Chevron Greenlights Gorgon LNG Expansion

By Irina Slav - Apr 16, 2018,

Chevron has said it will drill 11 new wells in the Gorgon and Jansz-Io fields offshore Australia as part of its expansion plan for the Gorgon LNG megaproject. Drilling will begin next year. The expansion will also include the construction of more pipelines and subsea infrastructure to send the gas pumped at the Gorgon project to the liquefaction plant on nearby Barrow Island, Reuters reports.

Chevron did not mention how much the expansion will cost, but according to a spokesman for the company, the investment won’t require any additional allocations to its approved annual investment plans for 2018-2020, which stand at US$18-20 billion.

The Gorgon project shipped its first gas cargo two years ago, and its productive life is estimated at 40 years. Chevron is the operator, with a little over 47 percent, and its biggest partners are Exxon and Shell, each with a 25-percent stake. The remainder is held by three Japanese companies, including JERA, Tokyo Gas, and Osaka Gas.

The current annual capacity of the three-train liquefaction facility on Barrow Island is 15.6 million tons of LNG. To put this in perspective, Shell recently estimated global LNG demand last year hit 293 million tons and will continue to grow quickly, potentially leading to a shortage in the middle of the next decade.

Related: How Significant Is WTI’s Breakout?

Gorgon’s start was not an easy one. The project stumbled on several production delays and substantial cost overruns that reached almost US$20 billion. It is Chevron’s biggest LNG project in Australia, but it is not the only one. The second and smaller one, Wheatstone, began producing gas last year, with an annual liquefaction capacity of around half that of Gorgon.

This year should see the launch of two more offshore LNG projects in Australia as the country stakes its claim as the world’s second-largest LNG exporter: Shell’s Prelude, which is one of the very few floating LNG projects, and Inpex-operated Inchtys. Two other LNG projects were shelved amid the oil and gas price drop, one by Shell, and another by Woodside Petroleum in partnership with BP and Shell.

Historic moment for Inpex as first condensate shipment leaves Ichthys LNG project in Browse Basin

Image

Japanese oil and gas giant Inpex has reached a major milestone with the departure of its first shipment of condensate from its Ichthys LNG project in Western Australia's Browse Basin.

The cargo — a light crude oil that will be refined and turned into fuels — is destined for markets in Asia and signifies the start of the multi-billion-dollar project generating revenue.

"It's a really terrific day for us to celebrate this milestone," Inpex general manager of external affairs Bill Townsend said.

"I think it's especially satisfying for us given it's been 20 years since we were awarded the exploration permit in 1998, and it's been some 18 years since we drilled the exploration well that led to the discovery of the Ichthys field.

"It's been six-and-a-half years since our final investment decision, which means six-and-a-half years of construction to get us to this point.

"We've spent more than $50 billion and we're finally in a position now to be generating revenue."

Speaking to ABC Rural, Mr Townsend said at its peak, the Ichthys project would produce 100,000 barrels of condensate per day.

"Condensate is a very important product for us and certainly contributes to the economics of the project and makes it a more sustainable project in terms of economics," he said.

"The Ichthys Field itself represents the largest liquid hydrocarbon discovery since Bass Strait in the 1960s, so a very significant condensate discovery and one of the largest ever discovered in Australia."

First gas on its way soon

The main game for Inpex's project in the Browse Basin is liquefied natural gas (LNG).

At its peak, the project will produce up to 8.9 million tonnes of LNG per year and up to 1.65 million tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per year.

The company has built the longest subsea pipeline in the southern hemisphere to transport gas from the Browse Basin nearly 900 kilometres to Darwin for processing.

The first shipments of LNG and LPG are expected to start from Darwin later this year.

$40 Billion Ichthys LNG Project Begins Gas Exports

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Oct 24, 2018

France’s oil and gas major Total said on Tuesday that the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Ichthys LNG project offshore Western Australia had left the port of Darwin for the first export of the US$40-billion project that began producing gas in July this year.

The planned production volumes at Ichthys will be 8.9 million tons of LNG annually, 1.65 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) a year, and around 100,000 bpd of condensate at peak production and full capacity, according to the French energy supermajor.

