Stable perovskite solar cells move closer to commercial reality

February 11, 2018 // By Nick Flaherty

Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have developed an environmentally stable perovskite solar cell that provides a key step to commercial production.

Perovskite photovoltaic cells are much cheaper to produce, and have reached conversion efficiencies of 23 percent, matching that of silicon cells. However, the durability and lifetime of the cells has been a problem. The team at NREL has developed an unencapsulated cell that maintained 94 percent of its starting efficiency after 1,000 hours of continuous use under ambient conditions, according to research published in Nature Energy. This new cell has a starting conversion efficiency of just over 16%.

“During testing, we intentionally stress the cells somewhat harder than real-world applications in an effort to speed up the aging,” said NREL researcher Joseph Luther. “A solar cell in the field only operates when the sun is out, typically. In this case, even after 1,000 straight hours of testing the cell was able to generate power the whole time.”

While more testing is needed to prove the cells could survive for 20 years or more in the field for commercial use, and the actual efficiency figures for the new structure are slightly lower than existing designs, this is a key step forward in making commercially viable solar cells.

A typical organic perovskite solar cell sandwiches the perovskite material between a hole transport material, a thin film of an organic molecule called spiro-OMeTAD doped with lithium ions and an electron transport layer made of titanium dioxide (TiO2).

“What we are trying to do is eliminate the weakest links in the solar cell,” said Luther. The team replaced the spiro-OMeTAD with a different organic material called EH44, developed by Alan Sellinger at the Colorado School of Mines, that doesn’t contain lithium and repels the water that causes the charge to leak.

“Those two benefits led us to believe this material would be a better replacement,” said Luther.

Using EH44 as the top layer resolved the later more gradual degradation but did not solve the initial fast decreases that were seen in the cell’s efficiency. Swapping the
bottom layer of TiO2 for tin oxide (SnO2) resolve chemical structure issues in the perovskite layer when deposited onto the original TiO2 film. The efficiency of the cell with the new structure is just over 16%, compared to 17% for the spiro-OMeTAD, so the conversion is comparable while the stability is considerably higher.
“This study reveals how to make the devices far more stable,” said Luther. “It shows us that each of the layers in the cell can play an important role in degradation, not just the active perovskite layer.”

New record for large panel perovskite solar module

April 16, 2018 // By Nick Flaherty

Image

Solliance has demonstrated a new record cell performance of 14.5% for a large thin-film perovskite photovoltaic module built on a glass substrate.

The efficiency was measured on an aperture area of 144 cm 2 with the module built on a commercial 6x6 in 2 glass substrate, comparable to standard commercial silicon solar cells. The substrate used a transparent conductor that was applied with three consecutive slot die coating processes and a newly developed annealing process. The metal electrode was evaporated onto the top of the module..

Twenty-four cells were series-connected through optimized laser based scribes, leaving 95% of the modules area covered with active material, resulting in a stabilized module efficiency of 13.8%.

Individual reference cells, spin coated and slot die coated, with the same device architecture showed cell performances of 14.5%. This aligns with the measured cell performance on the modules developed by the alliance of leading European material and solar panel makers. This means that only the interconnection area contributes to the observed performance loss from cell-to-module. Ten modules were produced and showed high stabilized module efficiency numbers, indicating the production process is capable of high yields.

A key point is that all the layers can be processed in ambient environment and at temperatures below 120⁰C, apart from the electrodes, avoiding the need for expensive equipment, and the deposition and interconnection technologies can be used with industrial Sheet-to-Sheet and Roll-to-Roll manufacturing. This will allow high volume production of flexible and light-weight PV modules in the future.

“With our newly developed, industry compatible, large area coating and crystallisation processes, we were able to scale-up the active area of our solar cell devices with 3 orders of magnitude without any performance loss,” said Francesco Di Giacomo, senior scientist at Solliance Solar Research. “At the same time, we are in the process of introducing a much more stable material stack into our large area deposition processes. ”

“The challenge is to scale perovskite cells to larger size modules whilst keeping the efficiency high and the costs low at a high yield. The reported result, presented on an
aperture area comparable to standard commercial silicon solar cells, shows that Solliance Solar Research, with its in depth know-how on processing of organic PV, CIGS and its vast pilot production infrastructure, is excellently placed to realize this upscaling. This 13.8% efficient perovskite based PV module is another important step in this development. Apart from the fact that we are confident to boost quickly the up-scaled Perovskite based PV module efficiency further above 15% we are also currently making good progress to stabilize the performance of these devices under real life operational conditions,” said Ronn Andriessen, Director at Solliance Solar Research.

Cheap perovskite boosts commercial solar cell energy conversion by 20%

brian wang | August 31, 2018

UCLA created a double layer solar cell by spraying a thin layer of perovskite onto a commercially available solar cell. The solar cell that forms the bottom layer of the device is made of a compound of copper, indium, gallium and selenide, or CIGS.

The new cell converts 22.4% of the incoming energy from the sun, a record in power conversion efficiency for a perovskite–CIGS tandem solar cell. The performance was confirmed in independent tests at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The cell’s CIGS base layer, which is about 2 microns (or two-thousandths of a millimeter) thick, absorbs sunlight and generates energy at a rate of 18.7 percent efficiency on its own, but adding the 1 micron-thick perovskite layer improves its efficiency — much like how adding a turbocharger to a car engine can improve its performance. The two layers are joined by a nanoscale interface that the UCLA researchers designed; the interface helps give the device higher voltage, which increases the amount of power it can export.

And the entire assembly sits on a glass substrate that’s about 2 millimeters thick.

“Our technology boosted the existing CIGS solar cell performance by nearly 20 percent from its original performance,” Yang said. “That means a 20 percent reduction in energy costs.”

He added that devices using the two-layer design could eventually approach 30 percent power conversion efficiency. That will be the research group’s next goal.

Perovskite patents double in last two years

November 05, 2018 // By Nick Flaherty

Perovskite technology for solar cells continues to grow strongly according to the latest report from Cintelliq with patents doubling in the last two years to over 3000.

The report "Perovskite Photovoltaic: A review of the patent landscape 2010 - 2018" finds more than 3000 patents were published and granted patents between 2010 and the end of September 2018. Of these patents, 52% were published and granted within the past 18 months. Much of this is driven by the development of tandem cells that have a perovskite layer on top of a traditional silicon photovoltaic cell as development moves from academic research to commercialisation.

US invests $20m to advance perovskite solar energy technologies
The funding aims to investigate how perovskite solar cells can have high performance and low production costs

Dimitris Mavrokefalidis 14 August 2020

The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced $20 million in funding to advance perovskite solar photovoltaic technologies.

Named after the mineral with that structure, perovskites are crystalline materials, which are considered to have great potential to replace silicon in solar power generation.

When used to create solar cells, they have shown potential for high performance and low production costs.

In recent years the unique physical properties of perovskite materials, such as high-absorption have gained a huge interest in these materials for photovoltaic applications

A few months ago, researchers in Germany sent perovskite and solar cells on a rocket into space. The solar cells withstood the extreme conditions in space, producing power from direct sunlight and because they are light in weight offered a viable solution compared to inorganic silicon solar panels which are too heavy.

The aim of US funding is to test perovskite’s long-term durability in order to be competitive in the marketplace.

US Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette said: “We will continue to invest in early-stage research and development to improve the affordability, reliability and value of solar technologies on the grid and position the US as the world’s leading manufacturer of clean energy technologies.”

High supplies of perovskite can be found in Arkansas.

On verra bien.
