Cornish Lithium granted rights for offshore exploration

Cecilia Jamasmie | January 7, 2021

Cornish Lithium, a British miner eager to lead the development of an industry for the battery metal in the UK, has been given the green light to explore for the battery metal in geothermal waters off the coast of Cornwall.

The permit comes after a two-year tender process held by the Crown Estate, which manages the seabed surrounding the United Kingdom.

Cornish Lithium will begin its desk-based exploration program to start identifying potential geological targets for later research. It says that physical exploration work is not anticipated for at least four years.

The company is targeting four sites across the north and south coasts of Cornwall, where it plans to potentially extract lithium using a low-impact and environmentally responsible process. Mining lithium from geothermal water allows using the same hot rock water to power up turbines, generating zero-carbon electricity and heat.

The £4 million ($5.4m) project will trial direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology, which removes dissolved lithium compounds from water without the need for the large evaporation ponds, such as those used in South America’s salt flats.

Image

Lithium from Chile and Argentina is of higher grade than geothermal sources, but concerns over the sustainability of those operations are weighing on miners’ plans. Giants including Albemarle (NYSE: ALB) and SQM (NYSE: SQM) continue to be questioned as they extract their product from pools of brine beneath Chile’s Atacama desert, the world’s driest.

“Lithium has an important and exciting role to play in helping unlock an electric economy and deliver the UK’s commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050,” Nick Everington, Portfolio Manager at The Crown Estate, said in a media statement.

Cornish Lithium recently decided to also begin exploring for other battery metals, such as cobalt and copper.

The area around St. Day and Gwennap was the richest copper-producing region in the world in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The junior revealed in 2018 that it needed about £5 million ($6.2m) to go ahead with its plans. Since then, it has secured more than £2m ($2.5m) from private backers and it’s already aiming at listing on the London Stock Exchange by 2022.

Good timing
Cornish Lithium’s efforts come amid the British government’s push to attract more investment into battery factories in order to protect the future of local car plants.

Figures released on Wednesday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the local industry body, showed new car sales in the UK fell by almost 30% to 1.63 million in 2020, the toughest year for the market since 1992.

UK carmakers have three years to source local electric car batteries, following the Brexit free trade deal inked last year. Under the agreement, all European trade in cars and parts will continue to be free of tariffs or quotas after the Brexit transition period ended on December 31, as long as they contain enough content from either UK or EU factories.

Batteries will at first be allowed to have up to 70% of materials from countries outside the EU or the UK. From 2024 onwards, however, that requirement will tighten to 50%.

Lithium extraction pilot plant planned at Clayton Valley

MINING.COM Staff Writer | March 22, 2021

Image

Pure Energy Minerals’ partner, Schlumberger New Energy, announced plans to develop a lithium extraction pilot plant at the Clayton Valley lithium brine project in Nevada.

Plant construction and development will be in the hands of NeoLith Energy, which is a new venture launched by Schlumberger New Energy.

According to the companies, NeoLith Energy’s approach uses a differentiated direct lithium extraction process (DLE) to enable the production of high-purity, battery-grade lithium material while reducing the production time from over a year to weeks.

The plant is being considered the first step towards a full-scale, commercial lithium production facility, which is expected to employ an environmentally friendly method for subsurface brine extraction and lithium production that requires a significantly smaller footprint and reduces water consumption by over 85% compared to existing methods.

In a press release, Schlumberger New Energy said that it has invested more than $15 million in the DLE process technology, and the development and operation of the pilot plant in Nevada will require a similar amount of investment.

“The innovative and sustainable DLE process has the potential to disrupt the lithium economy by opening new opportunities to existing production regions, and to enable new lithium production regions across the globe to meet the growing demand,” the statement reads.

The Clayton Valley project is owned by Pure Energy and operated by Schlumberger New Energy. It comprises 948 claims over 9,450 hectares, representing the largest mineral land holdings in the Clayton Valley.

Piedmont Lithium (ASX: PLL) has closed a public offering worth $122.5 million. The deal consists of 1.75 million American Depositary Shares (ADS), with each ADS representing 100 of the company’s ordinary shares.

The proceeds will be used to continue the development of Piedmont’s fully-integrated spodumene-to-hydroxide project in North Carolina, about 45 km west of Charlotte, including a definitive feasibility study, which it expects to complete in the third quarter of this year, testwork, permitting, further exploration drilling, mineral resource estimate updates, and ongoing land consolidation.

The company has commenced a 25,000-metre drill program, which is expected to provide a mineral resource update in April, and plans to complete infill drilling by August.

If all goes to plan, Piedmont said it expects the construction of the project to be completed in 2022.

In September 2020, the company agreed to supply Tesla with high-purity lithium ore mineral for up to 10 years. The initial five-year agreement will see Piedmont supply the electric vehicle maker with about a third of its planned 160,000-tonnes-per-year spodumene concentrate from its deposits in North Carolina. Both companies can then extend the contract for another five years.

The agreement is conditional upon both companies agreeing to start deliveries of spodumene concentrate between July 2022 and July 2023.

