Japan’s Largest Solar Power Project Funded With Market-Leading Investment by GE

October 1, 2014

Kuni Umi Asset Management, GE (NYSE: GE) unit GE Energy Financial Services and Toyo Engineering Corporation have invested in Japan’s largest solar power project, a 231-megawatt facility to be built in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, via special purpose company and representative member Setouchi Future Creations.

GE Energy Financial Services holds a 60 percent stake in the project, one of the largest single equity investments in renewable energy in Japan. Financial details were not disclosed.

To support the approximately $1.1 billion project, the three owners have raised more debt than any prior renewable energy project in the country. An $867 million loan — led by Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Mizuho Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation — was provided on a non-recourse project finance basis by a syndicate of Japanese banks, including local financial institutions.

Toyo Engineering and Shimizu Corporation will build the solar photovoltaic plant beginning in November on 260 hectares (1,210 acres) of city land on the former Kinkai salt field. The project is expected to reach commercial operations in the second quarter of 2019 and sell its power to Chugoku Electric Power Company under a 20-year power purchase agreement that uses Japan’s renewable energy feed-in-tariff regime. Chudenko Corporation will provide operations and maintenance services.

A l'année, elles produiront environ 3 300 MWh.

.....The 1.7 MW installation at Nishihira Pond is possibly the largest floating solar power plant in the world. Not for long though. Kyocera has already announced it plans to build a much larger 13.4 MW floating solar power plant on the Yamakura Dam reservoir in Chiba Prefecture, Japan
Once installed, the plant will spread over a water surface area of 180,0002 metres and deliver an estimated output of 15,635 MWh/year. The electricity generated at the solar plant will be sold to Tokyo Electric Power for an estimated ¥450 million/year ($3.78 million/year).

Kyocera says it has plans to start operation of 30 floating solar power plants across Japan during FY 2015–16.

Construction on world’s largest floating photovoltaic solar power plant completed in Japan

May 24, 2015 evwind

The construction on a 2.3-megawatt floating solar power plant has been completed on Sunday in Hyogo prefecture, western Japan, which is the world’s largest floating solar power plant in terms of output.

Image

The plant, coinvested by electronics giant Kyocera Corporation and Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation, is expected to generate 2, 680 megawatt hours (MWh) every year.

According to Kyocera, floating solar plants are superior to their land-based equivalents because of the cooling effects of the water, which allow the plants to have better power generating efficiency.

“As solar power is booming in Japan, land available for large solar plants is hard to come by, and solar power generation on water surfaces attracts more and more attention,” said Ichiro Ikeda, general manager of Kyocera’s solar energy marketing division.

“Besides higher efficiency, photovoltaic panels floating on the water could produce shades and reduce water evaporation and restrain algae growth, which is good for reservoirs,” he added.

Japan installed more than 7 GW of solar PV capacity in the last fiscal year, a near tenfold increase on 2012, according to figures compiled by the Agency for Natural Resouces and Energy (ANRE) and published this week by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, 1.66 GW of PV capacity was installed in Japan. However, in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, that figure rose to 7.04 GW – an impressive increase in the space of just 12 months.

PV module shipments to Japan hit 9.21 GW in FY 2014/15

May 26, 2015

Total solar module shipments to the Japanese market in fiscal 2014/15 have increased by 7.8% year-on-year to the record-high 9.21 GW, according to data by the Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA).

Only 37% of the solar equipment supplied by Japanese firms was locally manufactured. This compares to a 41.2% share the previous fiscal year.

In fiscal 2014/15, residential module shipments in Japan declined to 1.97 GW, as a result of the higher consumption tax which reduced the number of new projects. Meanwhile, shipments to non-residential projects amounted to 7.24 GW. In particular, the 500-kW-plus segment accounted for 3.78 GW, JPEA's annual report shows

The Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA) has issued a strategy document outlining how the country could reach 100GW of installed PV generation capacity by 2030.

“PV Outlook 2030 – aiming for a sure path to a Smart Country” is an addendum to PV Outlook 2030, which has been published by JPEA at irregular intervals since 2010, with the last iteration issued in 2013.

In the document, the association explains that after the introduction of the FiT in 2012 spurred on the rapid increase of renewable energy, followed by a number of significant barriers and challenges at technical, regulatory and political level, it has become a matter of priority to carefully manage the Japanese PV industry’s progress towards 2030.

Somewhere between a forecast and a roadmap, the document has been issued numerous times since first being issued under a different name in 2002. JPEA said it has added to the previous version of the 2030 document to incorporate some lessons from the past year or so. The organisation also wrote that with 2030 now only 15 years away it was considered necessary to publish the new outline to support Japan’s industry as it transitions away from these recent high profile shocks to a more stable future.

JPEA says that by 2020, Japan could target 65.7GW of solar capacity, raising the bar from predictions made in 2013 for 49.4GW by that date. By reaching 100GW by 2030, the country would be meeting around 11.2% of its overall power generation demand with PV.

JPEA also recommends that measure be taken to raise the value of the domestic solar industry from being worth around 1% of GDP at present to double that figure by 2030.
