Tin prices face pressure from rising output, says ITA

Reuters | November 29, 2019

Rising refined tin output will cut the global market deficit next year and weigh on prices as new Chinese smelters ramp up and Indonesia also expands production, the International Tin Association said on Friday.

Benchmark tin prices have already been the worst performer on the London Metal Exchange this year, sliding 16%.

“The average price has declined quite significantly from last year and we would expect next year to also be quite a difficult year for tin,” James Willoughby, manager of market intelligence for the association, told a seminar in London.

Refined output is expected to increase by 5.8% to 352,000 tonnes next year while demand rises by only 0.4% to 353,900 tonnes, according to ITA forecasts.

That means the global deficit is forecast to fall to 1,900 tonnes in 2020 from 20,000 tonnes this year.

Willoughby, however, said the big deficit for this year may be revised down because producers are not thought to have stuck to cuts announced in September. The announced cuts amounted to about 30,000 tonnes, equating to about 8% of global supply.

“We have a significant deficit pegged for this year, but that assumes that refined producers stick to their production cuts,” he said.

“In Indonesia, we haven’t quite seen that as drastic as previously thought, so this is likely to change.”

Both mine and smelter production is expected to rise next year in major producers China and Indonesia, Willoughby said.

“There is quite a lot of (refined) capacity in the market already and this is only going to increase. Over the next few years this increase is estimated at about 80,000 tonnes,” he said.

Both the world’s top two producers – China’s Yunnan Tin and Indonesia’s PT Timah – are expected to increase capacity, but there may also be consolidation because many smaller smelters are operating at less than 50% capacity, Willoughby said.

On the demand side, the picture was brighter for 2020 after a sharp fall in semiconductor sales this year.

The biggest use of tin, making up nearly half of demand, is for solder used chiefly in the electronics industry to connect components.

“We’re extremely optimistic on the Chinese solder market next year,” Willoughby said.

Unfortunately, the constant miniaturisation of electronics means that solder demand does not directly follow demand for semiconductors, but the longer-term outlook for tin is strong, said Jeremy Pearce, technology team leader at the association.

A fourth industrial revolution will spark an explosion in new electronics needed for the so-called internet of things, robotics and artificial intelligence by the mid to late 2020s, he said.

“Tin is the glue that will hold all this together,” Pearce said.

AfriTin targets 50% phase one lift in production of Uis tin mine in Namibia

By David McKay -June 17, 2020

AFRITIN aimed to increase production from the first phase of its Uis project in Namibia by 50% following an optimisation study which also planned mining lithium ore in order to generate by-product revenue.

The first phase optimisation plan, which was interrupted by COVID-19 related lockdown regulations in Namibia, will ultimately lead to a second phase expansion that will see AfriTin supply about 1% of the world’s tin supply.

Based on its financial evaluation, optimising phase one of the project will produce a net present value of $122m and an internal rate of return of as much as 60%, the company said in an update on Tuesday

Tin miner Metals X confirms promising reserve, economics from Area 5 at Renison

17th June 2020 BY: MARLENY ARNOLDI

Image

Australia's largest tin producer, Metals X, on Wednesday published results of its Area 5 mining optimisation study and an updated mine plan for the Renison tin operation, in Tasmania.

Renison is 50% owned by Metals X through the Bluestone Mines Tasmania joint venture (JV).

The study was commissioned in August 2019 to determine the optimal development strategy for Area 5, as a starting point for the Renison project.

The study determined that Renison now has a 3.3-million tonnes ore reserve grading 1.87% tin, for 61 900 t of contained tin in area 5. The total Renison ore reserve has increased by 46% to 120 300 t of contained tin.

The mine life of the Renison project has been extended to ten years.

Production from the high-grade Area 5 will contribute 40% of total contained tin mined over the ten-year mine life.

The company intends to mine between 8 500 t/y and 9 000 t/y of tin in the first two years of operation, followed by mining 10 000 t/y thereafter.

Metals X estimates that it can produce a total 98 000 t of tin in concentrate over the mine life.

Area 5 requires about $50-million in capital expenditure, for ventilation, backfill, electrical and pumping infrastructure, as well as additional mobile equipment.

At a modelled tin price of between A$23 500/t and A$24 500/t, and all-in sustaining costs of about $20 000/t in the first two years and about $17 000/t from the third year, the project can generate a cash flow of $300-million.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation are expected to be about $476-million a year.

The project has a net present value of $185-million, assuming a current spot price for tin of A$24 800/t.

