Premier African Minerals completes Zimbabwe lithium plant, production imminent

Reuters | March 29, 2023

Premier African Minerals said on Wednesday it had finished building a lithium processing plant at its Zulu mine in Zimbabwe and expected to start production of spodumene concentrate later this week.

Spodumene is a lithium ore with high concentration of lithium, a key component in the production of batteries for electric vehicles.

Premier built the plant, which has capacity to produce nearly 50,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate annually, as part of a $35 million offtake deal signed last year with China’s CanMax Technologies (formerly Suzhou TA&A).

“We expect to produce spodumene, a lepidolite mica rich concentrate and a tantalum rich concentrate, late this week provided that final formal outstanding approvals from certain Zimbabwean authorities are received,” Premier CEO George Roach said in a statement.

Zimbabwe holds some of the world’s biggest hard-rock lithium deposits and has recently attracted about $700 million in investment from several Chinese firms, including CanMax, which also bought a 13.38% stake in Premier last year, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, Sinomine Resource Group and Chengxin Lithium Group.

Volt Lithium announces technical breakthrough with next-generation IES-300 proprietary direct lithium extraction process
This next-level IES-300 technology builds on the previously announced success of Volt’s original IES-200 DLE process, which achieved 93% lithium recoveries from oilfield brines

By NS Energy Staff Writer 07 Apr 2023

Allied Copper Corp. (TSX-V: CPR, OTCQB: CPRRF, FSE: S9G) (“Allied”), is pleased to announce that its lithium-focused division, Volt Lithium Corp (“Volt” or the “Company”) has achieved a technical breakthrough with its proprietary, next-generation IES-300 Direct Lithium Extraction (“DLE”) technology, which is expected to support continued step-change improvements in Volt’s process and project economics upon commercialization.

This next-level IES-300 technology builds on the previously announced success of Volt’s original IES-200 DLE process, which achieved 93% lithium recoveries from oilfield brines. With IES-300, the Company has continued to realize up to 93% lithium extraction, while also reducing the amount of re-agent required to treat oilfield brine as it enters the extraction process. The combination of continued high lithium extraction levels, a streamlined process and ongoing efficiency improvements has resulted in lower operating costs for Volt, which is expected to enhance project economics.

“Volt continues to execute our technically-focused strategy targeting profitable commercial production of lithium from oilfield brine, and be positioned as the first company in North America to achieve this milestone,” commented Alex Wylie, President of Allied and founder of Volt. “With results from our current pilot project anticipated by the end of Q2/23, we are excited to confirm that our next generation IES-300 technology can lower operating costs by reducing reagent inputs while maintaining high lithium extraction – all of which are critical to generate the robust economics Volt is targeting.”

Background on Volt’s IES-300 DLE Technology

Volt’s proprietary DLE technology features a two-stage process to extract lithium from oilfield brine. In Stage One, the oilfield brine is treated using proven equipment and established processes, and on a bench-scale basis earlier in 2023, Volt confirmed the ability to effectively remove up to 99% of contaminants in the preparation of clean brine for the DLE process. In Stage Two, Volt uses the Company’s proprietary IES-300 technology to extract the lithium from the brine and concentrate it into a lithium chloride solution that will ultimately be upgraded to lithium hydroxide, an essential raw material required for batteries, and in particular, electric vehicle batteries.

As the Company continues to progress through the pilot project during the second quarter of 2023, ongoing enhancements will be made to Volt’s DLE technology with the goal of further reducing costs and increasing lithium recoveries.

Volt Lithium Corp. is a lithium development and technology company aiming to be North America’s 1st commercial producer of lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonates from oilfield brine. We currently hold permits covering approximately 435,000 acres of land in the Rainbow Lake area of Alberta and have a reservoir that contains over 78 billion barrels of lithium infused brine. Volt is focused on a high-performance strategy that will leverage its proprietary direct lithium extraction technology, existing hydrocarbon experience and infrastructure to extract lithium deposits from established wells – reducing capital costs, lowering risk and delivering value to shareholders.

