E3 Metals, Livent team up on Alberta lithium development project

Jackson Chen | September 18, 2019

Alberta-based lithium miner E3 Metals (TSXV: ETMC) announced on Wednesday that it has entered into a collaboration with Livent Corporation (NYSE: LTHM), whereby the two companies will seek to advance the development of E3 Metals’ proprietary direct lithium extraction process.

E3 Metals is close to commercializing a low-cost method of recovering lithium from the petro-brine resources in the Leduc Formation of Alberta. Its extraction process is better than existing methods, according to the company, because it concentrates and purifies the petro-brine feedstock in a single step.

Under the agreement, Livent will contribute its technical expertise and invest up to $5.5 million in the joint development project. In exchange, upon completion of the project and satisfaction of the full $5.5 million in funding, Livent may convert its investment into a 19.9% ownership stake in E3 Metals and appoint one member to its board of directors.

“Livent has been a pioneer in the lithium industry for over 60 years. Collaborating with E3 Metals provides an opportunity to build on our rich heritage of innovation and to bring exciting new possibilities to our customers around the world,” Paul Graves, President & CEO of Livent, commented.

E3 Metals currently holds the sixth largest lithium resource in the world. Its Leduc Reservoir hosts lithium enriched brine with 6.7 million tonnes LCE inferred mineral resource delineated to date.

Tianqi Lithium in supply deal with Sweden’s Northvolt

Reuters | September 24, 2019

Kwinana, dubbed heart of Western Australia’s Lithium Valley, is home to Tianqi’s lithium hydroxide processing plant.

China’s Tianqi Lithium Corp , one of the world’s biggest lithium producers, said on Tuesday that its Australian unit had signed a long-term supply agreement with Swedish battery maker Northvolt.

Tianqi Lithium Kwinana, which recently launched a processing plant in Western Australia, will supply lithium hydroxide, a chemical used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, to Northvolt Ett from 2020-25, Tianqi said in a filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

Northvolt Ett is the name of Northvolt’s planned lithium-ion battery plant in northern Sweden. What will be Europe’s largest such plant is due to begin production in 2021 and counts German automakers Volkswagen and BMW among its investors.

The filing gave no absolute tonnage figure for the deal but said that the volume supplied each year would be no lower than 6-10% of Tianqi Kwinana’s annual capacity.

The deal marks the second major customer win for Tianqi in a little more than a month. The company announced on Aug. 22 that it had signed up South Korea’s LG Chem on a three-year deal covering 2020-22 for no less than 15% of Kwinana’s annual capacity.

Tianqi Lithium Kwinana started production of lithium hydroxide this month, with its first phase output to ramp up to the full 24,000 tonnes a year over the next 12-18 months.

Capacity will double to 48,000 tonnes with a second stage, though Tianqi has put that on hold until the ramp-up of the first phase is complete because lithium prices remain depressed.

Amid a wave of new supply and adjustments to EV subsidies in China, lithium hydroxide prices <AM-LIOH0002-LHM>, as assessed by industry information provider Asian Metal, have fallen by 36.8% this year to 67,000 yuan ($9,428.25) a tonne.

Lithium Americas trims production target, budget for Nevada mine

Thacker Pass

Lithium Americas Corp has cut its budget and production target for a proposed Nevada mine amidst growing concern of a global supply glut for the white metal, a key ingredient used to make electric vehicle batteries.

The announcement on Wednesday from the British Columbia-based company comes as lithium prices plummet in China, the world’s largest consumer of the metal, due to fears of supply exceeding demand, even as Rivian Automotive LLC, Volkswagen AG and other automakers launch ambitious EV plans.

Lithium Americas said it now plans to spend $400 million on the first phase of its Thacker Pass project with output of 20,000 tonnes of lithium annually. The company had previously forecast a $581 million budget for the first phase with annual output of 30,000 tonnes. The mine is expected to open by 2023.

“People are really preoccupied with pricing, but they’re just looking at spot pricing in China, which is only part of the market,” Chief Executive Jon Evans told Reuters. “The demand picture remains strong.”

A wave of new supply and Chinese EV subsidy cuts have sent lithium hydroxide prices, as assessed by industry information provider Asian Metal, plummeting 36.8% this year to 67,000 yuan ($9,418.31) a tonne.

Still, there is no global pricing standard, much to the chagrin of miners who see China as only part of the global demand picture. Japan’s Panasonic Corp, for instance, is a large lithium consumer. The London Metal Exchange plans to launch a lithium pricing contract in the near future.

