Petrobras Hits Quarterly and Monthly Production Records

Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) has hit new highs in quarterly and monthly operated oil and gas production volumes.

The company said in a media release that its operated oil and gas production reached 3.98 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) in the third quarter, 7.8 percent above the second quarter.

Additionally, the company has also reached a monthly record of operated production in September with a volume of 4.1 MMboe, 6.8 percent above the August volume.

The results are mainly due to the production increase at the Almirante Barroso platform, which operates in the Buzios field, and the P-71 platform, in the Itapu field—both in the Santos Basin pre-salt—and the Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi units, in the Marlim and Voador fields, which operate in the Campos Basin, the company said. In September, Petrobras reached the mark of 3.43 MMboe in the pre-salt layer, according to the company.

Another relevant factor was the lower number of maintenance stops at the platforms during this period, the company said.

Petrobras secures 29 blocks in Brazil’s offshore auction

In the 4th Cycle of the Permanent Offer, the company won 29 blocks in the coastal area of Rio Grande do Sul

Petrobras emerged as the major victor in the 4th Cycle of the Permanent Offer, securing 29 blocks within the Pelotas Basin under the concession regime. This triumph transpired during an auction convened by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP). Prioritising offshore assets, Petrobras engaged in consortium partnerships with other companies.

In the blocks acquired, Petrobras will assume the role of operator, overseeing three in collaboration with Shell (30%) and CNOOC (20%), and the remaining 26 in partnership solely with Shell (30%). These newly acquired blocks are situated in the coastal region of Rio Grande do Sul.

The company is obligated to pay a signing bonus totalling BRL116m ($23.58m). Notably, this sum accounts for less than 1% of the investments sanctioned in the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan and was preordained within the framework of the plan itself.

Petrobras adopted a discerning approach during the auction, aligning with its strategy to revamp its exploration portfolio by venturing into new frontiers exhibiting geological potential.

Presently, nearly 80% of the company’s production is centred in the pre-salt, maintaining its status as a primary asset due to significant economic and environmental advantages. The pre-salt assets contribute to the production of higher-quality oil while concurrently reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond investments in the pre-salt and the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, Petrobras is committed to securing the sustainability of forthcoming oil and gas production. This involves an integrated approach with diverse energy sources, contributing to the ongoing energy transition in a just, secure, and sustainable manner. The addition of these 29 blocks complements the existing portfolio of 47 blocks.

The acquisition of these 29 exploratory blocks will result in the inclusion of over 20 thousand km2 to the current portfolio, which stands at approximately 30 thousand km2. This represents a substantial 67% increase in the exploratory area.

Petrobras CEO Jean Paul Prates said: “New frontiers, such as the blocks acquired today, are essential for energy demand to be met. For this reason, we seek to replenish reserves and develop new exploratory frontiers that ensure that we meet energy demand during the energy transition with the lowest possible carbon footprint.”

Petrobras engaged in the auction through competitive consortia, aligning with its strategy to bolster partnerships, share risks, and leverage combined technical and technological expertise. The companies recognised a promising geological potential in these areas, providing a foundation for their competitive proposals.

It’s worth noting that both Shell and CNOOC are already collaborators with Petrobras in other partnerships within the Exploration and Production (E&P) segment.

Following this auction, the next steps involve the qualification stage for the winning bidders, followed by the subsequent signing of the contracts.

Petrobras Starts Drilling in Brazil's Equatorial Margin Region

Brazil’s Petroleo Brasileiro SA began drilling on Saturday in the so-called Equatorial Margin as the state oil company looks to expand production in the promising and ecologically sensitive offshore region.

The drilling of the Pitu Oeste well, located 53 kilometers (33 miles) off the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, is expected take three to five months as Petrobras seeks more geological information about the area.

The push to explore the basins in and around the Equatorial Margin, which extends along the country’s northern coast, has already caused backlash from environmental activists and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s allies.

While Lula, as the 78-year-old leftist is known, has placed protecting the rain forest at the top of his agenda, his government also called for more resource extraction to fund its social programs.

Petrobras previously said it had received permission from Brazil’s environmental regulator Ibama to begin drilling two wells in the deep-water region.

Pétrobras, TotalEnergies et Shell vont tester le captage de CO2 sur un champ pétrolier brésilien

Un consortium mené par les géants Pétrobras, TotalEnergies et Shell va tester sur un champ pétrolier sous-marin au Brésil une nouvelle technologie consistant à séparer le pétrole du CO2 au moment de l'extraction afin de réinjecter le gaz dans le gisement.

Cette technologie a pour but de réduire "l'intensité des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, tout en augmentant la capacité de production du champ" pétrolier de Libra, a indiqué le groupe français TotalEnergies dans un communiqué publié lundi.

De nombreux producteurs d'hydrocarbures comptent sur les technologies de captage et stockage du CO2, encore balbutiantes, pour maintenir au moins une partie de leur activité tout en limitant les émissions de ce gaz, principal responsable du réchauffement climatique.

L'accord trouvé à Dubaï à l'issue de la COP28 mentionne d'ailleurs des technologies "d'élimination" pour les secteurs où la décarbonation est difficile tout en appelant à une "transition" hors des énergies fossiles.

TotalEnergies présente dans son communiqué l'unité pilote comme une "technologie pionnière" qui permet de "diminuer le volume de gaz envoyé" à la surface.

Concrètement, la séparation de l'huile, qui donne le pétrole, et du gaz naturel ainsi que du CO2 qui se trouvent dans les couches du gisement se fait au niveau du fond marin au moment de l'extraction, avant que l'huile ne soit acheminée vers la surface, tandis que le gaz est réinjecté dans le sous-sol.

