Russia ships record high LNG volumes to Europe in February

in Freight News 01/03/2019

Russia delivered a record amount of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe in February, becoming the biggest supplier of the chilled fuel to the continent for the first time.

A total of 19 cargoes, or 1.41 million tonnes, of LNG from the Yamal LNG plant in Russia’s Arctic reached regasification terminals in Europe in February, with the majority of those going to northwest Europe, Refinitiv Eikon data shows.

This is the largest monthly amount of LNG from Yamal to arrive in Europe since the plant was launched in Dec. 2017 and also the first time Russia has become the biggest LNG supplier to Europe, surpassing traditional suppliers, such as Qatar, Nigeria and Algeria, as well as a newcomer, the United States.

The jump in Russia’s deliveries to Europe shows how lower-than-expected LNG demand and lower prices in Asia have made Europe a top destination for LNG produced in the Atlantic basin this winter, a drastic change from the previous winter.

Poutine inaugure le lancement du projet de développement du champ gazier et condensats de Kharasaveyskoye sur la presqu'île de Yamal.
Réserve gigantesque de 3000 milliards de m3 !
Putin launches Kharasaveyskoye gas and condensate field

20 March 2019

President Vladimir Putin has launched via videoconference the full-scale development of the Kharasaveyskoye gas and condensate field, reads a statement on kremlin.ru.

The Kharasaveyskoye field is located on the Yamal Peninsula north of the Bovanenkovskoye field, predominantly onshore and partly in the Kara Sea.

"The field is classified as unique thanks to its enormous gas reserves, which amount to 2 trillion cubic meters. Production is scheduled to begin at the field in 2023 at a design capacity of 32 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Since 20 percent of the field is located offshore, horizontal wells will be drilled from onshore to produce gas from the offshore part of the deposit," the statement notes.

The project provides for the construction of a comprehensive gas treatment unit, a booster compressor station, clusters of producing gas wells, as well as transport and energy infrastructure.

Construction Starts on Gazprom's Kharasaveyskoye Gas Field

Image

BY MAREX 2019-03-21

Russian President Vladimir Putin has overseen the official start of the full-scale development of Gazprom's Kharasaveyskoye gas field on the Yamal Peninsula.

The field is located north of the Bovanenkovskoye field and is located partly on land and partly in the waters of the Kara Sea. It has an estimated two trillion cubic meters of gas reserves, and production is scheduled for 2023, with an output of 32 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Image

About 20 percent of the reserves are offshore and will be accessed from horizontal wells from the shore. The project envisages the construction of an integrated gas treatment unit, a booster compressor station and associated transport and energy infrastructure. In order to transport the gas produced at the field, a 106-kilometer gas pipeline connecting the Kharasaveyskoye and Bovanenkovskoye fields will be built.

Putin said the project is another important step in the integrated development of the Yamal Peninsula - in the development of a modern, powerful center for gas production and processing.

“The Kharasaveyskoye field will open up new horizons for the development of the industry, for strengthening our export potential and for further gasification of Russia itself, in general for the growth of the national economy.”

Together the Kharasaveyskoye and nearby Bovanenkovskoye field contain almost seven trillion cubic meters of gas, enough to keep extracting gas until 2131.

By 2030, 310–360 billion cubic meters of gas will be produced in Yamal for domestic consumption and for export through the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines.

The total gas reserves of the Yamal Peninsula are over 16 trillion cubic meters. “These are simply planetary reserves,” said Putin.

In 2014, the Russian Government enacted tax incentives to stimulate development of the Arctic region.

Un projet de ouf :
Arctic gas finds new way from Yamal to China
Russia’s natural gas company Gazprom says it intends to build pipelines from Yamal to Far Eastern Russian regions and China.

April 01, 2020

Gazprom leader Aleksey Miller in last Friday’s meeting with President Vladimir Putin confirmed that the building of new east-bound natural gas infrastructure now is high on the company’s agenda.

The plans come as Gazprom’s current key markets in Europe gradually turn away from traditional hydrocarbons and towards alternative energy sources.

Partnership with China
Exports of natural gas from Yamal to China was issue of discussion also in a meeting between Putin and Miller in September 2019. Then, Putin made no doubt that he wanted to see deliveries of natural gas from the Yamal Peninsula to the Asian country. A new delivery route can be made through Mongolia, the President argued.

«Please have a look at the resources in Yamal, so that the necessary volumes can be delivered on a western route to China via Mongolia,» Putin requested. «I know that the route is complicated, but preliminary assessments of the issue have shown that it is fully realistic, and our Chinese partners also tend to think so,» he added.

50 billion cubic meters

Now, Aleksey Miller and his Gazprom comes to the Kremlin with the positive response that the President wants.

According to the company leader, up to 50 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas can annually be delivered to the western parts of China through the Power of Siberia 2, a more than 6,000 km long pipeline that is projected to run through Mongolia.

Preparing for investments
Gazprom is now ready to enter a project pre-investment phase, Miller told the President.

«I would like to ask you to issue an instruction to start the pre-investment phase, in order to commence the development of a feasibility study and the design-and-survey works for the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline,» Miller said.

«Yes, of course. Agreed,» Putin responded.

Yamal reservers

It is first of all the vast reserves of the Yamal region that will serve as source of the east-bound exports. Several more fields are under development in the remote Arctic area, among them the Kharasaveyskoye field that is due to start production in 2023.

From before, Yamal is Russia’s by far most important region for natural gas production. In 2012, Gazprom launched its Bovanenkovo fields that today produces up to 115 billion cubic meters per year.

