Brazil’s ethanol exports in December totaled 132.9 million liters, a stronger volume than anticipated by the market, according to data released by the Secretariat of Foreign Trade.
There were a few volumes sent to the US at the beginning of December due to a surge in US values in late November. Additionally, the plummeting Real-to-dollar exchange rate pushed FOB values lower over the month of December, triggering more business to be booked, particularly Grade B material to Southeast Asia.
The detailed destinations of December exports should be released next week by the Secretariat of Foreign Trade.
The December export figure is 44.5% higher than November and 38% higher compared with the same month in 2013, only the third time in 2014 that monthly exports were higher compared with the year-ago month.
Overall, 2014 exports were 47% lower than 2013 at 1.39 billion liters, the lowest since 2006 when Kingsman, the agricultural analysis unit of Platts, began tracking the data.
Among the reasons for the much weaker ethanol exports in 2014 were lower ethanol prices in the US amid a record corn crop which kept the arbitrage window closed for anhydrous imports from Brazil.
Furthermore, due to the intense drought that has hit cane-growing areas in the Center-South in the 2014-15 season — the largest producer and consuming region of the country — the main focus of producers was on hydrous ethanol for domestic consumption.
Looming concerns with cane availability kept ex-mill prices of hydrous and anhydrous ethanol higher for most of the 2014-15 season when compared with the previous crop.
