The World’s Trendiest Oil Blend

Production from the giant oil field Johan Sverdrup in Norway’s North Sea has reached a rate of above 200,000 barrels per oil per day, less than three weeks after start-up, operator Equinor said on Thursday, while the Sverdrup crude is already winning over clients in Asia.

Equinor had initially expected to start production from Johan Sverdrup—the North Sea giant as it calls it—in November. The Johan Sverdrup field was put in production earlier than that, on October 5, while five wells are currently producing oil, Equinor said in its Q3 results release today.

With expected resources of 2.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent, Johan Sverdrup is one of the largest discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) ever made and one of the largest industrial projects in Norway in the next fifty years, according to Equinor.

All eight pre-drilled wells at Johan Sverdrup are expected to be put in production by the end of next month, Equinor said today, noting that this would give the field a production capacity well above 300,000 bpd. Johan Sverdrup is expected to reach plateau production in the summer of 2020.

Daily production during the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup development is estimated at 440,000 bpd, while peak production is expected to reach 660,000 bpd. At peak production, Johan Sverdrup will account for 25 percent of Norway’s total petroleum production.

The first cargo of Johan Sverdrup oil is expected to leave for customers in Asia this week, Equinor said at the beginning of this week. The first cargo contains one million barrels with a market value of around US$60 million. Future cargoes are expected to contain between 600,000 barrels and 2 million barrels, according to Equinor.

The Sverdrup crude is already a hit among Asian customers even before the first shipment. Chinese Unipec, an independent refiner in China, and South Korean Hyundai Oilbank have purchased cargoes of Johan Sverdrup for delivery in December, refinery officials and traders told Bloomberg this week. Sverdrup’s low sulfur content and medium-density perfectly fit the in-demand crude specifics in Asia right now, according to traders. The new grade is also cheaper than its immediate competitors with which it has been compared, Brazil’s Lula and Angola’s Saturno. If Asian refiners continue to like Sverdrup, Norway could take some market share from Brazil and Angola on the Asian market, according to Bloomberg.

Oil Major Makes 100 Million Barrel North Sea Discovery

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Nov 07, 2019

Norway’s energy giant Equinor has made one of this year’s biggest discoveries in the North Sea estimated to contain up to 100 million barrels of oil equivalent in the most mature area of the basin.

“We are making one of this year’s biggest discoveries in the most mature area of the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), not far from the Troll field. This demonstrates the opportunities that still exist for value creation and revenue from this industry,” Nick Ashton, Equinor’s senior vice president for exploration in Norway and the UK, said in a statement.

Equinor expects to tie back the discovery to existing infrastructure in this mature area. Due to the proximity of existing infrastructure, the discovered resources can be recovered with good profitability and at low carbon dioxide (CO2) intensity, Ashton said.

North Sea Statfjord field enters fifth decade of production
Equinor has commemorated 40 years of production from the Statfjord oil and gas field in the Norwegian North Sea.

Nov 25th, 2019 STAVANGER, Norway

Equinor has commemorated 40 years of production from the Statfjord oil and gas field in the Norwegian North Sea.

Since operations started through the Statfjord A platform on Nov. 24, 1979, the field has produced a cumulative 5.1 Bboe.

The lifespan has exceeded expectations, with discussions at one point of closing down Statfjord A in 1999.

During the 2000s, oil production was declining rapidly, despite large remaining reserves. The problem was finding drilling targets that provided good returns, Equinor said.

The solution turned out to be producing more gas and less oil. Under the Statfjord Late Phase project, gas production has risen by 20% and the field’s lifespan being extended by at least 10 years.

Mobil discovered Statfjord in 1974. Statfjord B entered service in 1982, followed 18 months later by the C platform.

All the concrete jackets for the Statfjord platforms were built in Jåttavågen in Stavanger. Aker Stord constructed the Statfjord A deck, and Rosenberg in Stavanger built the decks for the other two facilities.