However, the Bovanenkovo, like most of the country’s other oil and gas fields are built for exports to Europe and western markets.

East-west connection

The building of the Power of Siberia 2 will connect the current west-bound pipeline grid with a new east-bound grid and consequently open a new route for Russian energy exports.

According to Miller, the natural gas will also be applied to meet energy needs in east Russian regions.

And the whole thing will be profitable, the powerful natural gas leader underlines.

“A preliminary feasibility analysis has been carried out; it has shown that the project is feasible and cost-effective.”

Gazprom in 2019 produced a total of 500,1 billion cubic meters of natural gas, of which 199,3 billion was exported. The company in the period provided 35,6 percent of European natural gas consumption.

Gazprom begins drilling first production well at Kharasaveyskoye field in Yamal

Drilling of the first producing well at Kharasaveyskoye field on Russia's Yamal Peninsula began June 12, Gazprom said in a release. Production is expected to begin in 2023.

OGJ editors Jun 16th, 2020

Drilling of the first producing well at Kharasaveyskoye field on Russia's Yamal Peninsula began June 12, Gazprom said in a release. Production is expected to begin in 2023.

Well No. 4051 with a projected depth of 2,540 m is the first in gas well cluster No. 5, which will have 11 wells in total. This year, 16 wells are expected to be completely drilled.

On March 20, 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched full-scale development of Kharasaveyskoye field, which lies mostly onshore, but partly spreads into the Kara Sea (OGJ Online, Mar. 21, 2019). Gas reserves at the field are estimated at 2 trillion cu m.

The estimated volume of gas production from the Cenomanian-Aptian deposits—the first development target—is 32 billion cu m/year. Construction of gas production wells, a comprehensive gas treatment unit, a booster compressor station, and transport and power infrastructure are planned. Horizontal wells for the offshore segment of the field are expected to be drilled from onshore. To transmit gas, a connecting gas pipeline stretching 106 km to Bovanenkovskoye field will be built. The gas will then be fed into Russia’s Unified Gas Supply System.

Work Started on Gazprom Ice Resistant Platform
The construction of an ice resistant platform for Gazprom's Kamennomysskoye-Sea field on the Arctic shelf has begun.
The construction of an ice resistant platform for Gazprom’s Kamennomysskoye-Sea field on the Arctic shelf has begun, the company has revealed.

Kamennomysskoye-Sea’s platform will be more than 440 feet long, 226 feet wide, 134 feet tall and its weight will exceed 40,000 tons in total. Structures placed on the platform will include main and auxiliary drilling modules, operational and energy complexes and living quarters for 120 people, Gazprom noted.

The field is situated in an environment characterized by temperatures of up to -60 degrees Celsius, heavy storms, shallow depths and thick and dense freshwater ice, according to Gazprom. The full scope of modeling and design for the ice resistant platform (ICP) was performed by Russia's leading shipbuilding research institutions, Gazprom outlined.

“The construction process will involve a number of cutting-edge technical solutions to ensure a high level of industrial and environmental safety, as well as operational integrity of the facility,” Gazprom said in a statement posted on its website.

“For instance, to protect the ICP from thick ice, the support structure will be V-shaped and nearly all of the facility's equipment will be encased in the hull and thus protected from cold and wind,” Gazprom added.

“Particular attention in the project is paid to solutions aiming to prevent adverse impacts on the Arctic flora and fauna. This includes a zero-discharge system. All household and production waste will be removed from the platform and disposed of later,” Gazprom continued.

Gazprom expects to tow the ICP to the Kamennomysskoye-Sea field in the summer navigation period of 2024. After this, flare booms and a helicopter pad will be set up at the facility. Construction operations will involve about 7,000 Russian workers and specialists, according to Gazprom.

NOVATEK pourrait stocker du CO2 aux sites gaziers de Yamal et Gydan.
NOVATEK Obtains International Certification for CO2 Underground Storage Sites in Yamal and Gydan

édité le 03/02/2022

PAO NOVATEK (NOVATEK) announced that the first of three stages of international certification for long-term CO2 underground storage sites in the Yamal and Gydan Peninsulas has been successfully completed and that site feasibility certificates have been issued for further study of the sites and subsequent certification stages. Det Norske Veritas (DNV), an independent certification and classification society, issued certificates of conformity with international standards ISO 27914:2017 Carbon Dioxide Geological Storage and DNVGL-SE-0473 Certification of Sites and Projects for Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide.

Pursuant to the issued certificates, the geological formations within the Obskiy (Yamal) and Tadebyayakhinskiy (Gydan) license areas have the capacity to store at least 600 million tons of CO2 each, which is supported by calculations. The calculations were made by NOVATEK's Scientific and Technical Center with the involvement of international service companies, and verified by DNV.

“Having certified CO2 geological storage sites is an important element of the Company's strategy to decarbonize production clusters for LNG and low-carbon gas chemicals”, noted Leonid Mikhelson, Chairman of NOVATEK’s Management Board. “The large potential of the certified CO2 storage sites allows both capturing and storing CO2 generated at our own production facilities, and offering CO2 underground storage services to third parties. NOVATEK is currently finalizing the pre-FEED stage for CO2 capture and treatment infrastructure in Yamal, with subsequent CO2 injection in the subsurface for long-term storage. The project will allow reducing the carbon footprint of the Company's existing and prospective projects, including LNG plants and gas chemical production facilities”.
