Lithium Mega-Merger Creates New $3 Billion Company

By MINING.com - Apr 19, 2021

Australian lithium miners Galaxy Resources (ASX:GXY) and Orocobre (ASX:ORE) have agreed to a merger that would create a $3.1 billion (A$4bn) company, set to be the world’s fifth largest producer of lithium chemicals, the refined form of the raw material used to make electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

The business combination, the biggest mining sector deal of the year so far, will unlock significant synergies for the new company, the miners said.

“The logic of this merger is compelling,” Orocobre chairman, Robert Hubbard, who becomes deputy chairman of the yet to be formally named new company, said in the media statement.

Orocobre produces lithium carbonate at its Olaroz operation in Argentina, while Galaxy has a mine in Australia and growth projects in Canada and South America.

The deal values Galaxy at about A$3.53 a share, a 2.2% discount to Friday’s close, and has the backing of both company boards.

Orocobre will offer 0.569 of its shares for every Galaxy share and will own 54.2% of the merged company, with Galaxy holding 45.8%. Orocobre was advised on the deal by UBS, while Galaxy’s adviser was Standard Chartered.

“The merger consolidates the combined group’s position in Argentina and will give us significant operational, technical and financial flexibility to deliver the full value of our combined portfolio,” Martín Pérez de Solay, current chief executive officer and managing director of Orocobre, said.

“From Galaxy’s perspective, we were looking for a partner which had deep in-country Argentinian experience and we’ve got that in Orocobre,” said Simon Hay, Galaxy’s CEO, who will take on the role of president of international business at the new company.

The only lithium chemical firms that would have a bigger market capitalization than the merged Orocobre and Galaxy are China’s Ganfeng Lithium, Albemarle, SQM and Tianqi. The next biggest companies are Australia’s Pilbara Minerals, US firm Livent and Canada’s Lithium Americas.

Germany plans to mine boiling-hot lithium deep beneath the Rhine River

Reuters 2 may 2021

A With an eye on rapidly rising demand from Germany's electric vehicle industry, power and mining companies alike are striving to bring to the surface lithium trapped in underground springs of boiling hot water thousands of meters below the Rhine river.

Straddling an area 300 kilometers (186.41 miles) long and up to 40 kilometers wide, the Upper-Rhine Valley in the Black Forest area of southwestern Germany holds enough lithium for more than 400 million electric cars, geologists have estimated, making it one of the world's biggest deposits.

It could reduce the reliance of the German car industry, also located in southwestern Germany, on imported lithium and early-stage talks are under way with the auto manufacturers.

But skeptics question the economics and are also troubled by possible local opposition, which can be more vociferous in densely-populated Europe than in remote Australia or the deserts of South America that have been the source of lithium supplies to date.

Undeterred, German-Australian start-up Vulcan Energy Resources says it can deliver carbon-neutral lithium, based on extraction using geothermal energy harnessed by up to five power stations it plans to construct.

German utility EnBW already has geothermal power stations and is exploring whether lithium can be a profitable by-product.

"The lithium deposit we're talking about here is gigantic and its properties are ideal for our goal of producing high-quality lithium on a large industrial scale in Germany," Vulcan Energy Resources co-founder Horst Kreuter told Reuters.

The company plans to invest 1.7 billion euros ($2 billion), of which it has so far raised about 75 million euros, to build geothermal power stations and facilities to extract the lithium.

It says it could be extracting 15,000 tons of lithium hydroxide per year at two sites by 2024 and then, in a second phase from 2025 onwards, it targets an output of 40,000 tons per year at up to three additional sites.

Kreuter says he is already in talks with cathode and battery manufacturers, as well as the car industry.

He has powerful backing from Hancock Prospecting, led by Executive Chairman Gina Rinehart, one of Australia's leading investors.

In an emailed statement, Hancock Prospecting said it was focusing on lithium projects with "the potential to produce a high-quality product at a competitive cost" and was supporting Vulcan in its development of a pilot plant.

China’s Ganfeng submits $264.5m buyout offer for Bacanora Lithium

07 May 2021

Bacanora’s independent directors, who consider Ganfeng’s offer as ‘attractive’, intend to recommend the deal to shareholders once it becomes a formal proposal. The possible deal would be subject to Chinese authorities’ approval.

According to the latest offer, Ganfeng will acquire the remaining shares in Bacanora at 67.5p per share. The deal values Bacanora Lithium at up to £267m.

In February 2021, Ganfeng said that it will raise its stake in Bacanora from 17.41% to 28.88%. This deal is planned to be completed soon.

During the same month, Ganfeng signed a joint venture agreement with Bacanora for the development of the Sonora Lithium Project in Mexico.

The JV agreement has been signed after Ganfeng exercised its option to increase its stake to 50% from 22.5% in Sonora Lithium (SLL), the holding company of the lithium project.

The China-based firm is the cornerstone investor and offtake partner of Bacanora.

Ganfeng will acquire the additional 27.5% stake in SLL by providing £21.8m in funding, which will be used towards the development of the Sonora project.