Gas is exported through a pipeline runs to the Kårstø gas plant on Norway’s west coast, and mostly on to Continental Europe. The UK share of the gas (14.53%) heads through a pipeline via the Brent field in the northern UK North Sea to Scotland.

The layers containing oil and gas in the field are 2,500-3,000 m (8,202-9,842 ft) subsurface. Statfjord’s single-day production record was set on Jan. 16, 1987, when the facilities produced 850,204 bbl of oil.

https://www.norskpetroleum.no/en/facts/field/statfjord/

"Trop peu trop tard".

Wildcat Well Comes Up Dry In Norwegian Sea

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Jan 08, 2020

German energy group Wintershall Dea found no gas in the second wildcat exploration well that it has drilled in one license in Norway’s Norwegian Sea, after it found gas at the first well nearly two years ago.

Wintershall Dea, operator of license 894, drilled the second wildcat well some 105 kilometers (65 miles) southwest of the new gas field Aasta Hansteen, operated by Equinor.

Equinor started gas production from Aasta Hansteen at the end of 2018. Aasta Hansteen gas is transported through the Polarled pipeline to the Nyhamna terminal for further export to the UK, while condensate produced at the field is loaded into tankers and transported to the market. Aasta Hansteen is bringing gas from a new Norwegian gas province to the markets, operator Equinor says.

The sandstones Wintershall Dea encountered in the second exploration well contain traces of gas, but nothing more, so the well is classified as dry, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) said in a statement on Wednesday.

Equinor to extend life of Statfjord field
Statfjord field operator Equinor and its partners have identified and approved plans to extend production from the North Sea field based on extensive subsurface mapping.

Jan 9th, 2020

Statfjord field operator Equinor and area partners Var Energi, Spirit Energy Norway, Petoro, Idemitsu Petroleum Norway, and Wintershall Dea Norge have identified and approved plans to extend production from the North Sea field based on extensive subsurface mapping. A new business plan will defer decommissioning of Statfjord A, originally set for 2022, to 2027 (OGJ Online, May 2, 2019). The lives of Statfjord B and C will be extended beyond 2035.

About 100 new wells will be drilled towards 2030, requiring upgrades to the three platforms to maintain current production levels beyond 2025.

Operations will be reorganized with the establishment of a new late life unit. The new unit will also have responsibility for the decommissioning projects for the Veslefrikk and Heimdal installations.

Norway Awards 69 Oil Blocks To 28 Firms To Explore Mature Areas

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Jan 14, 2020

Norway awarded on Tuesday 69 new production licenses to 28 companies to explore in areas next to mature developed production areas, securing further exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy said.

“The companies show great interest in further access to new exploration acreage. This means that the industry believes in future value creation on the Norwegian continental shelf,” Norway’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy Sylvi Listhaug said in a statement.

A total of 33 oil companies had applied for licenses in Norway’s 2019 licensing round for exploration and development in the most mature areas of the shelf by the deadline.

Today, Norway awarded 33 licenses in the North Sea, 23 licenses in the Norwegian Sea, and 13 licenses in the Barents Sea.

The total number of awarded licenses this year is lower than the record-breaking 83 licenses awarded in last year’s round in the mature areas.

In this year’s awards, as many as 28 different oil companies, ranging from the large international majors to smaller domestic exploration companies, were offered ownership interests in one or more production licenses, the ministry said.

The companies that won licenses and/or operatorships include Equinor, Aker BP, Shell, ConocoPhillips, Lundin, Suncor, Total, Vår Energi, and Wintershall Dea.

“Hopefully, the exploration in the awarded acreage will result in new discoveries. This is important to ensure employment, value-creation and future government revenue for Norway’s largest industry,” minister Listhaug said.

Norway’s oil production is expected to jump in 2020 through 2023, thanks to the start up of Johan Sverdrup, which began pumping oil in early October 2019. But after Johan Sverdrup and after Johan Castberg in the Barents Sea scheduled for first oil in 2022, Norway doesn’t have major oil discoveries and projects to sustain its oil production after the middle of the 2020s.
