RWE awarded 900MW Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm in German North Sea

By NS Energy Staff Writer 11 Aug 2023

RWE has been granted the awards to develop, construct and operate the 900MW Nordseecluster B wind farm, which includes N-3.5 and N-3.6 sites, and are planned to commence commercial operation from 2029

The German Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) has granted RWE awards for the 900MW second phase of Nordseecluster offshore wind development in the German North Sea.

The Nordseecluster project is located around 50km north of the island of Juist, planned to be constructed in two phases, Nordseecluster A and Nordseecluster B.

Nordseecluster A includes two sites, N-3.7 and N-3.8, and Nordseecluster B includes the N-3.5 and N-3.6 sites, and all four sites are located in the BSH Cluster N-3.

RWE has secured awards for the development, construction and operation of N-3.5 and N-3.6 sites in Nordseecluster B, without a negative bid component.

The two wind farms are planned to commence commercial operation from 2029.

RWE offshore wind CEO Sven Utermöhlen said: “We are driving forward the expansion of RWE’s offshore wind power fleet in Germany at full speed.

“Our portfolio already includes six offshore wind farms off the German coasts. This auction success at attractive conditions significantly strengthens our position.

“It is also a good signal for the energy transition. Every newly built wind farm increases green electricity supply, which is crucial for lower electricity prices in the long term.”

Last year, the German utility has obtained rights to develop the N-3.7 and N-3.8 sites in Nordseecluster A, with a total capacity of 660MW, which will be operational by early 2027.

Considering the size of Nordseecluster project, RWE intends to achieve considerable synergy effects in the development, construction, and subsequent operation of the four wind farms.

It has already selected preferred suppliers of the components for all four offshore wind sites, with a combined capacity of 1.6GW, said the German energy company.

The German Federal Network Agency has also provisionally awarded RWE another site, dubbed N-6.6, for the construction of an offshore wind farm with 630MW capacity.

The N-6.6 is a pre-investigated area located around 50km northwest of the Nordseecluster.

RWE will further develop the project, subject to exercise of the step-in right by a rival company.

RWE, Vattenfall, Waterkant Energy win 1.8 GW German offshore wind auction

August 10, 2023 evwind

RWE (RWEG.DE), Vattenfall (VATN.UL) and development firm Waterkant Energy have been awarded four offshore wind farm sites in the North Sea in a tender worth 784 million euros ($864.75 million), the German energy regulator said on Thursday.

The companies secured rights to the areas suited to housing 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of power turbine capacity, the authority, which awarded the rights, said in a statement, adding commissioning was expected in 2028.

The allocation complements a 12.6 billion euros offshore wind tender for 7 GW that two oil majors won last month.

Utility RWE (RWEG.DE) secured 900 MW in the Nordseecluster B, which encompasses areas N-3.6 and N-3.5, some 50 km north of the island of Juist, which RWE in a separate statement said will start producing from 2029.

As RWE already won tenders for 660 MW of nearby North Sea offshore capacity sites last year, which it hopes to start up in 2027, it expects to achieve considerable synergies, it said.

In addition, RWE received area N-6.6, some 50 km north west of Nordseecluster B, where rival bidder Vattenfall has an option to exercise an entry right for co-operation with RWE, but Vattenfall must decide this by Sept. 14, the regulator said.

Area N-6.7 was given exclusively to Waterkant.

The rights entail development, construction and operation of the plants that are guaranteed to receive grid connections.

The regulator, called the Bundesnetzagentur, also said that 90% of the revenue from the tender will go to reducing power prices and the remainder on a 50/50 basis into marine protection and sustainable fishery.

The marine protection part must be paid within one year to the federal budget while the 90% must be paid from 2028 over a period of 20 years.

Whereas the July auction featured a dynamic bidding design, this time the regulator based its decision on what it called “qualitative criteria”: money, decarbonisation elements and the application of sustainable technologies.

Iberdrola and Masdar close €1.6bn alliance to develop offshore wind in Baltic Sea
Baltic Eagle will have 50 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 9.53 MW, built on monopile foundations

By NS Energy Staff Writer 03 Nov 2023

Iberdrola has signed a strategic agreement with Masdar, a major renewable energy group based in Abu Dhabi, to co-invest in the 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, located in the German Baltic Sea. Following confirmation that all the necessary regulatory approvals have been received, Iberdrola will have a majority stake of 51% in the project, which will help to accelerate energy independence in Europe.

According to the terms of the transaction, the valuation of 100% of the project amounts to around 1.6 billion euros. Iberdrola will control and manage the assets, providing operation and maintenance services and other corporate services.

In July, Ignacio Galán, executive chairman of Iberdrola, and the CEO of Masdar, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, signed the agreement as part of a broader commitment between two clean energy powerhouses. Both parties see this as a strategically important transaction and a critical milestone that strengthens a partnership that will allow further renewable energy investment opportunities to be explored across various technologies and regions.