The latest Ganfeng offer to Bacanora comes amid the surging price of lithium, a key electric vehicle battery ingredient, following a three-year downturn, triggering a wave of agreements in the sector.

Bolivia launches call for lithium extraction
Bolivia has launched a second international call, after a first attempt failed in 2019, to seek potential investors for its huge lithium resources.

MAY 4, 2021 PILAR SÁNCHEZ MOLINA

Bolivia has announced plans to resume lithium extraction, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy and state-owned Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB) last week.

The call is aimed at companies that have direct lithium-extraction technology (EDL) and that can conduct pilot tests at the Uyuni, Coipasa and Pastos Grandes salt flats, the Bolivian government said.

International players such as Russia's Uranium 1G, China's Gangfeng Lithium and TBEA, and U.S.-based EnergyX recently participated in an online meeting that YLB and the ministry held with potential investors. Experts at the meeting outlined the characteristics of EDL technology.

“EDL technology is a step toward innovation that will provide important opportunities to generate technical and technological growth and that is what we are here to present today,” said Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy Franklin Molina.

This is the second attempt to exploit lithium in Bolivia. YLB and Germany's ACI Systems agreed in October 2019 to set up a joint venture to exploit lithium from Bolivia. Around $1.2 billion was to be invested in a high-tech complex at the Uyuni salt flat, with the main product to be lithium-ion batteries. Under the terms of their agreement, YLB was set to take a 51% stake in the joint venture. Just a month later, however, the government stopped the project by decree, without giving any explanation.

In April 2018, the Bolivian authorities said that ACI Systems had been chosen to commercialize Bolivian lithium from among the eight expressions of interest the government had received. The agreement would have had a duration of 70 years.

Salar de Uyuni is believed to be the world's largest lithium deposit. The original plan was to produce 30,000 to 40,000 tons of lithium hydroxide a year from 2022, with investments of €300 million to €400 million.

Eramet extracts lithium in Europe

Michael McCrae Tuesday May 11, 2021

Eramet announced Tuesday that it succeeded in extracting lithium from geothermal brine at the Rittershoffen geothermal power plant in the Rhine Rift Valley.

The pilot-scale test was conducted in early 2021. The Rittershoffen heat plant is located in the North of Alsace, France.

The company said it used an innovative extraction process that is different from conventional methods, which rely on evaporation. Eramet said its process minimizes water consumption while achieving an 85% yield compared to a conventional processing method, which only achieves 50% yield.

"Eramet's teams used the groundbreaking direct lithium extraction process developed as part of its Centenario Lithium project, which aims to extract lithium from the brines contained in a salar in Argentina," writes the company.

"This process, for which several patents have been granted, is based on an innovative material developed by Eramet and IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN). It has been adapted to work with hot brines under the pressure conditions used to produce heat and electricity in the Rhine Rift Valley."

Portugal may delay auction for lithium licenses to 2022

CECILIA JAMASMIE MAY 13, 2021

Portugal’s long-awaited auction of licenses to explore for lithium may have to wait until next year as the country faces some hurdles implementing a new mining law that grants municipalities more say in mining projects.

The new set of mining rules, approved last October but only effective earlier this month, give local authorities the right to veto lithium projects and to 50% of the royalties paid to the state.

The new law also calls for environmental impact studies in eight lithium-rich areas in northern and central Portugal, where opposition to mining runs high. Those studies, yet to begin, are expected to take at least six months, Portugal’s the environment ministry said on Thursday.

The licences auction, initially planned for 2018, has been delayed multiple time due to worries over the environmental impact mining could cause.

Advocates of Portugal’s hoped-for lithium boom argue that local disruption is a small price to pay for tackling the world’s climate crisis. They point out that innovations such as solar energy parks, hydroelectric plants and windfarms, while contributing to lowering CO2 emissions in the long term, all have some impact on local populations.

Savannah Resources (LSE: SAV), one of the very few companies already present in the European nation, highlighted in a presentation last year, that its Mina do Barroso project would contribute to enough battery packs to prevent the emission of 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The multi-commodity developer, which is listed on the AIM, the London Stock Exchange’s international market for smaller firms, acquired a 75% interest in the project in May 2017.

Since then, Savannah has maintained a fast-paced development approach as part of its plan to become Europe’s most significant producer of spodumene lithium.

The company estimates its mine would contribute more than 1.2 billion euros (US$1.44 billion) to Portugal’s gross domestic product. It recently also said Mina de Barroso’s may cost less to build than originally estimated.

Portugal, already Europe’s top lithium producer, accounts for about 11% of the global market, but its output is entirely used to make ceramics and glassware. That’s why Europe relies on lithium imports from Latin America’s “Lithium Triangle,” as well from Australia and China.

The country hopes to soon change that, becoming a significant supplier of lithium in Europe. A study by the Portuguese University of Minho, conducted for Savannah Resources, found that the nation’s 60,000 tonnes of known lithium reserves (0,4% of the world’s reserves) are “insufficient to meet the demand for lithium derivatives for the production of batteries in Europe,”Euronews reported.

