Vulcan Energy signs lithium hydroxide supply deal with LG Chem unit

Reuters | July 18, 2021

Australia-listed lithium miner Vulcan Energy Resources said on Monday it had signed a long-term deal to sell lithium hydroxide from its German project to the battery unit of South Korea’s LG Chem .

Vulcan, which will extract lithium from geothermal brine via its 1.7 billion euro ($1.4 billion) project, said the five-year deal could be renewed for five more years. The contract is expected to be finalised by the end of November.

Vulcan’s process for extracting lithium, a key ingredient for electric vehicle batteries, will produce renewable power and emit no carbon dioxide, unlike Australia’s hard rock lithium mining. The water will also be recycled, unlike the evaporation technique used in arid areas of South America.

The company, which plans to operate in Germany’s Upper Rhine Rift, said LG Chem’s LG Energy Solution (LGES) would buy 5,000 tonnes of battery grade lithium hydroxide in 2024, the first year of production, rising to 10,000 tonnes a year. LGES will use the lithium to make battery cathodes.

Vulcan’s German subsidiary was preparing for a potential listing in Frankfurt this year, the unit’s head Horst Kreuter said. “We are sensing a lot of interest from investors in Europe,” he told Reuters.

The LGES deal is the first for Vulcan’s German project, accounting for a quarter of its output from its five planned plants, which are expected to be operating from 2026.

Vulcan previously said it was open to selling 80% of its lithium via long-term deals with the rest sold on the spot market, but Managing Director Francis Wedin said Vulcan’s German operations could consider selling more via long-term contracts.

“We could go to 100% potentially of future supply we will just have to take it as it comes,” he told Reuters, adding that the firm was “overwhelmed with demand” from equipment makers.

Vulcan said it was in talks with several major customers in the European battery and electric vehicle markets, without offering details.

Vulcan signed a memorandum of understanding this month with French-Italian automaker Stellantis to supply lithium, sources said. Daimler previously said it was in talks about potential purchases from Vulcan.

Vulcan plans to expand in Germany’s Rhine Valley, which could include acquisitions, Wedin said.

Kreuter said the price for Vulcan’s lithium produced in Germany would be lower than the cost of lithium carbonate from Chile or Argentina.

“This is due to the additional revenue from the sale of renewable energy won from the thermal plants,” he said.

Lawsuit Threatens U.S. Lithium Mining Project

By Charles Kennedy - Jul 29, 2021

Lawsuits are now threatening made-in-America lithium, the mineral that analysts believe is one of the key metals bound to enable the energy transition.

U.S. battery manufacturers and the U.S. Administration, past and present, want to reduce the influence of China in the global supply chain of critical energy minerals such as lithium. In light of this, several projects have been proposed on American soil.

But environmentalists and Native Americans are suing to stop one of those projects, Lithium Americas' Thacker Pass Project in Humboldt County in northern Nevada.

In January, in the last days of the Trump Administration, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued the Record of Decision for the Thacker Pass lithium project, following the completion of the National Environmental Policy Act process. Thacker Pass is 100-percent owned by Lithium Nevada Corp., a U.S. corporation and wholly owned subsidiary of Lithium Americas.

Environmental groups filed in May for a preliminary injunction, asking the federal district court in Reno to prohibit the construction of the Thacker Pass lithium mine because of the fast-tracked approval of the project they say would endanger wildlife in the area.

Related: Goldman Sachs Predicts Drastic Rise In Power Demand Due To EVs

The four groups—Western Watersheds Project, Great Basin Resource Watch, Basin and Range Watch, and Wildlands Defense—further argued in May that "BLM failed in its duty to protect public resources by allowing a mine that will be a source of groundwater pollution for at least 300 years and not requiring long-term financial assurances."

On Wednesday, chief judge Miranda Du of the U.S. District Court for Nevada allowed Native American communities to join the lawsuit filed by the environmental groups. The tribes say that the lithium mining project would damage their sacred religious and historical grounds.