Baltic Eagle will have 50 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 9.53 MW, built on monopile foundations. The project will produce 1.9 terawatt-hours (TWh) of clean electricity annually, enough to meet the demand of 475,000 homes and avoid the emission of 800,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.

This wind farm, which is scheduled to come into operation by the end of 2024, has a minimum regulated tariff of €64.6/MWh for the first 20 years. In addition, it has already sold 100% of its production with long-term contracts.

Glennmont, Ørsted start construction of Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind project

By NS Energy Staff Writer 12 Dec 2023

Located 70km off the coast in the German North Sea and expected to be fully commissioned in 2025, the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind project will be equipped with 83 SG 11.0-200 DD turbines, with each having a capacity of 11MW

Glennmont Partners from Nuveen, a fund manager investing in clean energy, and Ørsted have started the construction of the 913MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind project in Germany.

Situated 70km off the coast in the German North Sea, the facility comprises three offshore wind farms, namely Borkum Riffgrund West 1, Borkum Riffgrund West 2, and OWP West.

The three projects were originally awarded to Ørsted in auctions in 2017 and 2018. In September 2019, the projects were renamed as Borkum Riffgrund 3 with plans to build them as one joint project.

Once fully commissioned in 2025, the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind project is expected to become the largest wind farm by export capacity in Germany.

During the construction phase of the project, Jan De Nul Group will install 83 monopile foundations. The steel foundations will support as many SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbines, which will be installed in 2024.

Each of the turbines will have a capacity of 11MW and a rotor diameter of 200m.

Glennmont Partners acquired a 50% stake in the Borkum Riffgrund 3 project in February 2022.

The remaining 50% interest in the project is owned by Ørsted. The company will construct the offshore wind facility under a full-scope engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contract.

Besides, Ørsted will carry out operations and maintenance services for a period of 20 years as well as facilitate a pathway to market for power and green certificates.

Glennmont Partners CEO and managing partner Joost Bergsma said: “It is fantastic to see the construction of Borkum Riffgrund 3 commence, and Glennmont looks forward to its planned commissioning in 2025.

“The Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm is a landmark development both for Glennmont and for North Sea renewables more widely.

“It marks an attractive proposition for investors, providing over 900MW of reliable, clean, low cost energy, and will be a significant step in meeting Europe’s decarbonisation and energy security ambitions.”

Germany added 2.9 GW of onshore wind power in 2023, more than the previous year.
The total installed capacity at the end of 2023 was 60.9 GW.

By 2030, installed capacity is expected to increase to 115 GW. To achieve this goal, 7.7 GW must be added each year in Germany.

In 2023, the majority of wind turbines in Schleswig-Holstein (1.1 GW) came into operation.

During the year, 80% more permits for onshore wind turbines were also issued than the previous year. Around 8 GW have been announced and are expected to be installed in the coming years.

The Arcadis Ost I offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea added 300 MW of capacity. This means that approximately the same amount of offshore wind energy will be added in 2023 as the previous year.

A total of 8.5 GW of offshore wind power is installed in the Baltic and North Seas.

Germany launches 5.5 GW offshore wind tender

February 28, 2024 evwind

Germany’s Federal Network Agency has launched an offshore wind tender comprising a total of 5,500 MW in three areas in the North Sea.

The three sites are located about 110 kilometers northwest of Borkum, on the edge of the border with the Dutch exclusive economic zone.

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has carried out a preliminary investigation of the areas on behalf of the Federal Network Agency.

Essential information was collected, for example on the marine environment, subsoil, wind and oceanographic conditions.

These will be made available to all interested parties as part of the call for proposals.

Awardees no longer have to carry out these investigations themselves, unlike what happens in areas that have not previously been centrally examined, according to the agency.

The award of the seabed lease will be based on a legally prescribed points system. Up to 60 points will be awarded for the bid value, which reflects the bidder’s willingness to pay.

In addition, the so-called qualitative criteria will be applied.

The proportion of electricity from renewable energy sources in the production of wind turbines, the proportion of apprentices, the use of particularly environmentally friendly foundation methods and the scope of long-term electricity supply to third parties will also be assessed.

A total of up to 35 points will be awarded for qualitative criteria and 90% of the successful bidder’s payments will be used to reduce electricity costs.

In the latest tenders for centrally pre-examined areas in 2023, in which a total of 1.8 GW were tendered, total revenues of €784 million were generated.

Offers must be submitted before August 1, 2024. Once the offers have been reviewed and the award procedure has been completed, bidders will be informed of the decision and the bidding results will be published.

Those awarded the contract will have the right to apply to the competent Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency for a planning permit for the development of an offshore wind farm on the land.

In addition, there is the right to connect the site to be built to the electrical grid for the transport of electricity generated by offshore wind turbines.

In addition to the latest auction, the Federal Network Agency already launched a tender for 2.5 GW on January 29 in areas that have not previously been centrally examined.