GM Leads $50 Million Funding Round in EnergyX to Unlock U.S.-Based Lithium Supply for Rapidly Scaling EV Production
Advanced refining technology has potential to fully optimize North American lithium recovery and make EV production more affordable and sustainable

By NS Energy Staff Writer 12 Apr 2023

Energy Exploration Technologies Inc. (“EnergyX”) and General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today announced that GM Ventures is leading a $50 million Series B financing round in EnergyX, and has entered into a strategic agreement to develop EnergyX’s lithium extraction and refinery technology. The collaboration is focused on unlocking the North American supply of lithium, a critical material for EV batteries, by using EnergyX’s innovative process to maximize efficiency while improving sustainability for GM’s rapidly scaling EV production.

EnergyX’s direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology portfolio can make lithium metal directly from brine and potentially in anode-ready form for EV batteries, which enables more cost-effective and sustainable lithium recovery to unlock a vast lithium supply chain in North America that may otherwise be unviable.

GM is investing in every stage of the battery supply chain in North America, from raw materials, to processing, to cell components and full battery cell production.

“The EnergyX team of scientists and engineers have worked relentlessly for five years developing cutting-edge DLE technology to solve the immense bottlenecks that have limited global lithium production and supply chain,” said Teague Egan, CEO, EnergyX. “This single bottleneck (a massive lithium shortage) is the biggest challenge to scaling EV production. We will unlock lithium supply in the U.S., a pivotal move in expanding the EV industry. There are many ways of gauging success, but few are more rewarding than the support of leaders like GM. We’re energized by GM’s investment and will keep a ‘Day 1’ attitude as we pursue our goal of making EnergyX the biggest lithium company in the world.”

“We are committed to securing EV critical minerals that are sustainable and cost competitive to maintain our leadership position among automakers,” said Jeff Morrison, GM vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. “The investment in EnergyX is a further proof point of GM’s leadership position. EnergyX is developing a novel direct lithium extraction process that’s not only cost competitive but also will reduce energy, land and water usage as compared to the current extraction and processing process for brine-based lithium. We are excited to be partnered with EnergyX on their efforts.”

In 2022, EnergyX became the first firm to design, build and commission an in-field pilot plant in the Lithium Triangle, which encompasses over 65% of the known global lithium reserves. The company’s LiTAS™ technology increases lithium recovery rates to over 90% from the current industry standard of 30-40% using ponds and hit 94% during their field trials. After a successful five-month pilot program proving the efficacy of the LiTAS™ lithium refinery process, EnergyX will scale those systems to more robust market demonstration plants located at five regional test beds in North and South America, followed by full-scale commercialization.

This new round of financing, funded by GM and other investors, helps solidify EnergyX as one of the world leaders in DLE technology and will also enable the company to broaden its research and development efforts for pure lithium metal anodes and its solid-state lithium metal battery program, SoLiS™. Amid building a 40,000-square-foot innovation and manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, to house its growing operation, EnergyX currently counts over 50 employees and will increase that number to 100 in the coming months.

Sigma Lithium to start production ‘within days’ after Brazilian approval

Reuters | April 10, 2023

Sigma Lithium Corp said on Monday it has received an operating license from Brazilian regulators to sell and export lithium and that its production of the electric vehicle battery metal should begin within days.

The approval for Sigma to operate its Grota do Cirilo hard rock lithium mine and processing equipment was confirmed by the State Secretariat of Environment and Development (SEMAD), the environmental regulator for the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The Vancouver-based company should be producing “within days” and shipping lithium “within weeks,” Ana Cabral-Gardner, Sigma’s chief executive, told Reuters.

Sigma’s US-listed shares closed on Monday up slightly following the news, after being down more than 4% earlier in the day.

Rumors have swirled in recent months that Tesla Inc or Chinese lithium rival Ganfeng Lithium Group Co could make a bid for Sigma.

Cabral-Gardner declined to comment when asked if Sigma is in any takeover discussions.

