How energy-deprived areas benefit from vanadium redox batteries

21 April 2019

Vanadium redox flow batteries or VRFB are capable of providing free energy to power-deprived communities for more than to two years without hitches, a brief issued by VSUN Energy states.

The Perth-based company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian Vanadium , followed up with one of its first customers, the Stuart family from a farming town in Western Australia, and learned that for the past 30 months their electricity didn't fail once and, on top of that, they didn't pay a dime for it.

The Stuarts were pioneers in acquiring a vanadium redox flow cell in the country. They have been using it for a native tree nursery they own in the southwestern part of the state where they needed three-phase power instead of the provided single-phase power.

According to VSUN, the CellCube system they installed stores energy from a 15kW solar photovoltaic system, enough to run for 10 hours at maximum output.

"They also wanted the ability to boost the power supply, should they further expand the nursery. With VRFBs, increasing the power supply simply requires another vanadium electrolyte tank," the renewable energy firm said in the press release.

By relying on a vanadium electrolyte solution held in storage tanks, vanadium redox flow batteries can store energy from renewable sources, including solar, wind or wave power, and release it when required.

VSUN's documentation states that the batteries can be charged and discharged at the same time and can be cycled often and deeply. They are also supposed to have a lower risk of fire than lithium batteries.

Vanadium occurs naturally in about 65 minerals and in fossil fuel deposits. It is produced from steel smelter slag, from flue dust of heavy oil, as a byproduct of uranium mining or directly from magnetite. The latter is the most common method.

Around 98% of the vanadium ore that is mined is mined in South Africa, Russia, China, and Brazil, and most of it is used in steel manufacturing applications. Yet, the silvery metal’s importance to the energy sector is also growing rapidly, with more than 5% of global output used in energy storage.

This growing interest from the battery sector has led to a rise in vanadium prices, which grew by 450% in the past three years and more than doubled in 2018.

Un important projet de Vanadium en Australie.
Australian government sees potential in vanadium

Valentina Ruiz Leotaud | September 8, 2019

Australia’s federal government gave ‘major project status’ to Australian Vanadium’s namesake project located in the Murchison province.

“Vanadium is on the critical minerals list for Australia and the US, which means there is a market there for this globally significant resource,” the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Matt Canavan, said in a media statement. “This project will have a significant impact on the Western Australian economy, especially the Meekatharra region with the creation of around 400 direct construction jobs and a further 200 ongoing jobs.”

The granting of ‘major project status,’ which lasts for three years, provides formal recognition of the national strategic significance of the project. It also gives the miner a single point of contact for assistance with navigating the approval process and relevant government legislation. “This streamlined approach has the potential to result in accelerated approvals,” the company said in a press release.

The Australian Vanadium project consists of a high-grade V-Ti-Fe deposit located approximately 43 kilometres south of the mining town of Meekatharra in Western Australia and 740 kilometres north-east of Perth.

The property extends for 260 square kilometres and it has a total mineral resource of 183.6Mt at 0.76% vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) consisting of a measured mineral resource of 10.2Mt at 1.11% V2O5, an indicated mineral resource of 40.7Mt at 0.66% V2O5, and an inferred mineral resource of 132.7Mt at 0.77% V2O5.

According to its owner, the mineral resource includes a distinct massive magnetite high-grade zone of 96.7 Mt at 1.00% V2O5.

The project is based on a proposed open-pit mine, crushing, milling and beneficiation plant and refining plant for final conversion and sale of high-quality vanadium pentoxide for use in steel, specialty alloys and energy storage markets. First production is expected in 2022.

ScandiVanadium begins diamond drilling at Skåne Vanadium Project in Sweden
Drilling will test the Dictyonema seam and provide core samples for metallurgical work.

9 Aug 2019

ScandiVanadium Ltd (ASX:SVD) has started drilling at its Skåne Vanadium Project in southern Sweden, testing the thickness and grade of the Dictyonema seam as well as providing core metallurgical test work.

Drilling is expected to take three weeks to complete and is targeting the Hörby licence at the northern end of the project area.

Targeting vanadium-bearing Dictyonema seam
Drilling at Hörby will comprise diamond holes of up to 125 metres depth targeting the prospective vanadium-bearing Dictyonema seam which occurs near-surface at the prospect.

The area is one of forest re-growth covering an area previously excavated for peat.

Extensive drilling for water has mapped the stratigraphy and showed the target strata dips 10 to 15 degrees southeast.

Unusually high concentrations of vanadium
Skåne is on the southernmost tip of Sweden, about an hour’s drive from Malmö and 90 minutes from the nearest international airport at Copenhagen.

It consists of 11 granted licences totalling about 220 square kilometres.

The presence of unusually high concentrations of vanadium in the Dictyonema formation was first identified in 1940 when mining and production of vanadium pentoxide was conducted during World War II.

Le minier avance :
According to Minchin, formerly geology director of the private equity firm African Minerals Exploration and Development, the formation has unique properties, being high in vanadium, but very low in chemically precipitated heavy metals such as uranium, molybdenum, nickel and zinc.

The vanadium is also encased in clay rather than embedded in crystals, meaning it can be recovered through less environmentally and energy-intensive processes than at most other vanadium quarries, dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of batteries made from it.

