Prospect de Nickel et autres métaux associés dans le Montana
Stillwater expands resource, nickel by more than half at Montana project

Staff Writer | January 26, 2023

Stillwater Critical Minerals (TSXV: PGE) has increased its resource estimate tonnage significantly at its Stillwater West battery and platinum metals project in Montana as it looks to emulate world-leading neighbour Sibanye-Stillwater (NYSE: SBSW; JSE: SSW).

The new inferred resource estimate raised tonnage by 62% compared with figures from 2021, according to a company filing on Wednesday. Contained metal jumped across the board: nickel up 52%; copper 44%, cobalt 31%; platinum 66%, gold 30% and rhodium 76%.

“These increases speak to the fantastic growth potential and under-explored nature of the Stillwater West project,” president and chief executive officer Michael Rowley said in a news release. “Its world-class endowment of eight critical minerals is unique in the United States as a district-scale asset located in an active, producing district that has a long history of large-scale critical mineral production.”

........................

The Stillwater West project has 255 million tonnes grading 0.19% nickel, 0.09% copper, 0.02% cobalt, 0.15 gram platinum per tonne, 0.25 gram palladium, 0.05 gram and 0.02 gram rhodium (0.39% nickel-equivalent and 1.19 grams palladium-equivalent per tonne), according to the company filing. The cut-off grade is 0.2% nickel.

Contained metal is 1.1 billion lb. nickel, 499 million lb. copper, 91 million lb. cobalt, 1.2 million oz. platinum, 2.1 million oz. palladium, 395,000 oz. gold and 115,000 oz. rhodium (2.2 billion lb. nickel-equivalent and 9.8 million oz. palladium-equivalent).

Philippines may tax nickel exports to follow Indonesia’s success

Bloomberg News | January 30, 2023

The Philippines is considering taxing nickel ore exports among options to push miners in the world’s second-biggest supplier of the metal to invest in processing instead of just shipping raw minerals, a route that top nickel producer Indonesia has taken and succeeded in.

“We want to move out from being just part of the supply chain. We want to be part of the value chain,” Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Antonia Yulo Loyzaga said in an interview in her office on Monday. Without facilities to process mineral ore, “we will just be a vendor country. And we don’t want to be a vendor country,” said Loyzaga, who’s also in charge of the mining sector.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s government is seeking to boost mining to further grow the economy that posted its strongest expansion in nearly five decades last year. With less than 3% being mined of 9 million hectares identified by the Southeast Asian nation as having high mineral reserves, the potential is huge. “We are open for business,” said Loyzaga, who assumed her post in July.

“There’s a range of actions including a progressive look at taxing exports” of raw nickel to boost investments in processing facilities here, Loyzaga said, adding that the agency’s Mines and Geosciences Bureau had earlier suggested for the Philippines to “go by way of Indonesia.”

Indonesia and the Philippines are the world’s biggest suppliers of nickel – used in making stainless steel and a key component in batteries for electric vehicles – to top market China. But Indonesia banned exports of metal ores in 2020 and limited shipments to refined products, boosting its nickel exports from $3 billion to $30 billion in two years as Chinese companies built refineries and smelters there.

Inspired by Indonesia’s success, Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual said the agency is weighing whether to impose an export tax on raw nickel exports or ban ore shipments completely.

Vale Indonesia breaks ground on $2.5 billion ferronickel smelter
Nickel miner PT Vale Indonesia broke ground on a 37.5 trillion rupiah ($2.48 billion) ferronickel smelter Sulawesi island on Friday, an Indonesian senior minister said.

Reuters | February 10, 2023

The Bahodopi project will produce ferronickel with 73,000 to 80,000 tonnes of nickel content per year, Vale has said.

“I hope this will be followed by the laying of the next stones. God willing, it can be completed in 2.5 years,” Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said in a statement.

The smelter, which would employ up to 15,000 workers during construction phase is a joint project between Vale and its partners, China’s Shandong Xinhai Technology Co. Ltd and a unit of China Baowu Steel Group Corp. Ltd.

In Pomalaa, another area of Sulawesi island, Vale and its partners are developing a plant to produce 120,000 tonnes per year of mixed hydroxide precipitate, a material extracted from nickel ore that is used in batteries for electric vehicles.

Enorme ressource en Nickel dans ce nouveau prospect en Ontario.
EV Nickel’s stock soars after announcing ‘enormous’ mineral resource in Ontario

Staff Writer | March 1, 2023

Shaw Dome project in Ontario, Canada. Image from EV Nickel.

EV Nickel (TSXV: EVNI) has announced an initial mineral resource estimate for the Carl Lang A Zone target near its Shaw Dome project in Ontario that it says puts it into the league of the largest undeveloped nickel deposits in the world.

After acquiring the property, which is 25 km southeast of Timmins in April 2022, EV Nickel launched a diamond drilling program totalling 28 holes over 8,295 metres to complete an initial mineral resource estimate in accordance with National Instrument 43-101.

