Offshore Suriname block needs further exploration to affirm resource potential
Apache Corp./Total’s Maka Central oil discovery offshore Suriname could generate more than $50 million in annual in revenues to the Surinamese government, according to GlobalData.

Apache Corp./Total’s Maka Central oil discovery offshore Suriname could generate more than $50 million in annual in revenues to the Surinamese government, according to GlobalData.

Oil and gas analyst Gregory Bosunga said: “Due to a lack of onshore processing and export infrastructure in the Guyana-Suriname basin, development through an FPSO will be the most optimal option.

“Maka Central reservoirs are located at the same level as the nearby Stabroek play – around 400 ft (122 m) – so it is reasonable to assume a potential of 300 MMbbl of gross recoverable oil.

“Assuming there will be similar development and operating costs to Liza Phase 1, to breakeven from the estimated total costs of $7.2 billion, Maka Central will need minimum recoverable resources of 213 MMboe at oil prices of $56/bbl.

The surrounding offshore block 58 features seven distinct play types, with more than 50 prospects identified. But comprehensive exploration of this large block will be needed, GlobalData claimed, with further drilling and testing needed to appraise the resources and productivity of the reservoirs.

Bosunga said: “It is far too early to know whether this new discovery by Apache and Total might eventually bring a similar positive financial impact for Suriname as the Stabroek block is expected to do for Guyana.

“Nonetheless, the initial indicators are encouraging and it is worth noticing that Apache has the ability to retain the entirety of block 58 with no relinquishment requirements until June of 2026.”

Apache, Total Make New Major Oil Discovery Offshore Suriname

By Irina Slav - Jul 30, 2020

French Total and Apache Corp have made a new, major oil discovery in the offshore Block 58 in Suriname, the two companies said.

“We are thrilled with the results from the Kwaskwasi-1 exploration well. This is the best well we’ve drilled in the basin to date, with the highest net pay in the best quality reservoirs,” Apache chief executive John J. Christmann said. “While we have a lot more work to do, a discovery of this quality and magnitude merits a pace of evaluation that enables the option of accelerated first production.”

This is the third oil discovery at Block 58, Reuters notes, and now the companies, which share the rights to the block 50/50, will move on to a fourth prospect in the block. Total entered Block 58 last year after it bought half of the project from Apache.

The block is part of the prolific Guyana-Suriname Basin and neighbors the Stabroek block, which has so far yielded a dozen oil discoveries, made by Exxon and Hess, tapping a reservoir containing more than 5 billion barrels of crude.

The first offshore oil discovery in Suriname was made in Block 58, from the Maka 1 well, in January this year. At the time, observers commented that this could spur a new oil rush, this time in Suriname, which could boost the investment attractiveness of neighbor Guyana.

Then oil prices collapsed and the pandemic spread, and news about exploration and discoveries grew scarce. And yet, half a dozen companies have already received licenses for exploration offshore Suriname, including Exxon, Petronas, Tullow Oil, and Norway’s Equinor.

The tiny country has estimated oil reserves of 92.5 million barrels, according to its state oil company Staatsolie, and some 17.1 million barrels of probable oil reserves. It currently operates just one producing field, Tambaredjo, which pumps around 16,300 bpd.

Total contracts deepwater rigs for Suriname Block 58
Total E&P Suriname submitted a conditional letter of award to Maersk Drilling’s Maersk Developer and Maersk Valiant deepwater rigs for an exploration and appraisal project in Block 58 offshore Suriname.

OGJ editors Nov 24th, 2020

Total E&P Suriname submitted a conditional letter of award to Maersk Drilling for use of Maersk Developer and Maersk Valiant deepwater rigs for an exploration and appraisal project in Block 58 offshore Suriname. The campaign is expected to commence in early 2021, with estimated combined duration of 500 days.

Maersk Developer is column-stabilized dynamically positioned semisubmersible rig able to operate in water depths up to 10,000 ft. It was delivered in 2009 and is currently operating offshore Suriname.

