Invenergy unveils 1.3GW solar project, set to be US’ largest

By Jules Scully Nov 19, 2020

Google and Honda will be among the offtakers of a 1,310MW PV project to be constructed by Invenergy that is set to be the largest solar generation facility in the US when complete.

Currently under development in northeast Texas, the Samson Solar Energy Center represents a US$1.6 billion capital investment and will support up to 600 jobs over the course of its 36-month construction period, according to Invenergy.

The announcement sees Samson take the title of largest planned US solar project from the Gemini facility, a 690MW development under construction in Nevada that will also feature 380MW / 1,400MWh of battery energy storage.

Samson will be constructed in five phases over the next three years, with each commencing operations upon completion. The full facility is slated to be operational in 2023.

The largest portion of the facility’s power output will go to telecoms and entertainment giant AT&T, which has secured a purchase agreement for 500MW – a figure the company says represents the largest corporate solar deal in the US.

Honda is the next biggest offtaker with 200MW, followed by McDonald's with 160MW and Google with 100MW. Three Texas municipalities will secure 215MW from the project.

https://energieetenvironnement.com/2020 ... tats-unis/

Largest US solar manufacturer to double its production with a new factory

Michelle Lewis - Jun. 9th 2021

First Solar, the largest US-owned solar panel manufacturer, today announced that it’s opening a third manufacturing plant in Ohio in the first half of 2023.

New Ohio solar factory

The $680 million factory in Lake Township, near Toledo, is expected to initially produce enough solar panels to produce 3.3 gigawatts direct current of power annually. That represents “an implied capital expenditure of approximately $0.20 per watt,” according to First Solar.

Once the new facility is fully operational, the three factories together will manufacture panels that could generate a total of 6 gigawatts of direct current. First Solar states that it believes that will make it “the largest fully vertically integrated solar manufacturing complex outside of China.”

First Solar expects to produce an average of one module around every 2.75 seconds across its three factories.

The company currently employs 1,600 people at its existing two Ohio factories and plans to hire 500 people for the new factory.

Crystalline-silicon technology, which mostly comes from China, is not used in First Solar’s thin-film photovoltaic panels.
............

But even with the three Ohio factories, First Solar would still import 40% of its panels from its factories in Vietnam and Malaysia, according to the Wall Street Journal, which continues:

Doral Renewables breaks ground on Mammoth Solar project, US’ largest PV development

ByLiam Stoker October 15, 2021

Doral Renewables has broken ground on the 1.65GWdc Mammoth Solar project in Indiana, set to be the US’ largest solar farm once complete.

Yesterday Doral hosted stakeholders, officials and local politicians at a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on the project in Starke County, Indiana.

The first phase of the Mammoth Solar project, Mammoth Solar I, is to have a capacity of 480MWdc, and development is to be followed swiftly by a second phase with a slated generation capacity of 360MWdc.

AEP Energy, the energy supply division of utility giant American Electric Power, has been confirmed as the offtaker for both of the initial phases of the project.

Mammoth Solar II is expected to begin construction early next year.

Mammoth Solar I is coming forward using Nextracker tracker solutions and Risen bifacial solar modules.

Governor of Indiana Eric Holcomb confirmed his presence at the groundbreaking ceremony on Twitter, where he heralded Doral Renewables’ “significant” investment in the state for creating jobs for local residents and providing renewable power for the Midwest region.

“Today is more proof that Indiana will continue to play a key role in the global energy sector, with clean, renewable energy sources for generations of Hoosiers to come,” he said.

Batteries at world’s largest solar-plus-storage project supplying California community energy group

By Andy Colthorpe November 12, 2021

Image
Rendering of the Edwards Sanborn project in Kern County, California. Image: Terra-Gen / CPA.

Battery capacity has started to come online at what is claimed to be the world’s largest project to combine solar PV and battery storage at the same site, in California.

The Edwards Sanborn Solar-plus-Storage facility in California’s Kern County is planned to include 760MW of solar PV and 2,445MWh of battery storage when fully complete. It actually combines both standalone battery storage capacity and batteries directly charged from solar PV. Developer Terra-Gen and its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner Mortenson began construction towards the end of 2020.

Building and financing the project in phases. In August, Terra-Gen said the US$804 million of required financing was complete for the initial phase of 346MWac solar and 1,501MWh of battery storage. The developer’s schedule accounted for the first 735MWh of battery storage to be completed by the end of the third quarter of this year, and the rest of the first phase to be online by Q2 2022.

The rest will be financed and brought online in 2022 and 2023. Contracts have been signed with numerous off-takers, including coffee and pumpkin spice latte merchant Starbucks, which is purchasing 24MW of solar and 5.5MW of battery storage output from the facility to help provide power for some of its California stores.