Lithium Americas also said on Wednesday it has hired Nacco Industries Inc to build and run Thacker Pass, where lithium is found in clay rock. The company plans to use a proprietary acid leaching process to extract the lithium.

Nacco will fund $50 million for mining equipment, funds that will be repaid by Lithium Americas once the mine is operational.

Lithium Americas, which is developing a brine lithium project in Argentina with China’s Ganfeng Lithium Co, has not yet secured financing for Thacker Pass, a process expected to begin next year.

Lithium Americas plans to host U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a member of the Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee, this Friday at the Nevada mine site.

The Democratic senator voiced her support last week for pending federal legislation to streamline permitting for new mines.

“If we don’t start embracing this new technology, we are going to be left behind,” Cortez Masto said.

Frontier Lithium drills 231 m of 1.61% Li2O at Spark pegmatite

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | September 25, 2019

Frontier Lithium of Val Caron, Ontario, has drilled four holes totaling 1,159 metres during phase two of its campaign at the Spark pegmatite, part of the PAK project 175 km north of Red Lake, Ontario.

Assays from the first two holes were reported this week. Hole DDH PL-042-19 intersected 231 metres of pegmatite averaging 1.61% lithium oxide, including 25.0 metres of 2.75%. Hole DDH PL-043-19 cut three narrow dykes with grades from 1.0% to 1.5% lithium oxide.

Frontier says the deposit is consistent in composition and grade across the width of the pegmatite down to at least 200 metres below surface. Indications are that the Spark pegmatite is vertically emplaced and open to the west with multiple dykes extending to the east.

The PAK project has both pit and underground reserves totaling 5.7 million tonnes grading 2.0% lithium oxide.

Xuxa Lithium Project

Xuxa lithium project is an open-pit lithium deposit located in the Grota Do Cirilo Project in Vale do Jequitinhonha, Brazil. Sigma Lithium is the project owner and developer.

Sigma secured environmental licenses for the construction and installation of its lithium commercial production plant in June 2019.

Feasibility study (PFS) for the Xuxa was completed in October 2019. It estimates an investment of £80.1m ($98.5m) to develop.

The Xuxa deposit is expected to produce 220,000 tons of high-quality battery-grade 6% lithium oxide concentrate a year, through its anticipated mine life of 9.2 years. The construction on the project is expected to be started in March 2020, with operations anticipated to begin in 2021.

PROJECT GALLERY
Xuxa lithium project location, geology, and mineralisation
The Xuxa deposit is situated in Vale do Jequitinhonha in the northeastern state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is one of the six priority lithium deposits sites identified at Grota Do Cirilo. The mineralisation at Xuxa deposit comprises pegmatite that remains open on surface to the south and at depth.

The Xuxa pegmatite is approximately 1.7km-long and beween 14km and 16km in width. It dips roughly 50° west, striking north-west to south-east. The pegmatite is made up of large crystals of spodumene, which are clearly visible in the drill cores.

Ore reserves at Xuxa lithium project
The proven and probable ore reserves at Xuxa lithium deposit are estimated to be 13.79 million tonnes (Mt), grading 1.46% lithium oxide (Li2O).

The deposit is expected to contain measured and indicated resources of 17.41Mt and inferred resources of 3.8Mt.

Mining at Xuxa lithium project
Conventional open-pit mining method will be implemented at Xuxa lithium deposit, using a combination of hydraulic excavators and haul trucks. The mine plan involves the construction of two separate pits, in addition to four waste piles for storing the waste rock from open pits and residue from the Xuxa Plant.

The excavated material will be hauled to the run-of-mine (ROM) pad or the waste piles by trucks.

Controlled blasting will be used to maximise mine recovery and reduce dilution, with 6m benches used to blast fresh rock for ore domain and 12m benches for waste domain.

Ore processing at Xuxa lithium project
Ore will be processed at the 1.5Mtpa Xuxa processing plant, located 1.7km and 2.3km respectively from north and south Xuxa mine open-pits. The plant capacity is planned to be expanded to 3Mtpa by including an in-house crushing circuit.

The ROM ore will pass through a three-stage conventional crushing and screening circuit, followed by dense moderate separation (DMS) screening and mica removal. Coarse and fines will be processed in separate two-stage DMS circuits followed by a single-stage DMS circuit for ultra-fines fraction.

The resultant hypofines fraction with the waste will be thickened, filtered, and dry stacked. It will then undergo optical sorting and/or magnetic separation on the concentrate.