Maersk Valiant is a high-specification 7th generation drillship with integrated MPD capability which was delivered in 2013. It is currently warm-stacked in Aruba after finishing a campaign in Mexico earlier this year.

The contract is valued by the service provider at $100 million, including rig upgrades and integrated services provided.

Total and Apache Corp. in December 2019 formed a joint venture to explore the block (OGJ Online, Dec. 23, 2019). Apache served as operator for the first three exploration wells before transferring operatorship to Total (OGJ Online, July 29, 2020).

Nouvelle découverte au Suriname.
Suriname Drilling Pays Off for Petronas and Exxon

by Matthew V. Veazey|Rigzone StaffFriday, December 11, 2020

PETRONAS Suriname E&P B.V. (PSEPBV) has made its first hydrocarbon discovery in Suriname, Petronas reported Friday.

Located in Block 52 offshore the South American country, the PSEPBV-operated Sloanea-1 exploration well in Block 52 encountered several hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone zones with good reservoir qualities in the Campanian section, Petronas noted in a written statement. The Maersk Developer semi-submersible rig drilled the Suriname-Guyana basin well to a total depth of 15,682 feet (4,780 meters), added the operator.

“We are pleased with the positive results of the well,” commented Emeliana Rice-Oxley, Petronas’ vice president of upstream, exploration. “It will provide the drive for Petronas to continue exploring in Suriname, which is one of our focus basins in the Americas We look forward to further successful collaboration with our partner ExxonMobil and further strengthen our relationship with the government of the Republic of Suriname, as a solutions partner, progressing towards delivering clean and reliable energy to the market.”

PSEPBV holds 50-percent participating interest in Block 52, with ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Suriname B.V. owning the remainder. Petronas stated that further evaluation is underway to determine the discovery’s full extent. Separately, ExxonMobil pointed out the block encompasses 1.2 million acres (4,749 square kilometers) with water depths ranging from 160 to 3,600 feet (50 to 1,100 meters).

“Our first discovery in Suriname extends ExxonMobil’s leading position in South America, building on our successful investments in Guyana,” commented Mike Cousins, ExxonMobil’s senior vice president of exploration and new ventures. “We will continue to leverage our deepwater expertise and advanced technology to explore frontier environments with the highest value resource potential.”

Total, Apache Make Yet Another Oil Discovery Offshore Suriname

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Jan 14, 2021

Total and Apache Corporation have made their fourth oil and gas discovery offshore Suriname in the Guyana-Suriname basin, the French supermajor said on Thursday.

The discovery adds to numerous other significant oil finds in the Guyana-Suriname basin, where ExxonMobil is also a major operator besides Total and Apache.

The new Total-Apache found oil at the Keskesi East-1 well, in Block 58 off the coast of Suriname, as part of “robust Suriname exploration and appraisal programs in 2021,” as Apache said in November last year.

Kevin McLachlan, Senior Vice President Exploration at Total, said on Thursday, commenting on the latest oil discovery:

“We are also excited, as new operator of the block, to start the appraisal operations designed to characterize the 2020 discoveries, while in parallel start a second exploration campaign on this prolific block in 2021.”

Before the latest find, Apache and Total had already made three oil discoveries in Block 58. The block is part of the prolific Guyana-Suriname Basin and neighbors the Stabroek block, which has so far yielded a dozen oil discoveries, made by Exxon and Hess, tapping a reservoir containing more than 5 billion barrels of crude.

Last month, Exxon and its partner Petronas said they had discovered oil and gas offshore Suriname, which adds to Exxon’s numerous discoveries offshore Guyana in the same Guyana-Suriname basin.

“Our first discovery in Suriname extends ExxonMobil’s leading position in South America, building on our successful investments in Guyana,” Mike Cousins, senior vice president of exploration and new ventures at ExxonMobil, said last month.

The basin offshore Guyana is one of Exxon’s near-term investment priorities, the supermajor said in November when it announced its capital budget for the next five years.

Offshore Guyana, Exxon announced in early September its 18th oil discovery, which adds to its previous estimate of more than 8 billion barrels of discovered recoverable resources in the area.