The study, however, also says those reserves “are very relevant in reducing Europe’s dependence on other regions of the globe and increasing the security of Europe’s supply chain.”

Electrifying transport has become a top priority in the move to a lower-carbon future. In Europe, car travel accounts for around 12% of all the continent’s carbon emissions. To keep in line with the Paris agreement, emissions from cars and vans will need to drop by more than a third (37.5%) by 2030.

Leading Chinese Lithium Producer May Open Battery Plant In Argentina

By MINING.com - May 17, 2021

China’s Ganfeng Lithium, one of the world’s top producers of the commodity used in electric vehicle batteries, has inked an initial deal to explore setting up a batteries plant in Argentina.

The Chinese company, which counts automakers Tesla and BMW among its customers, is developing the Cauchari-Olaroz lithium brine project in Argentina’s northwestern Jujuy province.

The project, in which Ganfeng has a 51% stake, is slated to produce of 40,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent per year and is scheduled to start production in the first half of 2022.

The non-binding agreement to explore building a plant was signed with Argentina’s Ministry of Productive Development and the Jujuy provincial government.

The parties also agreed to look at the viability of joint development of projects as well as investment opportunities in lithium exploration and extraction, a statement from the Argentinian ministry said.

“We want to support the industrial development of Argentina to make it one of the most important lithium-producing countries in the world,” Ganfeng Chairman Li Liangbin said in that statement.

The firm is also pursuing a lithium brine project in Argentina’s Salta province, near Jujuy, and expects to this year receive the environmental assessment permit needed to start construction.

Lithium Americas, Ganfeng planning Stage 2 expansion at Caucharí-Olaroz

BY: JACKSON CHEN MAY 28, 2021

Lithium Americas and partner Ganfeng Lithium have approved a second-stage expansion at the Caucharí-Olaroz lithium project in Jujuy province, Argentina.

Caucharí-Olaroz, named after the two salars in northwest Argentina where the project is located, has an annual production capacity of 40,000 tonnes lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) over a projected mine life of 40 years.

Development planning is now underway for the Stage 2 expansion, which is expected to add at least 20,000 tonnes per year of production capacity to the Caucharí-Olaroz operation beginning in 2025.

Construction of the Stage 2 expansion is expected to begin in the first half of 2022, following the commissioning and start-up of the Stage 1 operation.

Infrastructure additions to support long-term expansions beyond Stage 2 are also targeted by the JV partners.

Meanwhile, construction of the initial 40,000 tonne per year Stage 1 operation is progressing and remains on track for completion within the next year. First production is expected in mid-2022.

In the second quarter of 2021, senior members of Ganfeng Lithium’s commissioning and construction team arrived in Argentina to assist the project through to start-up.

“Caucharí-Olaroz is on track to become the largest new lithium brine operation in over 20 years,” Lithium Americas’ chairman George Ireland stated in a news release.

The Caucharí-Olaroz partners plan to provide further details of the Stage 2 expansion plan by the fourth quarter of this year, followed by an updated feasibility study in 2022.

Sigma joining lithium top tier after doubling Brazil project capacity

MINING.COM Staff Writer | June 2, 2021

Sigma Lithium Resources’ (TSX-V: SGMA) preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for the second deposit at its Grota do Cirilo project, released on Wednesday, doubles production capacity of battery-grade lithium concentrate to around 440,000 tonnes per year (66,000 lithium carbonate equivalent).

At 66ktpa LCE capacity, which could be reached before the end of 2023, Grota do Cirilo would fall just outside the top five in terms of output capacity after Albemarle, Ganfeng, SQM, Pilbara Minerals and Galaxy.

SIGN UP FOR THE BATTERY METALS DIGEST
A pre-feasibility study is expected in the third quarter this year, but phase 2 is likely only the beginning for Grota do Cirilo which is wholly-owned by Sigma – the project area covers nearly 200 square kilometres and includes nine past producing lithium mines of roughly equal size.

Phase 1 at the project located in Minas Gerais state exploits the Xuxa deposit and construction is set to begin in the third quarter this year. First production at the fully funded project following a C$42 million private placement in February is targeted for Q3 2022 at a capacity of 220ktpa (33ktpa LCE).

Phase 2, on the Barreiro orebody, should follow a year later. According to the PEA, phase 2 production has a projected life of mine of approximately 13 years with 20.5 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources. At 1.55% Li2O grade ore Grota do Cirilo is the third richest hard-rock deposit in the world after Greenbushes and Manono and phase 2 grades of 1.42% places it at no six behind Wabouchi and Mt Cattlin.

Albemarle to boost extraction in search for green growth

Bloomberg News | June 10, 2021 |

The world’s biggest lithium producer is proceeding with a project to extract more of the battery metal from the brine it pumps up from a Chilean salt flat in a sign of its confidence in the country and global demand.

Albemarle Corp. is introducing a way of extracting more of the lithium that’s normally captured in salts, thereby lifting yields to 80-85% from 50-55%, Chief Executive Officer Kent Masters said in an interview.

With a budget of less than $200 million, the yield improvement project will take about 18 months to implement and another six months to start hitting sales.