Off-take agreements
Sigma Lithium signed a heads of agreement, in November 2018, with Mistui for the off-take of the lithum produced at the Xuxa lithium project. The company paid £24m ($30m) for supplying 55,000t of battery-grade lithium concnetrate a year, for six years.

Infrastructure
The project will be powered by hydroelectricity, while approximately 90% of water used in the processing will be recycled.

Contractors involved
Sigma Lithium prepared the project feasibility study with support from consultants including SGS Geological Services, MCB (Dewsick Brazil), Primero Group, SGS Lakefield Canada, Primero Group Americas, and Worley Parsons.

Cornish Lithium gets $1.7 million funding boost for UK project

Cecilia Jamasmie | September 30, 2019

Cornish Lithium, a start-up hoping to lead the development of an industry for the battery metal in the UK, has raised £1.4 million (about $1.7m) through a crowdfunding campaign launched in July, which will allow it to expand its ongoing drilling work in the ancient mining region of Cornwall, south-west England.

The company, the first British miner to raise money for a project through an Internet-based platform, said the backers included Norwegian shipping magnate Peter Smedvig, senior mining executives and about 1,200 individual investors, mostly locals.

Cornish Lithium owns exploration rights across more than 300 square miles of Cornwall, where it’s using data collected by planes, drones and satellites to map out mineral-rich geological structures in the area.

The company will conduct its first drill test in October, which consist of perforating geothermal faults, pumping out water and then filtering the output to extract lithium, a key ingredient in the batteries that power electric cars and high-tech devices.

In the upcoming exploration phase, Cornish Lithium has decided to also begin exploring for lithium in hard rock form, having discovered evidence that it was mined on the surface during World War II.

Rio Tinto kicks off $10m pilot hoping to become the largest lithium miner in US

Cecilia Jamasmie | October 22, 2019

Image
The 90-year-old Boron mine has thrived on production of borates, but may soon become a major source of lithium as well. (Image courtesy of Rio Tinto.)

Rio Tinto, (ASX, LON:RIO), the world’s No. 2 miner, may become the largest lithium producer in the United States if a pilot project that is kicking off at its Boron mine, in the California desert, proves to be successful enough to be expanded.

The company will be studying ways to extract lithium from tailings at the 90-year-old open pit mine, which produces borates — a group of minerals used to make insulation fibreglass wind turbines and consumer goods such as soaps and cosmetics.

Rio’s discovery of lithium at Boron was a fluke. The miner was actually testing Boron’s tailings to see whether the presence of gold was significant and found instead traces of lithium at a concentration higher than domestic projects under development.

“If trials continue to prove successful, this has the potential to become America’s largest domestic producer of battery-grade lithium — all without the need for further mining,” Rio Tinto’s energy and minerals chief executive, Bold Baatar, said Tuesday in an emailed statement.

The company has earmarked a $10 million investment to build a pilot plant that will be able to produce 10 tonnes a year of lithium-carbonate, needed in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and high tech devices. If that works, Rio Tinto would consider investing in a $50 million industrial-scale plant to generate 5,000 tonnes a year — enough for around 15,000 Tesla Model S batteries.

The projected production would be roughly the same as the capacity of Albemarle ’s Silver Peak mine in Nevada, which is currently the only lithium-carbonate producing asset in the country, according to the US Geological Survey.

Until now, the global miner’s incursion in the lithium market has been mostly limited to its 100%-owned lithium and borates mineral project in Jadar, Serbia. While still in the early stages of development, the company plans to seek board approval next year, with first production expected in 2024 — the fastest possible development schedule for the operation.

Bacanora and Ganfeng ink Sonora lithium project investment

Amanda Stutt | October 14, 2019

Bacanora Lithium (AIM: BCN) announced on Monday that the previously announced strategic investment by Chinese firm Ganfeng Lithium has been completed, with all required approvals in.

The deal has helped to boost Bacanora’s share price more than 50% this year and it rose to its highest level in a month following Monday’s announcement of the deal’s completion, Reuters reported.

London-listed Bacanora has now received the £21,963,740 from Ganfeng in exchange for a 29.99% equity interest and a 22.5% joint venture (JV) investment directly in the Sonora lithium project

Bacanora’s Sonora lithium project in Mexico is one of many that have fallen behind schedule as production of the battery mineral tests traditional mining skills and the market is volatile because of uncertainty about supply and demand.

With a Measured plus Indicated Mineral Resource estimate of over 5 million tonnes (‘Mt’) (comprising 1.9 Mt of Measured Resources and 3.1Mt of Indicated Resources) of lithium carbonate equivalent and an additional Inferred Mineral Resource of 3.7 Mt of LCE, Sonora is regarded as one of the world’s larger known clay lithium deposits.