Last week, the same judge denied the environmentalists' request for an injunction to stop preliminary mine work at the Thacker Pass lithium project.

"We are disappointed in the court's ruling allowing the company to dig up and remove cultural and historical artifacts, but mine construction is not slated to begin until next year and the court stated that it would rule on the merits of the case by then. Due to the various legal errors in the BLM's review and approval of the mine, we look forward to briefing on the merits of the case in the coming months," said Western Watersheds Project attorney Talasi Brooks.

Rio Tinto to invest $2.4bn to develop Jadar lithium project
First saleable production from the Serbian mine is expected to be achieved in 2026

By NS Energy Staff Writer 28 Jul 2021

Rio Tinto has decided to invest $2.4bn to develop the Jadar lithium-borates project in Serbia to serve the European electric vehicles market.

The project is expected to to produce nearly 58,000 tonnes of battery grade lithium carbonate.

Touted to be the largest greenfield lithium project in the world, Jadar is subject to relevant approvals, permits, and licenses among others.

Through the underground mining project, Rio Tinto aims to become the largest supplier of lithium in Europe for at least the next 15 years. The company expects to achieve the first saleable production from the project in 2026.

Apart from lithium carbonate, the Jadar project will yield borates, which are used in wind turbines and solar panels.

Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm said: “Serbia and Rio Tinto will be well-positioned to capture the opportunity offered by rising demand for lithium, driven by the global energy transition and the project will strengthen our offering, particularly to the European market. It could supply enough lithium to power over one million electric vehicles per year.

“The Jadar deposit and its unique mineral, Jadarite, discovered by Rio Tinto geologists in 2004 contains high-grade mineralisation of boron and lithium, supporting a long-life operation in the first quartile of the cost curve for both products.”

After ramping up to full production in 2029, the underground mine will produce 160,000 tonnes of boric acid (B2O3 units) and 255,000 tonnes of sodium along with 58,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate.

Rio Tinto is targeting to produce 2.3 million tonnes of lithium carbonate from the Jadar project over its estimated 40-year life of mine.

The next step for the mining giant is for pursuing an exploitation license and regulatory approvals, which include approval of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies.

The company is targeting to begin construction next year.

Rio Tinto’s investment decision on the Jadar lithium-borates project follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with InoBat, a European battery technology and manufacturing company, in May 2021.

As per the MoU, the companies agreed to expedite the setting up of a lithium battery manufacturing and recycling value chain in Serbia.

Du Lithium en Russie :
Atomredmedzoloto Plans to Mine Lithium in Kola Peninsula
Arctic Today reported that Russia’s state nuclear power company Rosatom’s mining subsidiary Atomredmedzoloto plans to start

Published on : 05 Aug, 2021

Arctic Today reported that Russia’s state nuclear power company Rosatom’s mining subsidiary Atomredmedzoloto plans to start producing lithium compounds on both the Kola Peninsula and in Irkutsk region in Siberia. nvestments in the Russian lithium mining projects are estimated at over 50 billion rubles (EUR 570 million). ARMZ does not identify where on the Kola Peninsula such lithium mining is planned, but a well-known geological area with huge amounts of rich spodumene pegmatites of lithium is the Kolmozero deposit, halfway between the Khibiny mountain plateau and the coast to the Barents Sea.

This deposit, bordering the large Murmansk Tundra state national park, is centrally located in Europe’s largest wilderness area with no infrastructure such as roads or other transport means.

Mining in remote locations is nothing new for Rosatom’s subsidiary. At Novaya Zemlya in the Russian Arctic, digging for zinc at the Pavlovsky mine is already in full swing, as previously reported by the Barents Observer.

Rio Tinto readies to ship trial lithium plant to Serbia

Reuters | August 1, 2021

Rio Tinto Ltd is set to ship a pilot lithium processing plant to Serbia from Melbourne in the coming weeks, the culmination of a decade’s research to catapult the world’s largest iron ore miner into battery minerals.

