China 100MW molten salt solar plant hits maximum power

21 June 2019

China’s first 100MW molten salt solar thermal power plant has successfully hit its maximum power levels.

Built by Beijing Shouhang IHW Resources Saving Technology, the three billion yuan (£345m) project in Dunhuang uses 12,000 mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto a receiver, which is then used to heat the molten salt.

It is capable of generating 390 million kWh of clean power each year, enough to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 350,000 metric tonnes – engineers at the facility say it has already reached or exceeded its designed values.

Unlike the intermittency associated with traditional solar energy systems, the molten salt allows energy to be stored and later used to generate power on demand.

Huang Wenbo, Vice-Chairman of the company, said the power plant, which is among China’s first batch of solar thermal power generation demonstration projects, has proven its ability to operate in “the harshest environmental conditions” across all different seasons.

Researchers suggest a new design of rechargeable battery created using salt could boost efficiency and reduce costs.

https://france3-regions.francetvinfo.fr ... 88718.html

Israel marks start of work at thermal solar ‘sea of mirrors’ plant in Negev
The 121MW Negev Energy gleaming plant produces heat from the desert sun to create electricity; pity the price is as much as six times that of photovoltaic technology

Israel officially marked the starting of operations of the nation’s largest renewable energy project — a 121MW thermal solar gleaming power plant in the Negev desert, seen as a key part of the country’s national target of generating 10 percent of its power from renewable energy sources by 2020.

The inauguration of the Negev Energy plant at Ashalim was held in the presence of Israel’s Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz and US-Israeli businessman Naty Saidoff, who last year took control of Shikun & Binui, a construction firm that is one of the main players behind the mega project.

The plant started production in April and is operating at 95% of its full capacity. It will supply 0.75% of the nation’s electricity, to some 70,000 households. The plant will also help reduce some 245,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, the equivalent of taking 50,000 vehicles off the road, the website of the project says.

Israel will likely reach the 10% target set for 2020, he said, and has already set a new target of 17% of electricity generated by renewable energy by 2030, while also mulling increasing that target even further.

In the past, Steinitz said, the main purpose in Israel was to attain energy security. Now public health has also become a priority and Israel is set on shutting down all of its coal plants and relying just on clean energy sources, such as natural gas and renewable energy. Ninety-five percent of the renewable energy in Israel comes from solar power, he said.

“We are in the middle of a huge historic process,” Steinitz added. If once 65% of electricity was produced by coal, today coal accounts for less than 30% of the electricity supply, with the rest replaced by natural gas and solar energy.

..... Spanning approximately 390 hectares, larger than the central city of Givatayim, the 121-megawatt concentrating solar power facility will supply electricity to approximately 70,000 households in Israel, or approximately 0.75% of all electricity generated in Israel.
The $1.13 billion CSP plant – a public-private partnership (PPP) – was constructed by Negev Energy, a special purpose company held by Shikun & Binui Renewable Energy, Israeli investment fund Noy Fund and Spanish engineering group TSK. The Noy Fund and TSK joined the project in April 2016 after Spanish company Abengoa, a former project partner, went bankrupt......

Israel’s Megalim Concentrated Solar Power Plant Begins Operations

By Sneha Verma/ Updated On Thu, Apr 11th, 2019

The Megalim solar thermal power plant, a joint venture of BrightSource, GE Renewable Energy and the Noy Fund, said on 10 April, that it has begun commercial operation in Israel.

Image

The Ashalim Solar Thermal Power Station, located in Israel’s Negev desert, is one of the largest projects of its type in the world. It is also the first solar thermal or concentrated solar power (CSP) plant to be undertaken in Israel by the partner companies- BrightSource, GE Renewable Energy and the Noy Fund. The $840 million concentrated solar power project was announced in 2008 and construction began at the end of 2014 by GE Renewable Energy.

The Ashalim power station’s concentrated solar power (CSP) technology is using more than 55,000 computer-controlled heliostats or mirrors spread over a 3.15 km2 area to track the sun in two axes. The sunlight will be reflected to a special type of boiler, a Solar Receiver Steam Generator (SRSG), which is located at the top of a 240-meter tower. When the concentrated sunlight strikes the SRSG, it heats water in the boiler to create superheated steam that is then fed to a steam turbine for power generation. Compared to solar photovoltaic (PV) applications, direct steam CSP has the advantage of being able to produce electricity for longer periods of time during the solar hours. For fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it will be interesting to know that the tall tower has been likened to Sauron’s dark tower from the series, thanks to its all seeing ‘eye’ made up of thousands of mirrors. Visible from miles around.

The Ashalim plant will help increase Israel’s energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports. At the same time, it will avoid 110,000 tons per year of CO2 emissions, helping the government achieve its goal of generating 10 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. The Megalim thermo-solar station will provide power to about 50,000 households at peak. It is one of three facilities in Ashalim that are expected to produce about 2 percent of Israel’s electricity capacity. The solar-thermal power plant in Ashalim (Plot B) with a rating of 121 MW and expected to supply 320 GWh of electricity annually into Israel’s grid.

Interestingly, most of the world’s CSP plants are coming up in emerging economies. A majority use molten salt storage as the medium to store power for supply on demand, or for extended hours beyond sunshine hours.

Du solaire thermique pour décarboner Lactalis

Aurélie Barbaux 03 mars 2024

Image
