Un gros projet de mine d' Argent en Argentine en passe de se débloquer : le Navidad silver mine
Pan American Silver gets long-awaited approval for $1 billion Argentina mine

Bloomberg News | December 16, 2021

New York-traded shares of Pan American Silver jumped as much as 8.6%, the most since May, after provincial lawmakers in Argentina paved the way for the company’s $1 billion Navidad silver mine.

Lawmakers in Chubut on Wednesday voted in favor of a zoning law allowing mining in the Gastre-Telsen zone of the province, where the Vancouver-based company has been planning to dig for silver.

“This is a first step after 19 years of waiting for the zoning law,” Ricardo Zarandon, country manager for Pan American, said in an interview.

The move by Chubut will be closely observed by global mining companies amid decades of wrangling in Argentine provinces, where they’ve been unable to dig up huge mineral resources because of environmental opposition and political infighting.

The next steps, Zarandon said, are for Chubut Governor Mariano Arcioni to enact the law and, within 90 days of that, for the province to publish specific rules needed to put the law into practice.

“We’ll then have the legal instruments to evaluate the project, finish the environmental impact study and request our permits,” Zarandon said.

Average silver price expected to drop 1% to $24.80 per ounce this year
According to the Silver Institute, global industrial silver demand is expected to grow 8% this year due to strong demand in all key sectors, including the PV industry.

FEBRUARY 10, 2022 EMILIANO BELLINI

The overall global demand for silver is expected to grow 8% year-on-year to reach 111.2 billion ounces in 2022, according to U.S.-based independent precious metals research consultancy The Silver Institute.

“The increase will be driven by record silver industrial fabrication, which is forecast to improve by 5%, as silver’s use expands in both traditional and critical green technologies,” the analyst said. “The outlook for silver’s use in the photovoltaic (PV) industry remains bright. Government commitments to carbon neutrality have resulted in a rapid expansion of green energy projects.”

Considering that the global photovoltaic market may cross the 200 GW threshold for newly deployed capacity this year, The Silver Institute also predicted that silver demand in the solar industry may reach an all-time high in 2022, without providing specific figures.

“Silver industrial offtake (accounting for more than half of total silver demand) is projected to strengthen further, establishing a new record high in 2022. Ongoing improvements in the global economy will give silver industrial applications an additional boost, mitigating near-term headwinds from supply chain bottlenecks and the challenges in certain regions from the ongoing Covid pandemic,” it also stated.

The average silver price for 2022 is expected to reach $24.80 per ounce, which would be around 1% lower than $25.14 a year earlier. The Silver Institute said that, despite the slight drop, this year's average price still represents a historically high annual average.

Due to increasing silver prices, the share of silver in PV module costs rose last year by around 5% to account for approximately 10% of the total, according to U.S.-based analyst Matt Watson.

In June 2020, The Silver Institute noted that the ability of PV producers to reduce silver content in solar cell production – a process referred to as ‘thrifting’ – had reduced since 2016 but they anticipated the average 111mg of the precious metal needed for each solar cell in 2019 would nevertheless fall to 80mg by 2030. With silver prices on the rise, or at the current levels, it is expected that the rate of thrifting will continue to increase.

Silver prices rose 22% in 2021, but slight decrease expected this year
The US-based Silver Institute’s “World Silver Survey 2022” report shows that the price of the metal will fall slightly this year, despite the global economic impact of the war in Ukraine.

APRIL 21, 2022 EMILIANO BELLINI

Silver prices increased by 22% in 2021 and reached a nine-year high of $25.14 per Troy ounce in 2021, when global demand for the precious metal rose by 19% year on year, according to the “World Silver Survey 2022,” which was recently published by the Silver Institute.

The report also reveals that silver was sold at the $24 to $28 range during the first half of last year, and reached then a lower range of $22 to $26 during the second half.

Global silver demand surpassed pre-pandemic levels and reached 32,627 tons, which represents the highest level since 2015. Industrial fabrication grew by 9.3% to 15,807 tons last year.

“This mainly reflected the effects of a resumption of industrial operations and the re-opening of businesses as economies began to recover from Covid. Other supportive factors included the demands of the home working economy, a boom for consumer electronics, 5G infrastructure investment, inventory build along the supply pipeline and rising end-use in the green economy, chiefly in photovoltaics,” said the Silver Institute.

The report also reveals that silver demand in the solar industry grew by 13% to 3,536 tons last year. It is expected to climb by another 12% to 3,950 tons this year.

The researchers said that the current transition to TOPCon modules and the ongoing adoption of HJT heterojunction cells, which require 30% to 80% more silver than current panels, may push the PV industry towards higher silver consumption.

“As such, it is forecast that PV silver demand will stay healthy as growing capacity additions counter the negative of the finger width being expected to drop a further 30% to 25μm by 2025,” the Silver Institute said, noting that the “finger width” is the width of the lines of silver paste that are printed onto the front and rear of panels.

Looking forward, the Silver Institute said that the boost to precious metal prices from the war in Ukraine will prove short-lived. It claimed that silver’s traditional macro drivers will soon take center stage.

“We believe the silver price will keep to its recent trading range over the next few months, even after support from the Ukrainian conflict wanes,” it warned. “Later in the year, however, liquidations and price downside will be hard to avoid.”

Overall, the Silver Institute forecast the silver price will average $23.90 per Troy ounce in 2022.
