The residential and commercial sectors contribute 30% of photovoltaic generation in the United States
The pace of solar PV commissioning in the United States has increased more than one and a half times. The capacity of PV panels commissioned nationwide increased from 18.1 gigawatts (GW) in 2022 to 30.8 GW in 2023, with 8 GW commissioned in the residential and commercial sectors. This data is provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) in the January issue of Short-Term Energy Outlook.
American solar infrastructure can be classified into three large segments: installations with a capacity greater than 1 megawatt (MW), which are connected to the common grid; solar panels with a capacity of more than 1 MW, which are used for industrial needs; and microgeneration facilities, that is, photovoltaic panels with a capacity of less than 1 MW, which supply the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

The first of these three segments is the largest. The capacity of solar panels put into operation by US energy companies amounted to 11.2 GW of panels larger than 1 MW in 2022, up from 22.4 GW in 2023. A less important role in the implementation of large projects is played by the industrial sector, which had only 0.2 GW of photovoltaic panels with a capacity above 1 MW launched in 2023. A more important role in the development of the overall industry is played by the microgeneration segment (facilities with a capacity below to 1 MW), which represented 8.3 GW of solar panels. put into operation in 2023, of which 6.6 GW were in the residential sector, 1.4 GW in the services sector and 0.3 GW in the industrial sector.

The dominance of the residential sector is largely due to tax deductions, the rate of which in the United States increased to 30% in 2022. This has to do with the right of photovoltaic panel owners to deduct income tax. For example, purchasing solar panels worth $18,000 entitles you to a tax deduction of $5,400. The amount of expenses may include installation services for solar generators, as well as the costs of purchasing power batteries with a capacity of at least 3 kilowatt-hours. Tax incentives have caused a boom in the microgeneration segment: the capacity of solar panels put into operation in the US residential sector has increased from 4 GW in 2021 to 5.2 GW in 2022 and 6.6 GW in 2023.

In the coming years, this sector is likely to continue developing at almost the same pace. According to EIA forecasts, the capacity of solar panels put into operation in the US residential sector will reach 5.4 GW in 2024 and 6 GW in 2025.

A Native American tribe is building a $1B solar farm in Colorado

The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe is going to build the Sun Bear Solar Project, one of the US’s largest solar farms, in Colorado.

The up to 971 megawatt (MW) solar farm will sit on around 4,000 acres of Ute Mountain Ute tribal land, nine miles south of the tribe’s capital, Towaoc, in southwestern Colorado. Sun Bear will be around eight miles long and one mile wide and will feature 2.2 million solar panels. It’s also expected to create up to 1,000 construction jobs, 10-50 full-time jobs, and revenue for the tribe.

Tribal officials are working with global renewable energy developer Canigou Group to plan the Sun Bear solar farm, which will cost more than $1 billion.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is currently reviewing the project’s environmental assessment. Construction is expected to kick off later this year, and Sun Bear is scheduled to come online in 2026. The solar farm will connect to the Western Area Power Administration power line, but who the electricity will be sold to has yet to be determined.

Repsol completes the construction of Frye Solar in the United States, its largest photovoltaic solar plant

Frye Solar, located in Kress (Texas), is the largest solar project built by Repsol, with nearly one million panels, a total installed capacity of 637 MW and 570 MW currently in operation.
The facility has a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) associated with it.

TotalEnergies couvre le parking de l’aéroport JFK de New York de 12 MWc de solaire
L’énergéticien français a commencé à construire un système solaire associé à du stockage. Il fournira de l’énergie à l’Autorité portuaire de New York et du New Jersey et à Con Edison, ainsi que de l’énergie solaire communautaire pour les résidents de la région.

Le Français TotalEnergies construit une ombrière solaire de 12 MWc dans un parking de longue durée à l’aéroport international John F. Kennedy (JFK) à New York. L’énergie solaire sera associée à une batterie de stockage d’énergie de 7,5 MW/25 MWh afin de réduire la dépendance au réseau électrique pendant les périodes de pointe.

Le groupe assurera l’exploitation et la maintenance du système et a récemment signé un contrat d’achat d’électricité à long terme avec l’autorité portuaire de New York et du New Jersey pour la moitié de l’énergie produite (6 MW) par la partie du projet située derrière les compteurs.

L’autre moitié de l’électricité sera allouée à l’énergie solaire communautaire, qui sera achevée lors de la deuxième phase du projet. Il est prévu de fournir de l’énergie au fournisseur Con Edison par l’intermédiaire du programme de production décentralisée de l’État de New York et de garantir des économies sur les factures d’électricité pendant 25 ans à des ménages historiquement défavorisés et touchés par des problèmes environnementaux, situés dans les communautés voisines du Queens.

Selon des informations fournies à pv magazine, que le projet sera construit sur un auvent avec une conception de vagues personnalisée. Il comprendra 32 000 modules solaires Sunpower et 164 onduleurs SMA. Il y aura également cinq systèmes de stockage d’énergie par batterie Tesla Megapack. Il sera mis en service par phases en 2025 et 2026. TotalEnergies dispose d’un portefeuille de projets solaires à grande échelle, de stockage sur batterie, de production solaire distribuée B2B sur site et d’autres projets renouvelables qui devraient générer jusqu’à 10 GW d’énergie propre d’ici 2025 et plus de 25 GW d’ici 2030.

L’année dernière, un autre projet solaire a été annoncé pour l’aéroport international JFK. Le projet de micro-réseau du nouveau Terminal One comprendra 11,34 MW d’énergie solaire sur le toit avec 2 MW/4 MWh de batteries lithium-ion et 3,68 MW de production combinée de chaleur et d’électricité (gaz naturel renouvelable) et de piles à combustible à hydrogène. L’électricité produite par le projet devrait répondre à 90 % des besoins électriques du terminal.