The mineral resource estimate showed indicated resources of 1.25 million tonnes or 2.8 billion pounds of contained nickel and inferred resources of 1.16 million tonnes or 2.6 billion pounds of contained nickel.

According to the latest results, A Zone resources totalled 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.24% nickel, split between higher-grade core with 290 million tonnes at 0.27% nickel indicated and 203 million tonnes at 0.27% nickel inferred, and lower-grade with 219 million tonnes at 0.22% nickel indicated and 294 million tonnes at 0.21% nickel inferred.

The CarLang A Zone represents only 20% of the full 10 km-long CarLang Area Trend, the company said, adding that analysis continues to review the integrated carbon capture and storage potential for CarLang.

“Defining this enormous maiden mineral resource for our Large Scale A Zone is a major milestone for EV Nickel,” CEO Sean Samson said in a news release. “The A Zone is just the beginning of the CarLang Area because we know the host units have been identified over approximately 5 times the strike length.”

“If we consider the full potential of the CarLang Trend – this is the type of generational opportunity, which is near surface and in an excellent location, that the world needs for a supply of clean nickel to help fuel the energy transition,” Samson said.

The Toronto-based junior’s stock soared 60% by market close Wednesday on the TSX Venture Exchange. Trading volume reached 634,970 compared to a daily average of 70,411. EV Nickel has a C$8.2 million ($6m) market capitalization.

Pacific Nickel secures export permit for Kolosori nickel project in Solomon Islands

By NS Energy Staff Writer 15 Mar 2023

The approval, granted by the Solomon Islands Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, allows the company to sell and export nickel ore produced from the Kolosori project

Australian nickel explorer and developer Pacific Nickel Mines has secured an Export Permit for its 80% owned Kolosori Nickel project, located on Isabel Island in the Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification granted the Export Permit approval that is valid for three years.

With the approval, the company can sell and export nickel ore produced from the Kolosori project.

Pacific Nickel said that the approval will support securing funding facilities for further development of the project.

The company has already initiated discussions with barging and mining contractors and is currently finalising finance documents with Glencore International.

Pacific Nickel CEO Geoff Hiller said: “The granting of approval for an Export Permit for the Kolosori Nickel Project is a major achievement for the Company and is significant as we advance works for the development of the project.

“The company has worked closely with the local community, the Provincial Government and the Minerals Board to satisfy regulatory requirements for the granting of this approval.

“The recent completion of a Definitive Feasibility Study, which confirms the strong economic viability of the Project, supports the confidence shown by various levels of government in the development of this project.”

Pacific Nickel aims to mobilise the mining contractor and complete the haul road to the mining area when the Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) loadout wharf is built.

The company is planning to ramp up the Kolosori Nickel project to full production this year.

Last month, the company announced the completion of the definitive feasibility study (DFS) for the Kolosori project and plans to advance the project to the execution stage.

The DFS estimated that the project would require $21.5m to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes a year of DSO over an operating mine life of three years.

Hiller added: “The company will now proceed with the finalisation of financing facilities being offered by Glencore with the aim of drawing down development funds at the earliest opportunity.

“The company believes that the project holds relatively low technical risk and that capital payback will be achieved in under 12 months.

“The company remains committed to developing the Kolosori Nickel Project for the benefit of all stakeholders.

“It will be a high-quality nickel operation and will operate in accordance with the highest possible environmental standards for the overall benefit of the Solomon Islands and its people.”

Eurobattery Minerals ups stake in Hautalampi nickel-cobalt-copper project in Finland

Staff Writer | March 21, 2023

Eurobattery Minerals announced Tuesday that the company is acquiring another 30% of shares in FinnCobalt Oy, the owner of the ground and mining rights to the Hautalampi nickel-cobalt-copper project in Finland in a €1 million ($1.8m) cash and shares deal, upping its stake to 70%.

The company has the right to acquire 100% of the shares in FinnCobalt in a staged process until May 2024.

The announcement comes a day after Eurobattery Minerals released the results of a pre-feasibility study, reporting strong economics for the project.

The 280-hectare Hautalampi project is located in the Outokumpu mining camp, the same area as the famous Keretti copper mine, which was active between 1912 and 1989. According to Eurobattery Minerals, the orebody is parallel to and above the exploited copper deposit. A historical resource estimate for the project shows 3.2 million tonnes at 0.43% nickel, 0.35% copper and 0.12% cobalt.

In 2021, an updated resource estimate released for Hautalampi showed that the total tonnage in the measured, indicated and inferred resource categories increased approximately 100%, while contained metal approximately 50% in the mine lease area.

In the measured category, the resource has been estimated at 2.58 million tonnes grading 0.38% nickel, 0.28% copper and 0.08% cobalt. In the indicated category, the estimation is at 2.70 million tonnes grading 0.31% nickel, 0.20% copper and 0.08% cobalt. Contained metals have been estimated at 18,289 tonnes of nickel, 12,783 tonnes of copper and 4,337 tonnes of cobalt.

“We are very pleased to continue to deliver on our strategy to provide battery minerals from Europe to Europe, now as the majority owner of the Hautalampi mine project,” Eurobattery Minerals CEO Roberto García said in a news release.