Total is a partner in the Ichthys LNG venture with a 30-percent stake, while the operator is Japan’s largest exploration and production company, Inpex.

Inpex also confirmed on Tuesday that the first LNG cargo departed from Australia en route to INPEX-operated Naoetsu LNG terminal in Niigata Prefecture in Japan.

Some 70 percent of LNG from the Ichthys project will be bound for Japan—the largest LNG importer in the world.

Production at the Ichthys LNG began in July this year, when Inpex expected first shipment of products from the project toward the end of the first half of its current fiscal year—April to September.

At the beginning of October, the first condensate cargo departed from the Ichthys LNG project for the Asian market, while the project is also scheduled to start the shipment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) later this year, Inpex said today.

The start of LNG exports from Ichthys marks the commercial operation of the most recent LNG project off Australia’s coasts over the past decade. LNG projects that began operations in Australia in recent years include Chevron-operated Gorgon and Wheatstone.

The last of the major projects is Shell’s Prelude, a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility in Browse Basin off the northwest coast of Western Australia. Shell’s CEO Ben van Beurden said on an earnings conference call in July that based on Shell’s current commissioning schedule, “we are on track to start production this year.”

PTTEP Makes Gas Discovery Offshore Australia

by Andreas Exarheas|Rigzone Staff|Friday, March 08, 2019

PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) has made a new gas discovery offshore Australia.

The find was made through the Orchid-1 exploration well, which is located in the Timor Sea. Starting in January this year, the drilling of Orchid-1 was undertaken to a total depth of 9,596 feet. The well encountered gas and condensate, with the net pay thickness around 111 feet.

“The result is in line with PTTEP’s expectation and will be incorporated into development planning of Cash-Maple field, which contains 3.5 trillion cubic feet of resources,” PTTEP said in a company statement posted on its website on Friday.

Headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand, PTTEP is a national petroleum exploration and production company that conducts projects all over the world. On January 30, the company reported a net profit jump of 89 percent in 2018, compared to 2017.

Lire ici https://www.rigzone.com/news/wire/outba ... 1-article/
Origin Energy Ltd. plans to drill two wells later this year in the Northern Territory’s Beetaloo Basin, after the local government ended a three-year ban on fracking -- the practice of extracting oil and gas from layers of shale rock deep underground. With an estimated 500 trillion cubic feet of gas, Beetaloo has been compared to famed U.S. shale regions such as Marcellus and Barnett.

But its isolated location, lack of infrastructure, and the likelihood of tough environmental opposition, make Beetaloo a highly speculative investment.

“There are some big numbers being quoted and people have to realize this is exploration,” said Mark Schubert, Origin’s head of integrated gas, noting that only some of the total reserves would be extractable.

Western Gas aiming for 2024 for start of Equus gas production
Western Gas Corp. reported that its Equus gas project offshore Western Australia is on track for coming on stream in 2024. The estimate follows completion of an “upstream-to-LNG development plan” and the commencement of project financing and partnering.

Western Gas Corp. Pty. Ltd. (WGC), Perth, reported that its Equus gas project offshore Western Australia is on track for coming on stream in 2024. The estimate follows completion of an “upstream-to-LNG development plan” and the commencement of project financing and partnering.

WGC Executive Director Andrew Leibovitch said the engineering and design process undertaken by development partners McDermott and Baker Hughes had delivered a globally competitive, midscale LNG development plan for the Equus fields.

The development will eventually tap 10 discoveries spread across exploration permit WA-474-P and retention licence WA-70-R located between Woodside’s Scarborough gas field and ExxonMobil Corp.’s Io-Jansz field on the outer North West Shelf.

The first phase comprises three production wells connecting the Nimblefoot and Mentorc fields via a subsea network to a floating production, storage, and offloading vessel, a 160-km dry gas export pipeline to a nearshore, a 2 million-tonne/year floating LNG (FLNG) plant, and an onshore pipeline connection to supply gas into the Dampier-to-Bunbury natural gas trunkline.

Processing on the FPSO will include gas dehydration, gas compression, and stripping of condensate for direct export.

Engineering and design work will now focus on development proposals for the subsea installations, the FPSO, pipeline, and FLNG work packages.
