Robert Friedland’s Ivanhoe Electric one of three finalists for Saudi Arabia project

Staff Writer | August 25, 2022

Saudi Arabia has narrowed the field to three finalists for a massive mining exploration licence about 175 km west of Riyadh that it says contains about 25 million tonnes of zinc and copper at grades of 4.11% zinc and 0.56% copper.

The kingdom received six proposals for the 350-km Khnaiguiyah licence and has selected three for its short list: a consortium between Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma’aden) and Ivanhoe Electric (TSX: IE; NYSE-AM: IE); a consortium between Alara Saudi Ventures Pty. Ltd. Resources and AlTasnim Enterprises LLC; and a consortium between Moxico Resources Plc and Ajlan & Bros Mining Company.

The third and final stage of the application process will kick off on Sept. 4.

As part of its plan to transform the mining sector into the third pillar of its national economy, Saudi Arabia offers incentives including co-funding of up to 75% of capex through the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF); a five-year royalty holiday for miners and a 30% reduction on royalty payments for further downstream production processing.

The government hosted its first ever Future Minerals Forum in January to showcase its mining potential and the urgency of finding more critical metals. lt passed a new minerals investment law last year and in the first ten months of 2021 the country provided 13 reconnaissance licences, 133 exploration licences and eight exploitation licences, according to government data.

Mining companies active in the country include Barrick Gold (TSX: ABX; NYSE: GOLD), which has a 50-50 joint venture copper operation with Ma’aden. The Jabal Sayid mine went into commercial production in July 2016.

Among the finalists for the Khnaiguiyah licence, Ivanhoe Electric is focused on electric metals projects. Its two flagship projects are in the United States: Santa Cruz, a copper project in Arizona, and Tintic, a copper, gold and silver project in Utah.

The company also has what it describes as advanced exploration technology including Typhoon, a geophysical survey technology based on Pulse Power, as well as data analytics and geophysical modelling and artificial intelligence for water, oil and mineral discoveries. In addition, it holds a controlling interest in VRB Energy, a developer and manufacturer of large-scale energy storage systems.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbGg-GqxVTo

Aramco Starts Construction Of Two Offshore Fabrication Facilities

by Bojan Lepic|Rigzone Staff|Tuesday, October 18, 2022

Aramco is establishing two offshore fabrication yards to double Saudi Arabia's offshore fabrication capacity.

Saudi Arabian oil company Aramco, in collaboration with international partners, is establishing two offshore fabrication yards that aim to deliver a more than 200 percent increase in the country’s offshore fabrication capacity.

The new yards are being constructed in Ras Al Khair in collaboration with National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) and McDermott International. They are expected to fabricate and assemble offshore platforms, jackets, and structures for subsea pipelines.

Designed to international standards and harnessing the latest technologies, they are intended to serve the Kingdom, GCC, and broader markets. Establishing the yards at Ras Al Khair also aims to support the localization of the maritime industry and supplement the nearby King Salman International Complex for Maritime Industries and Services.

Start-up of the facilities is planned for the third quarter of 2023, with the initial combined production capacity estimated at roughly 70,000 metric tons per year, increasing Saudi Arabia’s total offshore fabrication capacity from 30,000 MT to 100,000 MT annually. When fully operational, the yards are expected to create up to 7,000 direct and indirect jobs, with a target Saudization rate of 70 percent.

“We believe the creation of these two yards represents a significant addition to infrastructure development for the maritime industry. They are expected to harness the latest technologies, support localization efforts, improve the supply chain and contribute to the development of Saudi talent. In addition, they aim to contribute to economic diversification in the Kingdom,” Ahmad A. Al-Sa’adi, Aramco Senior Vice President of Technical Services, said.

“NPCC and McDermott are long-term partners of Aramco, and the establishment of these yards is another example of our collaborations and joint efforts to deliver more advanced offshore facilities. The yards are intended to bring cutting-edge technologies and digital solutions to in-Kingdom fabrication. We also expect them to accelerate project delivery schedules and reinforce the local supply chain,” Abdulkarim A. Al Ghamdi, Aramco Vice President of Project Management, added.

It is anticipated that the new offshore fabrication yards will support economic expansion and diversification in Saudi Arabia and tap into different opportunities to create value. They could also help localize state-of-the-art technologies while supporting Saudi Arabia’s development as a center of excellence for maritime engineering, equipment, material manufacturing, and fabrication.

The offshore fabrication yards are expected to take advantage of advanced infrastructure at Ras Al Khair, including Ras Al Khair Port and the King Salman International Complex for Maritime Industries and Services.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kvf-eLKgvMw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ0eQMVboIE

Marcus Dupont-Besna 24 oct 2022 Numerama

Alfanar has won a contract from Saudi Arabia Saline Water Conversion Corp. (SWCC) to build a 110 MW ground-mounted PV project. The installation will provide electricity to desalinate seawater through reverse osmosis at the Jubail 2 Desalination Plant, which is owned by SWCC.

The investment has been estimated at SAR 1.2 billion. The project will also include a 380 kV substation and 173 kilometers of overhead transmission lines.

“Alfanar is one of the first Saudi companies to invest in renewable energy across the Kingdom,” said the Saudi energy infrastructure specialist.

The Jubail plant is one of the largest desalination plants in the world, with a production capacity of 1 million cubic meters of water per day. PV is expected to provide electricity to the plant at a lower consumption rate of 2.16 kWh/m3.

Saudi Arabia’s cumulative installed PV capacity reached 439 MW at the end of 2021, according to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