The work, undertaken at a science hub on the outskirts of Melbourne, has found a way to economically extract lithium from jadarite, a mineral that has only been found in a Serbian valley.

Rio last week hit the go button on the $2.4-billion project that will diversify the producer of iron ore, copper, aluminium and specialty minerals into a top ten lithium producer, just as demand from electric vehicle makers booms.

“It’s not a huge mine but from a lithium perspective, it’s going to be the largest producer in Europe for at least ten years and bring lithium to the market at scale,” Sinead Kaufman, Chief Executive of Rio’s Minerals division, told reporters.

Four 40-foot shipping containers of equipment will leave in the coming weeks before a nine-week sail and onward river journey.

Construction is expected to begin early next year, subject to environmental approvals, with the first production from 2026.

Canada gives environment okay for Rose lithium-tantalum project

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | August 12, 2021

The Rose lithium-tantalum project belonging to Critical Elements Lithium (TSXV: CRE) has received environmental approval from the Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

The project, located in the James Bay region of Quebec, was reviewed by a federal joint assessment committee and the government of the Cree Nation. The committee concluded that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects when mitigation measures are taken into account. The decision includes 221 legally binding conditions which must be met as work goes forward.

Rose is a high purity spodumene project, which will produce a 6% technical grade concentrate initially for the glass and ceramics industries. Later the spodumene will be converted to battery grade lithium hydroxide for the electric vehicle and other markets. A lithium recovery rate of 87% is anticipated.

According to the feasibility study produced in 2017, the Rose mine and mill has an after-tax net present value (8% discount) of C$726 million, an after-tax internal rate of return of 34.9%, and a payback period of 2.8 years. An after-tax cash flow of C$1.6 billion is anticipated.

The open pit will be a truck and shovel operation providing 4,900 tonnes/day ore to the mill for 17 years. The initial capital cost is estimated to be C$341 million.

The deposit has 30 million indicated pit restrained tonnes grading 0.93% lithium oxide and 2 million pit constrained inferred tonnes grading 0.79% lithium oxide. A smaller portion of underground resources has also been outlined.

Critical Elements expects to begin construction this year on the mine and mill so that the first spodumene concentrate will be produced in 2023.

Clayton Valley lithium project in Nevada gets federal approval for operations

MINING.com Editor | August 17, 2021

Pure Energy Minerals (TSXV: PE) announced Tuesday that Schlumberger New Energy (SNE) has received approval from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for a Plan of Operations covering the construction and operation of a pilot plant at Pure Energy’s Clayton Valley, Nevada, lithium brine project.

Schlumberger, Pure Energy’s partner and operator of the Clayton Valley project, has also received permit approval for the associated reclamation plan from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Mining Regulation and Reclamation.

The Vancouver-based miner, together with SNE, is exploring and developing the 9,450-hectare Clayton Valley project, the largest mineral land holdings in the area, which adjoins and surrounds on three sides the Silver Peak lithium brine mine operated by Albemarle.

Construction and operation of the pilot plant are planned at the Clayton Valley property, located 40 miles southwest of Tonopah in Esmeralda County, Nevada, as approved by the BLM and Nevada authorities.

In March, SNE announced its plans to develop a lithium extraction pilot plant at the Clayton Valley Project through its wholly-owned subsidiary, NeoLith Energy.

The BLM approved the Plan of Operations after completion of the required engineering design, environmental studies and public comment period. Additional permit applications are in process with NDEP.

“Pure Energy is excited that this important step towards development of the Clayton Valley Project has been achieved,” Pure Energy director Mary Little said in a media statement. “We look forward to advancing the Clayton Valley Project with Schlumberger New Energy.”

SNE is developing a lithium extraction pilot plant for the project, which uses a differentiated direct lithium extraction process to enable the production of high-purity, battery-grade lithium material while reducing the production time from over a year to weeks.

Pure Energy Minerals stock surged over 11% in Toronto on the news. The company has a $43 million market capitalization.
