Le procédé GTL (Gas To Liquids)

GTL = Gas To Liquids

http://www.ifp.fr/IFP/fr/evenement/pano ... ologie.pdf

question de flair! :-D

(ortho:j'ai vérifié) Voir l'article Wikipedia:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benz%C3%A8ne

oui. Je me souviens.

1) In the late 1990s and early 21 st century, GTL was the “new technological frontier “ wich would help alleviating the future shock of “Peak Oil” by neatly producing liquids from natural gas. Projections of up 3mb/d were not unusual (mainly published in the “Petroleum Economist” the most sanguine of all GTL enthusiasts).
At a gathering in summer 2003, an oil industry veteran was endeavoring to convert me to the ‘nec lus ultra’ CTL technology and vehemently stressed its incomparable advantages. When i began pointing (politely) to some blaring disavantages (I had been following GTL since 1991 and had duly visited all existing facilities worldwide[*]) he gave me a disdainful look, frowned and imply turned away. I think he had hoped to decisively further the GTL cause in Iran and must have been badly disappointed...
I never took to GTL and have paid a heavy price for daring speak out against this expensive and highly wasteful technology; Fortunately, i was able to stop (single-handely) the ‘National Iranian Oil company’ (NIOC) from getting heavily involved into a number of GTL ventures (some still ongoing) and thus, the GTL ball was lobed to the other side of the Persian Gulf... into Qatar

2] The first Qatari GTL (the ORYX GTL) with a design capacity of 34 000 b/d (two identical trains of 17 000 b/d each) should start up in the spring of 2006 (barring any mishaps during the next twelve months or so). The plant’s twin reactor have just arrived on site at Ras Laffan in Qatar. Built in Japan by ‘Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries’ [IHHI] of Yokohama,
“The cigar-shaped reactor are 60 metre high, have a diameter of 10 metres ans weigh more than 2000 tonnes each”
these record-breaking reactors are at the heart of Sasol’s slurry phase distillate [SSPD] process. They will eventually be filled with a slurry consisting of natural gas, produced liquids and particles of cobalt catalyst with the gas entering at the bottom of this enormous ‘moving bed’ and the products leaving at the top. The contents of each reactor
“could fill three olympic size swimming pools”
I simply shudder when i think something could wrong within these gigantic reactor – where would they dump the content if something does go wrong? And believe me, things can go wrong. I have estimated that at full capacity, there should be no less than 900 tonnes of catalyst particules in each reactors--- with coblat at an average of 39$/kg in April 2005, the value of the catalyst adds up to roughly $ 70m for both reactor. Moreover, i calculated that in theory, some 40 grams of cobalt catalyst should be spent for every barrel of liquid produced at 1.56$/b (in practice, catalyst consumption will be much higher---one of the main problems of GTL is that in practice things look very different from theory).
I will not be the only one to wait see how the “ORYX GTL” project fares...

3] but in mid –April 2005 ‘Qatar Petroleum’ suprised everyone by slapping a moratorium on the two pending GTL projects of ‘ConocoPhillips’ and ‘Marathon’ as well as on ‘ORYX3’---advancing that the ‘North field’ gas production “will have to be capped” (already having production problems out there?); I always held that the field’s 900 trillion cubic feet (tcf) reserves estimates were grossly exaggerated and only about half that is my best guesstimate; i also believe that south Pars’s reserves at 450 tcf should be halved too to around 220 tcf. Consequently, only four Qatar GTLs are still on course for a total design capacity of 394 000 b/d

GTL project
ORYX Compagnie:Sasol Capacity(b/d): 34 000 Capex ($ bn):1.3 start up:2006

ORYX 2 Compagnie:Sasol /Chevron Capacity(b/d): 66 000 Capex ($ bn):2.5 start up:2009

PEARL Compagnie:Shell Capacity(b/d): 140 000 Capex ($ bn):5 start up:2009

EXXon Compagnie:Exxonmobil Capacity(b/d): 154 000 Capex ($ bn):7 start up: 2011

4]however, ‘Chevron’ was not deterred by GTL critics: not only did it join ‘Sasol’ in ‘ORYX2’ (with its 3*22 000 b/d trains), but it also gave the green liht for a replica of ‘ORYX 1’ for its ‘Escravos’ gas field in nigeria( a joint venture in which it holds 75 % and Nigerian national oil company ‘NNPC’ the other 25%. In April 2005, the venture awarded an ‘EPC’ [Engineering- Procurement- construction] contract worth $ 1.7 bn [equivalent to $ 50 000 for every b/d of design capacity] to ‘Team JKS’ [ a consortium of (i) ‘JGC’ (Japan), (ii) ‘Kellogg Brown & Root’ (USA), and (iii) ‘Snamprogetti’ (Italy)]. The ‘Sasol/Cheron’ 50-50 joint venture will provide technical support to the ‘Escravos GTL’.

5] nigerian is also earmarked for the first offshore (barge-mounted) GTL ---a long time dream of ‘Syntroleum’ (of Tulsa, Oklahoma)--- which has associated with Nigeria’s ‘Yinka folawiyo’ for this offshore GTL on Nigeria’s block ‘OML 113’; The project is scheduled to kick off in Q3/2005

6] Besides Nigeria, Algeria is also toying with GTL; It national oil compagny ‘Snoatrach’ has recently issued an international tender for its ‘Tinrhert Integrated project’ (near the border with Libya) for an estimated $ 3 bn and encompassing the development of 17 minor gas fields and 7 oil fields as well as a GTL plant of 36 000b/d. The project award is froeseen for december 20 2005--- with ‘Sonatrach’ taking a 30% to 35% share therein.

7] The ‘5th world GTL summit’ will gather at London on May 17/19 (2005) hoping to lure new client to the GTL fray...
But GTL is at best a wounded technology, incapable of rivalling LNG, and with a very limited future---especially bearing in mind the constantly rising price of nautral gas worlwide...
GTL can (at best) be considered for badly stranded natural gas reserves, and even in such extreme cases I doubt it is worth the economic risk...
The bad news from Qatar is not omen for London(s ‘GTL summint’. Moreover, the limiting of the Qatari GTL programme to only 394 000 b/d (after having wishfully trumpeted “over 1 mb/d by 2010) will encourage potential GTL amateurs to “THINK twice”
