Maersk supply service entre dans l’éolien offshore avec les États-Unis

L’intérêt de Maersk supply service pour l’éolien en mer, manifesté dès 2018, s’est matérialisé dans un premier investissement. L’armateur danois se révèle être le client mystère pour la construction d’un navire de pose d’éoliennes annoncée par Sembcorp marine.

TotalEnergies remporte une concession maritime pour développer une ferme éolienne aux Etats-Unis

TotalEnergies a été désigné vainqueur par le Bureau of Ocean Energy Management de la concession maritime OCS-A 0545 aux Etats-Unis, à l'issue des enchères de Caroline du Nord. Cet appel d'offres pour le développement d'une ferme éolienne en mer de Carolina Long Bay, a été remporté par TotalEnergies pour un montant de 160 millions de dollars.

Située à une distance maximum de 37 kilomètres des côtes, cette concession s'étend sur une zone de 222 kilomètres carrés, permettant de développer une capacité de production de plus de 1 GW, soit de quoi alimenter en électricité plus de 300 000 foyers américains. Le projet a pour objectif une mise en service d'ici à 2030.

Cette annonce fait suite à l'obtention en février 2022 d'une concession pour développer une ferme éolienne de 3 GW au large de New York et du New Jersey.

The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced the first-ever offshore wind lease sale proposed on the Outer Continental Shelf offshore California.

In May 2021, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl, and California Governor Gavin Newsom announced an agreement to advance areas for wind energy development offshore the northern and central coasts of California.

The proposed sale is part of the leasing path announced last year by Secretary Haaland to meet the Biden-Harris administration’s goal to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.

Enel Green Power expands renewable and storage capacity in Texas

The Azure Sky wind plus storage project is located in Throckmorton County, Texas, with 350MW of wind capacity and 136.5MW/204.6MWh of battery storage capacity

Enel Green Power has completed the Azure Sky wind plus storage project and added battery storage facilities at the operating Roadrunner and High Lonesome renewable project sites.

The completion of Azure Sky wind plus storage and the addition of new battery capacity at existing project sites will support its ongoing commitment, said the company.

Located in Throckmorton County, Texas, Azure Sky is said to be Enel Green Power’s first large-scale hybrid wind project worldwide.

It features 350MW of wind capacity and 136.5MW/204.6MWh of battery storage capacity and is expected to generate around 1.3TWh of renewable energy annually.

Biden visits Iberdrola’s offshore wind farm in the USA

The three wind power plants promoted by the group in the country are under construction or at an advanced stage of development and represent an investment of $10 billion.
The facilities will have a capacity of 2,800 MW and will create 11,000 jobs.

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, today visited one of the facilities that form part of the plan of Iberdrola’s listed subsidiary in the country for the construction of offshore wind projects in New England. The electricity company chaired by Ignacio Galán will invest $10 billion in these projects over the course of this decade.



The three offshore wind farms are already under construction or advanced development, and all have long-term power sales contracts in Massachusetts and Connecticut. They will have a total capacity of 2,800 MW, create nearly 11,000 new jobs and provide emission-free power for nearly 1.6 million homes and businesses.The first of the three wind farms, Vineyard Wind, will be the first large-scale wind farm in the United States and will start producing power by the end of next year. Iberdrola is thus demonstrating its pioneering nature in this sector in the United States.

As part of the proposal made in the award of the third of the offshore wind farms, Commonwealth Wind, Iberdrola committed to develop Massachusetts’ first offshore wind cable manufacturing facility on the site of a former coal plant in Somerset, Massachusetts (Brayton Point), which Joe Biden visited today. The factory, which will create numerous local jobs, is expected to open in early 2026 and will supply cables to Iberdrola Commonwealth Wind projects such as Park City Wind.

Biden met with the Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, and was accompanied by 25 US authorities and businessmen. Also present were the President’s National Climate Advisor and former head of the US Environmental Agency, Gina McCarthy, and several members of Congress from Massachusetts. The US President’s visit to the future offshore wind cable manufacturing facility is a statement of intent for the country’s new energy policy.

The three parks

Vineyard Wind, with 800 MW of installed capacity and an investment of €2.5 billion, will be one of Iberdrola’s largest in the world. In December 2021, the company was awarded a contract for the Commonwealth Wind offshore wind farm in Massachusetts. The 1,232 MW facility, the largest offshore wind project in New England to date, will involve an investment of $4 billion.