Piedmont said that the proceeds from the public offering will also be used to fund strategic investments in Sayona Mining (ASX: SYA; US-OTC: DMNXF), an emerging lithium miner with projects in Quebec, Canada, and Western Australia, and Sayona Quebec, a subsidiary of Sayona Mining, an Australian lithium explorer developing projects in Quebec.

The company also plans to use the funds to make other potential strategic initiatives and for general corporate purposes.

Encore un nouveau prospect de Lithium aux USA, dans le Nevada.
Iconic Minerals ready for permitting Bonnie Claire lithium project

MINING.COM Staff Writer | April 15, 2021

Iconic Minerals (TSXV: ICM) announced it has begun total project scale permitting at the Bonnie Claire lithium property located 48 kilometers north of Beatty, Nevada.

In a press release, the Canadian miner said that the permit, known as a “plan of operation,” will allow exploration and development of the project for the next several years. The plan includes the building of an all-weather access road into the project site and a facility site, as well as licenses to conduct trenching for bulk samples and access to 39 proposed future drill sites.

The Bonnie Claire property is located within Sarcobatus Valley, which is approximately 30 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide. According to Iconic Minerals, quartz-rich volcanic tuffs containing anomalous amounts of lithium occur within and adjacent to the valley.

“Drill results from the salt flat have included lithium values as high as 2550 ppm Li and a 1560 foot (roughly 475 meters) vertical intercept that averaged 1153 ppm Li. The current 43-101 report on the project notes that, with a cutoff grade of 600 ppm Li and an average grade of 1,027 ppm Li, one square mile contains an inferred resource of 5.025 billion kilograms Li,” the media brief states.

Encore du Lithium repéré en adjacent du projet Ewoyaa au Ghana.
IronRidge reports high lithium grades at Ghana project

MINING.COM Staff Writer | April 14, 2021

Image

IronRidge Resources (AIM: IRR) reported multiple high-grade lithium pegmatite drill intersections at new targets adjacent to the Ewoyaa lithium project in Ghana, where the company has defined a JORC (2012) compliant mineral resource estimate of 14.5Mt at 1.31% Li2O in the inferred and indicated category, including 4.5Mt at 1.39% Li2O in the indicated category.

In a press release, the miner said that among relevant results, the highest reported grade to date yielded 4% Li2O over 1m in hole GRC0219 from 62m depth. This was followed by GRC0221 over 36m at 1.44% Li2O from 83m, including 10m at 1.8% Li2O from 87m.

“We are very pleased with the ongoing results received, which have confirmed high-grades and mineralisation continuity over 400m of strike, with true mineralised pegmatite widths up to 25m which remains open at depth and along strike to the east,” Vincent Mascolo, IronRidge CEO, said in the media brief.

“We have seen our highest grade, of over 4% Li2O, intersected to date at the ELP. Drilling is ongoing with approximately 10,000m of the expanded 16,500m completed.”

According to Mascolo, management is confident that additional targets tested in an upcoming 4,000-metre drilling campaign will increase the resource scale and improve project economics.

“Targeting a plus 10-year mine life, it is estimated that every additional year of production will add $40 million in NPV per annum on a scoping study that has defined a post-tax NPV of $345 million over an 8-year LOM,” the executive said.

Millennial Lithium achieves high purity battery-grade lithium at Argentinian project

Millennial Lithium announced that it was able to produce lithium carbonate of battery-grade purity from the first batch of brine processed through the company’s pilot plant at its Pastos Grandes project in Argentina.

Millennial said the plant produced lithium carbonate with a purity of 99.96%, just a bit over the typical battery-grade quality lithium carbonate of > 99.5% purity.

According to the Canadian company, the brine feedstock was derived from the production well PGMW17-04 on the Pastos Grandes Salar, which was pumped to ponds that concentrate the lithium carbonate by solar evaporation.

In detail, the pilot plant initially produces a first stage lithium carbonate, whose technical grade is basic battery-grade and which can be further purified by recrystallization using the addition of CO2 in order to make a lithium bicarbonate solution. This solution is filtered to remove final impurities, heated, the CO2 recovered and lithium carbonate recrystallize as consistent battery-quality lithium carbonate.

With this first batch, Millennial said it was able to achieve battery-grade quality lithium carbonate at the completion of the basic stage and a premium quality battery-grade at the completion of the purification process.

Even though the field team conducted analytical work first at the project development park laboratory, check analyses were later performed by Kemetco Research, which also conducted physical testing, including particle size determination and a scanning electron microscope study for crystal habit determination.

“The analytical results from this first batch indicate battery-grade lithium carbonate can be produced prior to the CO2 purification stage, and with CO2 purification, we have the potential to produce a superior premium BG lithium carbonate product which may command a price premium,” Farhad Abasov, Millennial Lithium’s president and CEO, said in a press release. “We have also demonstrated that we have the option to produce a high-quality technical grade and battery-grade product at a lower cost than estimated in the company’s feasibility study using the basic processing.”

Located in the northwestern part of Argentina, Pastos Grandes covers over 12,619 hectares. To date, Millennial has invested over $40 million in exploration and development work on the property, which includes 22 completed exploration/monitoring wells, four pumping test production wells, pilot ponds, the pilot plant as well as a year-round camp supported by a hybrid solar power system.