“I’m focused on what I can control, which is getting this company to production,” said Cabral-Gardner, who is also the managing partner of A10 Investimentos, which owns 45% of Sigma’s shares.

Production is expected to slowly ramp up in coming months and hit an annual production rate of 270,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate by July.

In 2021, Sigma agreed to supply at least 60,000 tonnes to LG Energy Solution Ltd starting this year. The remaining production is expected to be sold on the spot market to customers that likely will process the metal in China, and Sigma is currently “ascertaining which client would get the first shipment,” said Cabral-Gardner.

Because lithium demand is low in biofuel-focused Brazil, Cabral-Gardner said Sigma’s project is “geared to enable the energy transition in the northern hemisphere.”

Sigma has projected the mine will reach an annual free cash flow of $455 million for its first phase of production. Seven analysts recommend buying Sigma’s stock and believe it should be trading 69% higher than current levels, according to Refinitiv Eikon data.

Chile Plans To Nationalize Lithium Extraction Industry

By Michael Kern - Apr 21, 2023

The world's second-largest lithium producer, Chile, plans to nationalize the lithium extraction industry, Chilean President Gabriel Boric said this week, adding that future contracts would be given only to public-private partnerships with state control.

The announcement sent shares in the world's biggest lithium producers, Albemarle Corporation and SQM, tumbling on Thursday and early Friday.
Chile produces lithium from brine, similar to the production in Argentina and China. The world's top lithium supplier, Australia, produces lithium from hard rock mines.

The Chilean move to nationalize its huge lithium extraction industry, the crucial first step in the battery production supply chain, is aimed at protecting the environment and boosting economic growth, President Boric said in a televised address on Thursday.

"This is the best chance we have at transitioning to a sustainable and developed economy. We can't afford to waste it," Boric said, as carried by Reuters.

Boric will look to receive support from Chile's Congress for the nationalization in the second half of this year. It is not certain whether Congress will approve all proposals in the president's plans for the nationalization of the lithium industry.

Under the plan, Chile will not rescind existing contracts with private companies but will not issue new ones unless the license holder includes a state-controlled public-private entity.
The current contracts in Chile of lithium-producing giants SQM and Albemarle expire in 2030 and in 2043, respectively.

While there will not be contract terminations, Boric said the Chilean government hopes that the companies could be open to including the state as a participant before the contract expiration.

The world's top copper producer, Chile's state-owned Codelco, will be tasked to find the best way to create a state-owned lithium company, the Chilean president said.

In the first comments on the plans, analysts say that investment could shift to Australia as miners prefer political and regulatory stability.

Sigma Lithium has achieved the first production of battery grade sustainable lithium concentrate (green lithium) by commissioning the phase 1 Greentech plant at the Grota do Cirilo project in Brazil.

The Canada-based company stated that the production of green lithium concludes the commissioning process and transitions it from developer to producer.

Sigma Lithium said that the completed commissioning of the dense medium separation (DMS) circuit, which is the second module of the Greentech plant, is the final step in the construction of the Grota do Cirilo project phase 1.

The technical team led by Sigma Lithium chief operating officer Brian Talbot will now focus on scaling up throughput to full production capacity, which is expected to be achieved by July 2023.

An inaugural shipment of nearly 15,000 tonnes of green lithium is likely to take place in May 2023.

Sigma Lithium said that it recently secured an environmental operating license to sell all green lithium product from current and future production, including any stockpiled product.

The company is also continuing the detailed engineering work on the phase 2 and 3 Greentech plant expansion with an aim to increase production of green lithium by three folds from 270,000tpa to 766,000tpa. This is subject to the feasibility study that is being carried out presently.

Sigma Lithium CEO and co-chairperson Ana Cabral-Gardner said: “Sigma Lithium was created almost a decade ago and set out to prove that lithium extraction could be done in a way that is environmentally and socially responsible.

“Reaching this milestone from developer to producer is an incredible achievement and a testament to the many years of hard work of the entire Sigma team. We are thrilled to deliver on schedule for our supporters and partners.”