Un projet de mine de Vanadium dans le Queensland, Australie. 470 millions de dollars à investir, début de construction fin d' année.
Queensland to streamline approvals for vanadium mine

February 27, 2020

A proposed $470 million vanadium mine in North West Queensland has this week been declared a prescribed project. The project will include facilities for processing the vanadium for use in batteries, chemical applications and in high-strength steel production.

“The proponent will mine and process vanadium for use in the growth market of vanadium batteries and new technologies within the renewable energy sector, and in high-strength steel production,” Queensland’s Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning, Cameron Dick, said.

“Initially, 10,000 tonnes per annum will be mined at the site, which is in the North West Minerals Provence, with the workforce expected to be largely sourced locally and housed in the region.

“In addition to the mine, the project includes a processing plant, rail spur line into the mine site, workforce accommodation village and associated infrastructure including an off-site water supply dam and 20km pipeline to the project site.”

The declaration as a prescribed project helps to streamline approvals and fast-track delivery of the project. The coordinator-general, if necessary, will be able to intervene in the approvals process to ensure timely decision making for the project.

The mine will be operated by Multicom Resources, a Queensland based exploration and mining company, which been working on the project since 2014 when exploration activities revealed significant amounts of vanadium within the sedimentary rocks in the area.

“We are very grateful for the continued support provided by the Queensland Government to the Saint Elmo Vanadium Project,” Multicom Resources Limited CEO, Shaun McCarthy, said

“Gaining the required permits and approvals in a timely and efficient manner is a critical aspect of our development plans.”

Construction could commence in late 2020, with the first vanadium exports proposed to commence in 2021. The project has an anticipated 30-year life span

The project is consistent with the Queensland government’s North West Queensland Economic Diversification Strategy, which provides investment in developing strong supply chains and creating sustainable communities, according to Dick.

“The Saint Elmo project will contribute to long-term sustainable growth in North West Queensland,” Dick said.

First Vanadium (TSXV: FVAN) has completed a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for its Carlin vanadium project in Elko County, about 10 km south of the town of Carlin in north-central Nevada.

“Getting to the PEA level for Carlin was a significant milestone for us and is a key part of the process for unlocking the value of the project,” Paul Cowley, the company’s president and CEO, said in an interview.

The early stage study estimated an open-pit mine life of 11 years producing a total of 180 million lbs. vanadium oxide (V205).

The study also envisioned processing an additional five years of stockpile feed that would generate an annual average of 11 million lbs. V205 after the mine reaches the end of its operating life. Sulphuric acid and electricity from the processing plant would then be sold for a four-year period.

“The deposit is located in significant mining hub, so as we approach the end of the life of the vanadium mine the processing plant could continue to provide acid as well as electricity to mines operating in the district, so we won’t need to find buyers for it.”

The PEA estimated average operating costs for the large-scale open pit project of $4.81 per lb. V2O5 for the first 10 years and $5.17 per lb. of V2O5 over the life of the mine.

“The most significant component of the PEA is the low operating costs, which fall into the lower quartile for vanadium production and therefore provides us with a significant advantage over other vanadium producers, whose costs are generally much higher,” Crowley said.

The PEA forecast pre-production capital requirements for the project of $535 million, and calculated an after-tax net present value of $29 million at a discount rate of 6%, an internal rate of return of 7% and a payback period of 7.7 years. The study used a V205 price of $10.65 per pound.

The project has indicated resources of 24.64 million tonnes grading 0.615% V2O5 for 303 million lbs. contained V2O5, and inferred resources of 7.19 million tonnes grading 0.520% V2O5 for 75 million lbs. of V2O5. The estimate used a cut-off grade of 0.3% V2O5.

Cowley noted that Carlin could become a source of much-needed vanadium for the U.S.

The bulk of the vanadium in the U.S. is currently sourced from China. As a consequence, the U.S. Department of the Interior has deemed vanadium as one of the commodities considered critical to the country’s economic and national security.

AVL identifies further revenue potential at flagship project in Western Australia

Australian Vanadium Limited (AVL) is planning to build a processing plant near its project located at Gabanintha, Western Australia.

The move is expected to allow the company to profit from otherwise wasted ‘iron-rich calcine material’.

AVL noted that the proposed processing plant is subject to a feasibility study and regulatory approvals. It would produce approximately 10,115 tonnes (t) of vanadium flake per annum.

This would generate 922,500t of iron rich calcine material, produces as a waste stream from the vanadium processing plant.
AVL believe the generated iron rich calcine material could then be used to add value to the operation.

AVL managing director Vincent Algar said: “Having a vanadium processing plant located close to the coast, combined with the amount of iron rich calcine that’s forecast to be generated by our Project, offers a big opportunity to unlock the value from what would otherwise be waste material.

“Our preliminary tests and market review support a technical path to upgrade the material to be a valuable co-product, unique to AVL’s operation.”

The company’s Gabanintha vanadium project in the Meekatharra region of Western Australia is one of the most prominent vanadium mines in development in the world. It will produce vanadium pentoxide for the steel, speciality alloys, and energy storage markets.

A pre-feasibility study (PFS) of the open-pit project was concluded in December 2018.

The vanadium project is expected to employ a beneficiation process to produce approximately 900,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of V2O5 magnetite concentrate. It is expected to have an initial mine life of 17 years.

In March 2017, AVL identified significant Cobalt assays in the Gabanintha vanadium project by reviewing previous drill programmes.
