Pétrole: le Qatar octroie six milliards de dollars de contrats pour produire plus

La compagnie nationale du Qatar, QatarEnergy, a annoncé mercredi avoir octroyé des contrats d'une valeur de plus six milliards de dollars pour développer le plus grand champ pétrolier de l'émirat du Golfe.

Il s'agit des quatre principaux contrats de construction du projet d'extension d'Al-Shaheen, qui vise à augmenter la production de brut du pays "d'environ 100.000 barils par jour", a-t-elle indiqué dans un communiqué.

Ce champ offshore est exploité depuis 2017 par North Oil Company (NOC), une co-entreprise entre QatarEnergy (70%) et la compagnie française TotalEnergies (30%), et produit actuellement près 300.000 barils par jour.

"En attribuant ces contrats, nous faisons un pas important vers la réalisation du plein potentiel du champ d'Al-Shaheen, qui produit aujourd'hui près de la moitié du pétrole brut du Qatar", a commenté le ministre de l'Energie et PDG de QatarEnergy, Saad Al-Kaabi, cité dans le communiqué.

Le projet, qui prévoit notamment le forage de plus de 200 puits pétroliers, s'étendra sur une période de cinq ans, avec un début de production annoncé pour 2027.

Il permettra à terme de "développer plus de 550 millions de barils de pétrole", selon QatarEnergy.

QatarEnergy and its partner Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) have started construction on their $6bn Ras Laffan Petrochemicals project in Qatar.

The ceremonial foundation stone for the integrated polymers complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City was laid by the Amir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

In January 2023, a final investment decision (FID) was made to construct the petrochemicals complex. By October 2023, the project had secured $4.4bn in financing through a senior debt financing package.

CPChem is overseeing the engineering, procurement, and construction of the facility, providing project management services. Site preparation commenced in June 2022, with startup anticipated in late 2026.

Spanning 435 acres, the Ras Laffan Petrochemicals project will feature an ethane processing plant with a capacity of 2.1 million tons per annum of ethylene, positioning it as the largest ethane cracker in the Middle East and one of the world’s largest.

By the end of 2026, the facility is expected to elevate Qatar’s ethylene production capacity by over 40% and its overall petrochemical production capacity to approximately 14 million tons per annum.

Furthermore, the facility will include two polyethylene trains generating a combined annual output of 1.7 million tons of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polymer products. This will boost Qatar’s overall production by about 50%.

Qatar Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy president and CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said: “The Ras Laffan Petrochemical Complex is being built at a cost of six billion dollars, making it the largest investment in history of QatarEnergy in Qatar’s petrochemicals sector.

“There is no doubt that this is an important landmark in QatarEnergy’s downstream expansion strategy as it will reinforce our integrated position as a global energy player and generate significant economic benefits for the country.”

QatarEnergy holds a 70% equity share in the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Complex, with CPChem owning the remaining 30%.

Designed with modern, energy-saving technology, the Ras Laffan Petrochemicals project is anticipated to have a lower greenhouse gas emissions intensity compared to similar global facilities.

The polyethylene units will utilise CPChem’s MarTech loop slurry process to produce high-density polyethylene, primarily targeting export from Qatar.

CPChem president and CEO Bruce Chinn said: “This project advances CPChem’s long-held strategy to expand its operations in regions where feedstock is reliable and abundant and will help meet the global demand for polyethylene products.

“CPChem and QatarEnergy have a long history of safely building and operating petrochemical facilities, and this celebration represents the next step toward bringing these world-scale assets into our successful portfolio here in Qatar.”

QatarEnergy switches on 875 MW of solar
The inauguration of two solar projects with a combined capacity of 875 MW has more than doubled Qatar’s installed solar capacity.

State-owned petroleum company QatarEnergy has inaugurated two solar projects with a combined capacity of 875 MW.

The Ras Laffan and Mesaieed PV power plants are located in the industrial city of Ras Laffan in northeastern Qatar.

Together they more than double Qatar’s cumulative solar capacity, taking the total to 1,675 MW.

In 2023, JA Solar and Samsung C&T signed a module supply agreement covering more than 1.6 million DeepBlue 3.0 modules for the project.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony earlier this week, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, said Qatar has “moved beyond relying on the expertise of others for the construction, operation, and maintenance of solar power plants, and has begun implementing such projects using our own national expertise.”

In September 2024, QatarEnergy unveiled plans for a 2 GW solar plant in Dukhan, western Qatar. The project is forecast to begin operations in 2029.

Qatar is targeting a renewable energy portfolio of more than 4 GW by the end of the decade.

QatarEnergy selects Samsung C&T for 2 GW solar project
South Korea’s Samsung C&T Engineering & Construction Group is set to build Qatar’s largest solar project to date. The first gigawatt of the 2 GW project is expected to be online by the end of 2028.