Located in the state of Minas Gerais, the Grota do Cirilo project is claimed to be one of the largest as well as highest-grade hard rock lithium deposits in the world.

India’s NMDC explores lithium reserves for mining in Australia

Reuters | April 19, 2023

Indian iron ore miner NMDC Ltd is exploring lithium reserves, 124.3 miles (about 200 km) off Perth, Australia, company officials said on Wednesday.

“We are in the process of exploring (lithium) in Australia…,” D K Mohanty, director production NMDC told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference in Mumbai.

NMDC is the majority owner of a mine located in Mt Bevan in Australia, a second NMDC official, who is not authorised to speak to media, said, adding that the company hopes to start mining within two years.

India has been exploring ways to secure supplies of lithium, an important raw material used to make electric vehicle batteries, from some of the world’s top producers by acquiring overseas mines, as part of the South Asian nation’s efforts to push for making greener vehicles.

Lithium exploration in Canada – in charts

Alisha Hiyate | April 20, 2023

With last year’s record lithium prices spurring a boom in exploration for the energy metal that has persisted even as prices have retreated, The Northern Miner was curious where in Canada that activity is being channelled and who’s behind it.

To get a wide view on exploration activity, we turned to our sister company Mining Intelligence.

According to Mining Intelligence data, there are 409 active lithium projects in Canada, including very early stage properties where little work has been done (145 or 35% of the total).

Advanced projects with a significant amount of drilling, a resource, or any stage of economic study, construction or production) account for 106 or just over one quarter (25.9%) of the total.

Here’s a look at all projects by stage.

Image

Where are the projects?
Quebec, which has had some historical production of lithium, by far hosts the greatest number of active lithium projects. Sayona Mining (ASX: SYA) and 25% partner Piedmont Lithium (NASDAQ: PLL; ASX: PLL) just restarted commercial spodumene production at the North American Lithium (NAL) project in Quebec last month.

The mining and exploration friendly province accounts for almost half of lithium exploration projects in the Mining Intelligence database. By comparison, Ontario, which has the second highest count, has just over a quarter of the total number of projects.

The “other” category in the pie chart below includes 10 projects in the Northwest Territories, two in Nunavut, three in B.C., and six each in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, with New Brunswick counting just one.

................
Who owns the projects?

The vast majority of Canada’s lithium projects — 86% — are held by Canadian-based companies. Australians hold close to 13%. Given Australia’s status as the world’s top lithium producer as well as its strength in mineral exploration, it’s no surprise to see that when we look at a subset of more advanced projects (37 in total), the share held by Canadian companies falls to 58% while the share held by Australian companies rises to 36%.

Nouveau prospect de Lithium aux USA :
Tearlach Resources confirms Gabriel lithium discovery in Nevada

Henry Lazenby | April 18, 2023

The results from the first five out of 11 drill holes at the Gabriel lithium project in Nevada show grades higher than 1,000 ppm lithium, held in thick mineralized zones. Credit: Tearlach Resources.

The first rush assay results from Tearlach Resources’ (TSXV: TEA) initial drilling program on the Gabriel lithium project in Nevada have confirmed a discovery last year by Blackrock Silver (TSXV: BRC) at grades up to 85% higher than first thought.

Tearlach’s core drill holes delivered grades ranging from 40-85% higher than the corresponding original reverse circulation intercepts Blackrock drilled, which expanded the mineralized zone at the project.

The results from the first five out of 11 drill holes show grades higher than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) lithium, held in thick mineralized zones, Tearlach said in a news release Tuesday.

The company reported the highest primary intercept of 802 ppm over 18.6 metres in hole 018. The highest grade for an included intercept is 1,196 ppm over 10.1 metres, including 1,460 ppm lithium in hole 012.

Gabriel is in west central Nevada along the emerging Tonopah lithium belt, abutting American Lithium’s (TSXV: LI; US-OTC: LIACF) TLC discovery of April 2019.

American Lithium’s TLC and American Battery Technology’s (US-OTCQB: ABML) Tonopah Flats projects, also on the Tonopah lithium belt, have emerged as globally significant deposits.