CEO Mike Spreadborough said Area 5 was an "outstanding" addition to the already substantial ore reserves at Renison. With a mine life of ten years, of which 82% of the project has proven and probable ore reserve status, Renison is well set to deliver substantial returns to the company over coming years.

The company is now focusing on detailed mine design, engineering and execution planning for the Area 5 project, as well as continued metallurgical and margin improvement.

What does the future look like for Australian tin?

By Matthew Hall 2 sept 2020

....
Renison began its Area 5 mining optimisation study in August 2019 to identify the best development and mining strategy for the Area 5 ore body. The study revealed an ore reserve of 2.3Mt at 1.87% tin for 61,900 tonnes of contained tin, with the total Renison ore reserve increasing by 46% to 120,300 tonnes of contained tin. The 2020 life-of-mine (LOM) plan provides for a mine life of 10 years, with a total of 9.27Mt mined in that period at an average grade of 1.38% tin, for 128,000 tonnes of contained tin.

The Area 5 development requires approximately $50m-$55m of capital to be invested over the next two years, predominantly in underground infrastructure. The operators are optimistic about the prospects of further mining at Renison, with Metals X’s LOM plan suggesting potential to extend the mine life beyond 10 years owing to Renison’s existing resources and exploration.
......
A May 2019 resource estimate defined a total mineral resource for the Heemskirk tin deposits of 6.6Mt at 1.1% tin for 70,390 tonnes of contained tin, and Stellar Resources claim that the Heemskirk deposits share the same ore genesis and geology as the Renison operation situated just 18km to the North East. The company hopes to attract investors with the comparisons to Renison, which has had its mine life extended several times throughout its history.

Cornish hits high-grade tin-copper at South Crofty

Bruno Venditti | September 9, 2020

Image
South Crofty tin-copper mine (Credit: Cornish)

Cornish Metals reported high-grade tin-copper results from its diamond drilling program at South Crofty mine, located in the Central Mining District of Cornwall, South West England.

The highlight intercepts include 5.16% copper over 0.73 metres starting at 378 metres, with 3.43% Sn Eq, at metal prices of $18,400 a tonne for tin and $6,600 a tonne for copper.

According to the company, three additional lode structures have been intersected, the results for which will be released as are tabulated. The dominant lode structures at South Crofty have strike lengths in excess of 3,500 metres and can be traced from surface to at least 1,000 metres depth, the company said.

“This is an excellent start to the drill program, which has been designed
to demonstrate the ability to infill drill the current resource from surface, to intersect multiple lodes from single drill holes, and to show the potential exists to materially increase the current resource,” Cornish CEO Richard Williams said.

“In the context of tin deposits, these are high-grade intersects and are in line with the historic production grades from the South Crofty Mine.”

South Crofty is considered the most important tin mine in the UK and hosts one of the highest grade tin resources worldwide. Tin mining in the region dates back to 2,300 B.C.

Cornish (previously Strongbow) bought the underground mine, which holds about 30,000 tonnes of tin, in 2016, though it had been shut down since 1998, as low metal prices made the operation financially unsustainable.

South Crofty, approximately 390km drive west of London on the Celtic Sea Coast, was the last tin mine in Europe when it closed. Several companies attempted to revive the flooded mines between 2001 and 2013, but due to persistent poor market conditions the assets were put into administration in 2013.

Osisko Gold Royalties (TSX-OR) is Cornish’s largest shareholder, currently owning 32.7% of the issued share capital.

Cornish Metals granted key permit for United Downs

Cecilia Jamasmie | March 24, 2021

Cornish Metals (LON, TSX-V: CUSN) plans to begin drilling at its United Downs copper-tin project in Cornwall, southwest England, following the local mineral authority’s concession of development rights.

The Canadian miner, formerly known as Strongbow Explorations, said it will drill the first of five separate sites beginning April 6.

The move follows up on the discovery of a high-grade mineralization zone last year. The mining district where the discovery was made — Gwennap —had the world’s richest copper production in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

“The receipt of the drilling permit from Cornwall Council is an important step in our aim of delineating a new high-grade copper-tin resource at United Downs,” CEO Richard Williams said in the statement.

The first phase of the program will focus on tracing the recently discovered high-grade copper-tin structure along strike and down to a depth of up to 500m, the company said.

The metals of antiquity – tin

Rob Tyson - Mining International Ltd. | March 26, 2021

The metals of antiquity are the seven metals which humans had identified and found use for in prehistoric times: gold, silver, copper, tin, lead, iron, and mercury.1

Although the circumstances surrounding the original discovery of tin – when, where, how – have never been established with any degree of certainty, and have given rise to numerous theories over the centuries, there’s no doubting the metal’s importance to early civilisations.
