Tin Supply Is Running Dangerously Low

By Stuart Burns - May 16, 2022

> A supply shortage in the tin market has kept prices elevated in recent weeks.
> Slowing demand and increasing output could help alleviate some of the upward pressure on the market in the second half of the year.

Despite a strong rebound in output, the tin market is still dangerously short on supply. How will this affect the tin price forecast? Experts are rushing to weigh in.

According to Reuters, the International Tin Association (ITA) reported that global refined tin production increased by 11% to 378,400 metric tons last year. But while output is up, so is demand. This is especially true of the electronics sector, which also accounted for the vast majority of last year’s demand.

In December 2021, overall demand growth was 32.6% year over year. By March, it had cooled somewhat to around 23%. That said, a Capital Economics report states that demand is still substantial enough to keep prices elevated in the short term.

The Market Remains Incredibly Tight

The overall tightness of the market is evident in the inventory levels and the resulting physical delivery premiums. LME inventory levels are only up by 640 tons since January, topping out at a critically low 2,685 tons. Experts have been quick to note that this figure represents just two days’ worth of global usage.

Not surprisingly, physical delivery premiums remain high as well. Indeed, Reuters recently reported that Fastmarket US Midwest premium had reached $2450 per ton over the LME cash price. This is down from last August’s $3950, but still way above the $600 levels seen in early 2021.

Meanwhile, shipments destined for China out of Port Klang and Singapore are counteracting the modest physical deliveries into Antwerp and Baltimore. In fact, China turned from a net exporter to a net importer this year, sucking in nearly 2000 tons and further ratcheting up pressure on metal availability.

It all begs the question: do the next 12-18 months promise more of the same? Not necessarily. Sure, supply remains tight. However, as post-pandemic consumption migrates from consumer goods to services, demand for electronics goods is likely to cool.

Multiple Factors Still Play for the 2022 Tin Price Forecast

According to Capital Economics, growth in the sale of semi-conductors started to slow in 2021. This is a trend that may accelerate as surging interest rates dampen spending across the Western World. Tin prices remain stubbornly high for now, but recovering mine output and cooling demand should weaken support from these price levels in H2.

All in all, it’s probable we’ll see lower LME and reduced physical delivery premiums in the second half of the year.

Alphamin boosts inferred resource at Mpama South tin deposit by 46%

Staff Writer | June 3, 2022

Tin producer Alphamin Resources (TSXV: AFM) has released an updated resource estimate for the Mpama South project, highlighting a 46% increase in the inferred category based on assays from 22 additional extensional drill holes.

The Mpama South inferred resource now stands at 4.99 million tonnes grading 2.50% Sn for 124,700 tonnes of contained tin. The indicated resource stayed at 840,000 tonnes grading 2.53% Sn for 21,400 tonnes of contained tin.

According to the company, there is significant potential for additional resource growth at Mpama South, as a substantial quantity of subsequent drilling has yet to be included in this update.

Around 27 additional holes have been drilled within and beyond the limits of the updated mineral resource, the majority of which are part of an infill drilling campaign targeting conversion of inferred resources to indicated resource confidence. The infill drill campaign will be completed by July, and an updated resource is expected to be announced in Q3 2022.

Meanwhile, extensional drilling down dip and in the shallower northern portion of Mpama South will resume in June to carry on extending known mineralization, which is still open in multiple directions.

The Mpama South project is located about 1 km away from Alphamin’s Mpama North mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mpama North currently produces about 3% of the world’s mined tin at 12,000 tonnes per annum and has a mine life of 12.5 years.

In March 2022, the company released its the first mineral resource estimate for Mpama South, as well as a positive preliminary economic assessment (PEA) that showed an estimated annual tin production of 7,232 tonnes.

Completion of the project, which is still in early development, would take Alphamin’s total annual tin production to nearly 20,000 tonnes, representing 6.6% of the global total.

Auxico and CEMAL form JV for tin tailings in Brazil

June 8, 2022

Auxico Resources Canada has reached an agreement with Cooperativa Estanifera de Mineradores da Amazônia Legal (CEMAL) to set up a joint venture for tin tailings in Brazil.

The deal is related to the production of niobium, tin, and rare earths from the Massangana tailings in Rondônia, Brazil.

According to estimates, the tailings hold 30 million tonnes (Mt).

As per a study by the German Mineral Resources Agency and the Geological Survey of Brazil, the tin tailings could produce three types of products.

These include columbite concentrate containing 34.07% niobium, monazite concentrate containing 37.74% total rare earth oxide (TREO), and cassiterite concentrate containing 54.92% tin.

Auxico will earn 85% of the profits of the JV by making a $2m payment over the next year.

It will also be responsible for providing the necessary capital to engage in the production of the relevant concentrates.

Besides, the Canadian company will initiate a sampling programme of the tailings as well as prospect deposits that are identified from satellite imagery.

Currently, Auxico is undertaking a feasibility study to process 3Mtpa of tailings at a rate of 10,000tpd.

This project targets the annual production of 135,000t of monazite concentrate, 19,500t of cassiterite concentrate, and 45,000t of columbite concentrate.

It is planned to be conducted in three phases with the first phase scheduled to launch within the coming 12 months.

Under phase one, Auxico will carry out a pre-production study to substantiate current resources and present indications.

Phase two will involve the construction of an ultrasound-based processing facility, which will be equipped to eliminate radioactive elements contained in tailings.

The third phase would involve the shipment of 50,000t of rare earth concentrates produced by the processing plant to the US for final separation.

With a 100,000tpa capacity, the processing plant will produce rare earth concentrates that meet the international regulations for transportation.

Auxico said it has carried out scoping study for rare earth elements’ refining in Little Rock, Arkansas, US.

Molten Metals obtains exploration licence for Slovakian tin mine
The firm is planning to complete detailed mapping and bulk sampling on the project in the coming months.

September 23, 2022

Molten Metals has received an exploration licence through its wholly owned unit Slovak Antimony for the Bear Creek (Medvedi Potok) Tin mine at Hnilec in central Slovakia.

Located 25km south of Spišská Nová Ves and 35km north of Rožňava, the Medvedi Potok licence covers an area of 4.37km².

It is located in the same region as the company’s Tienesgrund Antimony-Gold project.

From 1971 to 1981, state-owned enterprise Geologický prieskum carried out exploration on the result of an Sn soil anomaly.

During the exploration period, Geologický prieskum’s team drilled 47 surface drill holes, excavated 36 trenches, 82 underground drill holes, two adits and a 10m-deep shaft.

Based on the exploration results, the project was estimated to hold reserves of 863kt of ore with 0.19% Sn grade.

Molten Metals said Sn-rich parts of the Medvedi Potok deposit are identified in veins. However, the veins’ tonnage accounts for just 8% of the reserves.

Molten Metals CEO Christopher Ecclestone said: “We identified this asset some months ago and made an application for it and are very pleased to now add it to our asset base in Slovakia.

“The processing circuit that the company recently acquired is also suitable for processing of cassiterite so our goal will be to alternate processing of Antimony and Tin at our facility.

“Our next task at Bear Creek will be reopening adits to access the historic resources outlined by state geologists in the Communist era.”

The firm is planning to complete detailed mapping and bulk sampling on the project in the coming months and advance towards production.
