals’ first mining concession granted at San Martin, Peru

By NS Energy Staff Writer 31 Oct 2019

The San Martin Project is located about 30 kilometres northwest of Tarapoto, in the Cordillera Ayu Mayo

Michael Hudson, Hannan’s CEO, states, “The sediment-hosted copper-silver San Martin project presents a new basin-scale copper-silver district in Peru. Granting of the first mining concession is a key advancement and provides secure tenure which will allow for more advanced social and work programs to be executed, including drill permitting. We look forward to further developing trusted relationships with local communities during our upcoming exploration programs over this large project. The next technical steps include further geological and prospecting with an aim to achieving drill permitting in early 2020.”
......
Hannan considers the sediment-hosted copper-silver San Martin project to be a new basin-scale copper (chalcocite) district. Initial prospecting over the last year identified high grade mineralization in outcrop and float with associated alteration across a 100km x 50km area. Best results from outcrop within a 20km trend include 3m @ 2.5% Cu and 22g/t Ag (LD190517-19) and 2m @ 5.9% Cu and 66g/t Ag (TC190536-38). Similar style of outcrop/boulders have been discovered over 100km of strike with mineralization observed at multiple stratigraphic levels spatially linked to salt structures.

Pan Global acquires new property in Spain

MINING.COM Staff Writer | November 8, 2019

Pan Global Resources (TSXV: PGZ) announced that it entered into an agreement to acquire all rights to the Al Andalus Investigation Permit, adjacent to the company’s Escacena project in southern Spain.

Al Andalus covers an area of approximately 3,367 hectares. It sits on the eastern extension of the Iberian Pyrite Belt and along strike from the nearby Aznalcollar, Los Frailes and Las Cruces volcanic associated massive sulphide deposits.

According to Pan Global, the property includes potential eastern extensions to the La Romana target, where a field team recently reported initial drill results of 20.55m @ 1.5% Cu equivalent, including 7m at 3.43% Cu equivalent.

The former Aznalcollar open-pit mine is within 600 metres of Al Andalus and the former Los Frailes mine is within 3 kilometres of the property boundary. Together, these mines contain an estimated 160 million tonnes of mixed copper and polymetallic ore. The Las Cruces copper mine, which hosts approximately 45 million tonnes of copper and polymetallic ore, including 17.6 million tonnes at 6.2% Cu, is also nearby, some 16 kilometres to the east.

Al Andalus is an advanced exploration permit application and it is currently in the public information and consultation stage. Pan Global believes that granting of the permit should be expected within six months.