Ganfeng plans to proactively advance the development of Bacanora’s Sonora lithium project during the second half of 2019.

Albemarle and Mineral Resources Limited (MRL) have closed a $1.3bn deal to create the MARBL Lithium Joint Venture to operate the Wodgina lithium mine in Australia.

The 60:40 lithium joint venture between the US specialty chemicals company Albemarle and Australian mining services company Mineral Resources has been finalised following approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) in Australia.

The two parties entered into the joint venture deal in December 2018, which was amended subsequently in July 2019.

The amendment was made to enable Albemarle acquire a stake of 60% instead of the originally agreed 50% in the Wodgina lithium mine. In line with that, the consideration had been increased from $1.15bn to $1.3bn.

The total consideration comprises a cash payment of $820m from Albemarle plus transfer of a 40% interest to MRL in two 25 ktpa lithium hydroxide conversion trains being built by the former at Kemerton in Western Australia.

The MARBL Lithium Joint Venture will manage operations of both the Wodgina lithium mine and the Kemerton conversion trains. As per the terms of the deal, Albemarle will commercialise 100% of the output from the Wodgina lithium mine and the Kemerton lithium hydroxide conversion trains.

The Wodgina lithium mine has an estimated 30 years of mine life
MARBL will look to develop an integrated lithium hydroxide operation at the Wodgina lithium mine to extract spodumene concentrate and lithium hydroxide. The hard rock lithium mine is projected to have a mine life of more than 30 years.

According to Albemarle, the 50ktpa lithium hydroxide conversion capacity at Kemerton will have stage-wise commissioning, which will begin from the first half of 2021.

Pastos Grandes Lithium Project

Project Type : Brine solution lithium project

Location : Salta Province, Argentina

Owner / Developer : Millennial Lithium

Reserves : 177,000t

Estimated Investment : £362m ($448m)

Mine Life : 40 years

Start of Construction : 2020

Start of Production : August 2022

Pastos Grandes lithium project, owned by Millennial Lithium, is located in Salta Province, Argentina.

Feasibility study (FS) for the Pastos Grandes project was completed in July 2019, which estimated a capital cost of £362m ($448m).

The project is expected to produce 24,000 tons (t) of battery-grade lithium carbonate a year, through its anticipated mine life of approximately -40 years. Millennial proposes to start construction in January 2020 and produce first lithium carbonate from the mine in August 2022.

Pastos Grandes lithium project location, geology, and mineralisation

The Pastos Grandes lithium project is located approximately 230km from Salta City and 56km from San Antonio de Los Cobres, Argentina.

The project extends over 8,664ha and hosts Precambrian meta-sedimentary units comprising slates and phyllite rocks of the Puncoviscana Formation and Lower Ordovician turbidites.

The relatively low-magnesium brine rich in lithium-potassium makes up the mineralisation at Pastos Grandes project. The lithium concentrations at the surface at the salar are of 100-300mg/l range and increase with depth with 10m holes reporting 400mg/l concentrations. The salar has highest values along the western margin and the values increase in the south-central basins at depth.

Pastos Grandes lithium project reserves

The proven and probable ore reserves of the Pastos Grandes lithium project are 177,000t of lithium, at an average Li concentration of 439mg/l. Contained lithium carbonate-equivalent (LCE) of the project is estimated to be 943,000t.

Mining and brine processing at Pastos Grandes lithium project

The lithium-rich brine will be extracted from the production wells using submersible pumps and delivered to the evaporation ponds. It will be concentrated through solar evaporation and chemical saturation.

The chemical saturation results in the precipitation of salts, mainly halite and sylvinite, with smaller volumes of gypsum, carnallite, and schoenite. The precipitated salts will be either periodically removed or harvested from the ponds and stored.

The process will also involve a liming stage, which will reduce the magnesium content in the brine and precipitates it as magnesium hydroxide.

The concentrated lithium brine from the evaporation ponds will be forwarded to the reservoir ponds before being conveyed to the lithium carbonate plant. The plant employs solvent extraction carbonation and filtration processes to remove impurities such as boron, calcium, and magnesium.

The lithium concentrated brine will then undergo a secondary carbonation stage, where lithium carbonate will be precipitated through the addition of soda ash. The precipitated lithium carbonate will be then redigested in a CO2 solution, dried, followed by size reduction, and packaged for delivery to customers.