Also under development in the same area is Park City Wind, an 804 MW project that will supply clean energy to customers in Connecticut, while revitalising the Port of Bridgeport, home to the operation and maintenance office and warehouse for the components for construction. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Wind powered 32% of US power capacity growth in 2021

Technological advancement, state-level policies and the federal production tax credit have fueled the growth of the wind sector, according to three reports published by the US Department of Energy.

Wind power accounted for 32% of US energy capacity growth in 2021, employing 120,000 people and powering the equivalent of 40 million homes, according to three reports released last week by the US Department of Energy (DOE). Technology advancement, state-level policies and the federal production tax credit have fueled the wind sector’s growth in recent years, says the DOE.

A total of 13,413 megawatts (MW) of new utility-scale land-based wind generation capacity was added in 2021, powering around 4 million homes and representing $20bn investment, according to the 2022 edition of the Land-Based Wind Market Report, prepared by DOE’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Engie remporte un projet éolien en mer flottant au large de la Californie

Le groupe français Engie a remporté aux enchères, avec sa filiale Ocean Winds, un projet de parc éolien maritime flottant d'une puissance allant jusqu'à 2 gigawatts (GW), au large de la Californie, équivalent à l'alimentation électrique de 900.000 foyers, a-t-il annoncé jeudi dans un communiqué.

Ocean Winds, filiale détenue à parts égales avec la société EDP Renewables, s'est vu attribuer le projet par le Bureau fédéral américain de l'administration de l'énergie dans les océans (BOEM), à l'issue d'un processus d'enchères présenté dans le communiqué comme "une première pour de l'éolien en mer flottant aux Etats-Unis".

Les droits obtenus portent sur une zone de 325 km2 à Morro Bay, au large des côtes du centre de la Californie, selon le communiqué. Le champ sera situé loin des côtes --à 90 km environ-- et très en profondeur --plus de 500 mètres-- dans l'océan Pacifique.

Quatre autres lots ont été attribués à d'autres sociétés (RWE Offshore Wind Holdings, California North Floating, Equinor Wind US et Invenergy California Offshore), selon le BOEM.

Au total, l'administration fédérale américaine proposait aux enchères cinq lots pour une production d'électricité attendue de 4,6 GW et une capacité de desserte électrique plus d'1,5 million de foyers.

Engie a précisé qu'Ocean Winds avait comme partenaire l'Office d'investissement du régime de pensions du Canada (Canada Pension Plan Investment Board), et le lot remporté avec ses partenaires par la filiale d'Engie a été vendu 150 milliards de dollars, selon le BOEM.

L'éolien en mer flottant est une technologie dont les coûts restent encore proportionnellement élevés même s'ils commencent à baisser et que la taille des champs commence à augmenter, a souligné Sergio Val, directeur général Engie Renouvelables en Europe, administrateur d'Ocean Winds.

Le secteur compte encore peu de concurrents -- seulement sept entreprises ont participé aux enchères en Californie-- mais il a l'avantage de proposer une "énergie renouvelable avec une faible intermittence", a mis en avant M. Val lors d'un point presse téléphonique.

Engie revendique pour sa part dix ans d'expérience et divers projets ou réalisations dans le monde, en Ecosse, en Corée du Sud, au Portugal ou en France à titre pilote à Leucate dans le golfe du Lion.

Avec le projet californien Golden State Wind et deux autres sur la côte Est, Mayflower Wind avec la Shell et Bluepoint Wind au large de New York et du New Jersey, Ocean Winds comptera désormais près de 6 gigawatts (GW) d'éolien flottant en développement en Amérique du Nord, rappelle Engie.

Le groupe français est également implanté dans l'éolien terrestre et le solaire en Amérique du Nord, avec plus de 4,5 GW de projets en opération et en construction, ainsi que 12 GW de projets solaires et de stockage par batterie acquis par le groupe en 2022.

Engie, ex-GDF-Suez, est le fournisseur historique de gaz en France, où il est également premier développeur d'énergies renouvelables.

Biden administration proposes offshore wind in Gulf

The Biden administration on Wednesday proposed the first-ever offshore wind power generation lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. In addition, California and Louisiana are joining Atlantic Coast governors and the Biden administration in the Federal-State Offshore Wind Implementation Partnership. These actions and new lease sales last year in the Pacific expand the map for offshore wind in America and support the president’s goal of deploying 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind by 2030.