"Au-delà du bénéfice immédiat pour les opérations au Brésil, (cette nouvelle technologie, ndlr) devrait trouver des applications dans d'autres projets de la Compagnie", précise Namita Shah, directrice générale de OneTech chez TotalEnergies, citée dans le texte.

Le champ pré-salifère Libra est situé dans le bassin de Santos au large du Brésil, à 2.100 mètres de profondeur, sous une épaisse couche de sel.

Aussi appelé Mero, du nom de ses unités flottantes de production et de stockage, ses réserves avaient été estimées entre 8 à 12 milliards de barils de brut par l'Agence nationale du pétrole (ANP) au Brésil.

Il est exploité par le géant brésilien Petrobras (38,6%), en partenariat avec TotalEnergies (19,3%), Shell Brésil (19,3%), la China National Petroleum Corporation (9,65 %), la China National Offshore Oil Corporation (9,65%) et PPSA (Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A., 3,5%).

C'est ce consortium qui a financé le développement de la future unité de séparation du pétrole et du gaz reliée à une unité flottante en construction sur le champ Mero 3.

Petrobras: bénéfice 2023 en baisse de 32,1%

La compagnie pétrolière brésilienne Petrobras a annoncé jeudi soir un bénéfice annuel 2023 (attribué aux actionnaires) en baisse de 32,1% à 24,8 milliards de dollars, du fait de la chute des cours du pétrole.

En 2022, le géant pétrolier avait dégagé un bénéfice net record de quelque 36 milliards de dollars.

"La variation est principalement attribuée à la dévaluation du Brent (-18%) et à des marges moindres sur les produits dérivés", a détaillé Petrobras dans un document financier, soulignant également l'impact de l'augmentation des dépenses d'exploitation.

En 2022, le baril de Brent se négociait à 101,19 dollars, contre 82,62 dollars au plus bas en 2023, indique le rapport de la compagnie.

Petrobras avait dégagé un bénéfice de 6,259 milliards de dollars au cours du dernier trimestre de l'année, en hausse par rapport aux trois mois précédents, mais en baisse de 24,1% par rapport au quatrième trimestre 2022.

L'entreprise n'a toutefois pas annoncé le versement de dividendes extraordinaires attendus par les marchés.

Selon le président de l'entreprise, Jean Paul Prates, la société maintiendra une "rationalité" dans sa stratégie commerciale et sa politique de distribution de dividendes, "renforcée pour tenir compte des investissements accrus et de la nécessité absolue de conserver" une bonne santé financière.

Les actions de Petrobras ont chuté le 28 février après que M. Prates a déclaré, dans une interview à Bloomberg, que la société serait plus "prudente" dans sa distribution de dividendes.

L'action de la compagnie pétrolière publique brésilienne Petrobras a chuté de plus de 12% à l'ouverture vendredi de la Bourse de Sao Paulo, après l'annonce d'un bénéfice annuel 2023 en nette baisse.

Le géant pétrolier a annoncé jeudi soir une baisse de son bénéfice de 32,1% à 24,8 milliards de dollars, du fait de la chute des cours du pétrole. Mais l'année 2023 a tout de même été la deuxième la plus lucrative de l'histoire de la compagnie.

En 2022, Petrobras avait dégagé un bénéfice net record de 36 milliards de dollars.

Petrobras discovers oil in ultra-deep waters of the Potiguar Basin

Petrobras has discovered an oil accumulation in the ultra-deep waters of the Potiguar Basin in the Anhangá exploratory well of the POT-M-762_R15 Concession. The 1-BRSA-1390-RNS (Anhangá) well is located near the border between the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, about 190 km from Fortaleza and 250 km from Natal, at a water depth of 2,196 meters, on the Brazilian Equatorial Margin.

This is the second discovery in the Potiguar Basin in 2024, preceded by proof of the presence of hydrocarbons in the Pitu Oeste Well, located in the BM-POT-17 Concession, around 24 km from Anhangá. These discoveries still require further assessment. Petrobras is the operator of both concessions and holds a 100% stake.

The exploratory activities in the Equatorial Margin represent another step in Petrobras' commitment to replenishing reserves and developing new exploratory frontiers to ensure that global energy demand is met during the energy transition.

Petrobras Approves Use of Decarbonization Fund for PV Plants

Petróleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) has approved the use of its Decarbonization Fund for the installation of photovoltaic (PV) plants at its refineries.

Petrobras said in a statement that including these PV plants, there are 33 projects supported by the fund. These projects have the potential to cut emissions by more than 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Photovoltaic plants will be built at the Gabriel Passos (Regap) refinery in Minas Gerais, the Abreu e Lima (Rnest) refinery in Pernambuco and the Paulínia (Replan) refinery in São Paulo, Petrobras said. The three plants will have an estimated combined capacity of 48 megawatts and are scheduled to start operating in 2025.

"The installation of photovoltaic plants integrated into the refinery generation system allows for improved integration and operational reliability, reducing gas consumption and, consequently, greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the company's strategic planning for a just energy transition", said William França da Silva, director for industrial processes and products at Petrobras.

The company aims to neutralize operational emissions by 2025 through its portfolio under the Decarbonization Fund.

"Petrobras is a major energy consumer, which is an important lever for our ambition to advance, in the coming years, in renewable generation projects of great materiality, seeking to combine profitable projects with the progressive decarbonization of our activities and our products", Petrobras energy transition and sustainability director Maurício Tolmasquim said.

The Petrobras Decarbonization Fund currently has a budget of $1 billion. This is available for 2024 to 2028.

Petrobras aims to cut its total operational emissions by 30 percent by 2030 relative to 2015 levels. The long-term goal is to neutralize operational emissions by 2050.