State-owned petroleum company QatarEnergy has picked Samsung C&T Engineering & Construction Group to build the 2 GW Dukhan solar power project.

An agreement for the construction of the project, to be located 80 kilometers west of Doha, was signed between the two parties earlier this week. Samsung C&T has said that the project is the largest solar power plant ever to be built by a Korean construction company.

The 2 GW Dukhan project, first announced in September 2024, is to be developed in two phases. The first phase is expected to add 1 GW of solar to the grid by the end of 2028, with the second phase scheduled for completion by mid-2029.

QatarEnergy’s solar portfolio features the 800 MW Al-Kharsaah solar power plant, which began operations in 2022, and an 875 MW project across Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, also built by Samsung C&T, which was switched on earlier this year.

“When completed, the Dukhan solar power plant, along with Al Kharsaah, Mesaieed and Ras Laffan solar power plants will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7 million tons annually, while contributing up to 30% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand,” said Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy.

Qatar’s cumulative solar capacity stood at 1,860 MW at the end of 2024, according to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The country has set a target of deploying 4 GW of renewables by the end of the decade.

Qatar: des drones iraniens visent une centrale électrique et un complexe gazier

Deux drones iraniens ont visé lundi une centrale électrique et un complexe terrestre de traitement du gaz au Qatar, selon le ministère de la Défense de l'Etat du Golfe.

Un drone a pris pour cible un réservoir d'eau appartenant à une centrale électrique à Mesaieed, également une base clé pour la production de gaz naturel, à 40 km au sud de Doha.

Un autre "a visé une installation énergétique dans la cité industrielle de Ras Laffan, appartenant à QatarEnergy", à 80 km au nord de la capitale, a précisé un communiqué du ministère.

Le riche émirat est l'un des plus grands producteurs mondiaux de gaz naturel liquéfié (GNL), aux côtés des États-Unis, de l'Australie et de la Russie.

Le Qatar partage le plus grand réservoir de gaz naturel au monde avec l'Iran. QatarEnergy, son entreprise publique, estime que la partie qatarie, le North Field, contient environ 10% des réserves mondiales de gaz naturel connues.

QatarEnergy annonce suspendre la production de GNL à la suite d'attaques iraniennes

La compagnie énergétique publique qatarie QatarEnergy a annoncé lundi avoir interrompu la production de gaz naturel liquéfié (GNL) à la suite d'attaques iraniennes contre les installations de deux de ses principaux sites de traitement de gaz.

"En raison des attaques militaires perpétrées contre les installations de QatarEnergy situées dans les zones industrielles de Ras Laffan et de Mesaieed, au Qatar, QatarEnergy a cessé la production de gaz naturel liquéfié (GNL) et de produits dérivés", a indiqué le géant des hydrocarbures dans un communiqué.

Deux drones iraniens ont visé une centrale électrique et un complexe terrestre de traitement du gaz, selon le ministère de la Défense.

Le prix du gaz européen, déjà en très forte progression lundi matin, se sont envolés de plus de 50% après l'annonce de la suspension la production de GNL.

Vers 12H55 GMT, le contrat à terme du TTF néerlandais, considéré comme la référence européenne, s'affichait en hausse de plus de 48% à 47,320 euros le mégawattheure, après avoir atteint son plus haut niveau depuis février 2025, à 47,700 euros par mégawattheure (+52,38%). Il reste encore très loin des niveaux atteints en 2022 au début de la guerre en Ukraine, où il avait dépassé les 300 euros.

Téhéran mène pour la troisième journée consécutive des frappes contre des pays du Golfe abritant des bases américaines, en riposte à l'attaque lancée samedi par Israël et les Etats-Unis.

- Plus grand réservoir au monde -

D'après le ministère qatari de la Défense, un drone iranien a visé une installation énergétique à Ras Laffan, à 80 km au nord de la capitale sur la côte nord, principal site de production de gaz naturel liquéfié du pays.

Un autre drone a pris pour cible un réservoir d'eau d'une centrale électrique à Mesaieed, également une base clé pour la production de gaz naturel, à 40 km au sud de Doha.

Ces attaques n'ont pas fait de victimes, selon les autorités.

Le Qatar est l'un des principaux producteurs mondiaux de gaz naturel liquéfié, aux côtés des Etats-Unis, de l'Australie et de la Russie.

Il partage avec l'Iran le plus grand réservoir de gaz naturel du monde.

QatarEnergy estime que la partie du réservoir appartenant à l'Etat du Golfe, le North Field, renferme environ 10% des réserves connues de gaz naturel de la planète.

Ces dernières années, le Qatar a conclu une série de contrats de fourniture de GNL à long terme avec le français Total, le britannique Shell, l'indien Petronet, le chinois Sinopec et l'italien Eni, entre autres.
