Uranium Week: Squeeze Is On

Apr 22 2020 By Greg Peel

The uranium spot price continues to soar on ongoing supply curtailment.

Last month Cameco shut down its Cigar Lake mine – the world’s largest operating uranium mine – for a month, as directed by the Canadian Federal and Saskatchewan state governments for the sake of worker safety. Last week Cameco announced the shutdown would be extended – indefinitely.

The twist in the tale is Cameco has stood as a major buyer in the uranium spot market for some time now after first shuttering some operations when spot prices fell below the cost of production, and more recently shutting up shop on virus fears. The less Cameco produces, the more it has to buy in the market to satisfy existing delivery contracts, and the more it buys, the higher the spot uranium price rises.

This fact is not lost on sellers of uranium, which currently are mostly traders given little uranium is being produced. Traders also dominate the buy-side as they attempt to exploit obligatory demand from producers such as Cameco, and this equation has resulted in a 35% jump in the uranium spot price in less than a month.

Utilities? There’s a smattering of demand from end-users, but realistically there is no sign of urgency in needing to secure product before prices run up any higher.

This week saw speculators caught out in the WTI crude oil futures market. Speculators are dominating the uranium market while producers can do nothing about it, such as restart production, while virus lockdowns persist.

Last week saw significant volume in the spot market, with 22 transactions concluded totalling 2.6mlbs U3O8 equivalent, industry consultant TradeTech reports. TradeTech’s weekly spot price indicator rose US$2.75 to US$32.25/lb, up an average 8% per week over the last month and 25% year on year.

Unlike the oil market, the uranium market has not suffered demand destruction. On the contrary, nuclear power is flowing freely as an essential service at this time, with nuclear plants taking precautions but already quite familiar with the concept of worker safety. Yet utility demand has not jumped.

There were a couple of small transactions completed in the mid-term market last week, TradeTech reports, for just beyond the spot delivery window. TradeTech’s term price indicators remain at US$31.00/lb (mid) and US$34.00/lb (long).

How long can this speculator-driven spot price rally last? Ask the virus.

When Will Uranium Prices Go Up?

Melissa Pistilli - November 17th, 2020

Uranium is an important fuel source for the nuclear energy industry. But prices have bottomed out in the past decade, with many investors wondering when the market will rebound.

.......

Uranium price chart via Trading Economics.

Only about 10 to 15 percent of uranium trades happen on the spot market. The vast majority of uranium is sold through large long-term contracts between producers and utilities. UxC estimates that cumulative nuclear fuel requirements not covered by current contracts are about 1.5 billion pounds to the end of 2035.

........
Raymond James forecasts that spot prices will average US$42.50 in 2021 and US$45 in 2022. The analyst firm anticipates that this growth will happen “as producers as well as utilities enter the market to purchase pounds as uncovered demand post-2021 grows

Stars are aligning for uranium price rally

Frik Els | March 31, 2021

The uranium market is emerging from years in the doldrums as the overhang from the nuclear disaster in Japan is cleared and global demand picks up steam.

The spot price for U3O8 moved above $30 per pound for the first time this year as uranium producers and mine developers hoover up above-ground inventories and reactor construction continues apace.

Two new research notes from BMO Capital Markets and Morgan Stanley say today’s price marks a floor and predict a rally in prices over the next few years to the ~$50 level by 2024.

The stars seem to be aligning for a new phase of nuclear energy investment with the US, China and Europe bolstering the bull case for the fuel this month.

Although nuclear energy was not mentioned explicitly in the $2 trillion Biden infrastructure proposal released today, its federally mandated “energy efficiency and clean electricity standard” is hardly achievable without it.

Image

Over the weekend leaked documents showed a panel of experts advising the EU is set to designate nuclear as a sustainable source of electricity which opens the door for new investment under the continent’s ambitious green energy program.

China’s 14th five-year plan released a fortnight ago also buoyed the uranium market with Beijing planning to up the country’s nuclear energy capacity by 46% – from 48GW in 2020 to 70GW by 2025.

Uranium price surges to highest since Fukushima on Russian war

Bloomberg News | March 11, 2022

Uranium spot prices soared to the highest level since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster on concern potential sanctions aimed at Russia are poised to roil an already tight market.

The price for benchmark uranium jumped to $59.75 per pound on Thursday, according to data compiled by UxC LLC. That’s the highest since March 2011, when meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi facility shut Japan’s fleet of nuclear plants, sent a shock-wave across the atomic industry and dashed demand for uranium — the fuel used in reactors

The White House is considering sanctions on Russia’s state-owned atomic energy company, Rosatom Corp., intensifying concerns over disruptions to uranium exports from Russia. Rosatom is a delicate target because the company and its subsidiaries account for more than 35% of global uranium enrichment. Russia accounted for 16.5% of the uranium imported into the US in 2020.

Image

“The fear of Russian nuclear fuel supplies being cut off in the West (especially the US and European Union) has led buyers to enter the spot uranium market over the past two weeks,” said Jonathan Hinze, president of UxC. “As the prospects for future limits on Russian enriched uranium imports in the West remain high, it appears that this upward pressure on spot uranium prices is unlikely to let up.”

The Sprott Physical Uranium Trust, a fund that has been aggressively cornering the physical market for the metal, has been actively snatching supply since last month, adding to the bullish sentiment. The fund has boosted its holdings of uranium by more than 10% in the last month.

Uranium is the latest raw material to be swept up in the global commodities price rally after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. International backlash and Russia’s sudden economic isolation is choking off a major global source of energy, metals and crops.

To be sure, it’s unlikely that an actual shortage of uranium will develop that forces nuclear power plants to curb output, even if Russian supplies are taken off the table. Cameco Corp., one of the world’s largest suppliers of uranium, could boost output if prices improve enough to warrant additional production over the long-term, according to a spokesperson.

There is “significant potential to increase uranium production outside of Russia,” said Jonathan Cobb, a senior communication manager at the World Nuclear Association. “Nuclear plants typically have enough fabricated fuel on site to keep operating for at least a year, and in many cases much longer.”