“With the pre-feasibility study just announced we know that the economic outlook for the battery mineral mine in Finland is strong,” said Martínez.

According to the pre-feasibility study, with a conservative metal price, and a total capital expenditure of €65.1 million euro excluding contingency the payback period is 4.6 years. Mining will commence after a one-year construction period including rehabilitation of the underground mine, construction of the surface crushing and processing plants, and a new tailings storage facility, the company said.

Total metal production during the anticipated 12 years mining operations will be 11,400 tonnes of nickel and 2,900 tonnes of cobalt in concentrate and 9,600 tonnes of copper in concentrate.

Vale Indonesia, Huayou sign $4.5bn deal with Ford for EV battery material plant
The three companies will make equity investments in the Pomalaa Block High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) project, which will process ore from Vale Indonesia’s Pomalaa Block mine to produce mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP)

By NS Energy Staff Writer 31 Mar 2023

Vale Indonesia, together with China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, has signed an agreement with US carmaker Ford Motor for the development of a $4.5bn nickel production in Indonesia.

Under the terms of the agreement, the three companies will make equity investments in the Pomalaa Block High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) project.

Vale Indonesia will supply the Pomalaa Block HPAL project with ore from its Pomalaa Block mine to produce mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP).

MHP is a lower-cost nickel product used in EV batteries with nickel-rich cathodes.

The HPAL plant, located in the Pomalaa Block, Kolaka, Southwest Sulawesi, Indonesia, is operated by the local mining company Kolaka Nickel Indonesia.

The plant can produce up to 120 kilotons per annum of contained nickel in the form of MHP, subject to regulatory approval.

Ford Model e EV industrialisation vice president Lisa Drake said: “This framework gives Ford direct control to source the nickel we need – in one of the industry’s lowest-cost ways – and allows us to ensure the nickel is mined in line with our company’s sustainability targets, setting the right ESG standards as we scale.

“Working this way puts Ford in a position to help make EVs more accessible for millions and to do it in a way that helps better protect people and the planet.”

Early site preparations have already started at the Pomalaa Block HPAL project, with full construction expected to begin this year and commercial operations in 2026.

The collaboration is anticipated to deliver materials that are crucial for the shift of the automobile industry towards EVs and support Ford’s EV production plan for 2026.

The three companies are expected to sign a separate supply agreement for a precursor cathode active material that is critical to manufacturing lithium-ion batteries.

The three-way agreement follows Vale Indonesia’s ground-breaking at Pomalaa Block last year, which is a National Strategic Project and is expected to generate 12,000 construction jobs.

Vale Indonesia CEO Febriany Eddy said: “This agreement shows it’s not just about what we mine – but how we do it. We embed our environmental, social and governance standards into everything we do, and the result is a unique collaboration with global automaker Ford and leading global mineral processor Huayou to jointly invest in this project.

“This global co-operation is in line with Indonesia’s vision to build a domestic EV ecosystem and makes PT Vale an important contributor toward addressing the world’s decarbonisation challenge, with an investment that will generate local economic benefits and ensure the optimal utilisation of Indonesia’s nickel resources.”

Un prospect de Nickel en Finlande, à coté d'une mine historique :
Bluejay Mining expands drilling at Finland nickel project

Staff Writer | March 28, 2023

Bluejay Mining (LON: JAY) has kicked off a short follow-up drill program at the Enonkoski nickel project in Finland, which is exploring in partnership with Rio Tinto (ASX, LON: RIO).

The decision comes as the London-based mineral exploration and development company unveiled on Monday results from the first exploration program of 2023 at Enonkoski, which it qualified as “encouraging”.

SIGN UP FOR THE BATTERY METALS DIGEST

Chief executive officer Bo Moller Stensgaard said one of the two drill holes had returned “significant” intervals of sulphide-droplets, representing “the highest sulphide content of any hole we have drilled in the Laukunlampi intrusion to date.”

The main objective of the brief follow-up exploration announced on Tuesday is to test the geological model, which indicates that pyroxenitic units continue towards the northwest, the company said.

Rio Tinto has a joint-venture and earn-in agreement with Blujay that could see the world’s second-largest miner progressively earn up to a 75% interest in the Finnish project.

The past-producing Enonkoski mine churned out 6.7 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.8% nickel between 1984 and 1994 and it sits within its namesake belt, which also hosts the Enonkoski project.

Blujay also has projects in Greenland, which has seen increased interest from miners as thawing sea ice attributed to climate change opens up shipping routes and exposes mineral riches. The phenomenon, however, has the country’s population divided, with some worried about the loss of tradition, while others embrace development.

Wyloo Metals, IGO secure land for first integrated battery material facility in Western Australia

Staff Writer | April 13, 2023

IGO Limited (ASX: IGO) and Wyloo Metals announced Friday that land has been secured at Kwinana for their proposed integrated battery material facility in Australia.

Wyloo and IGO are working towards making a financial investment decision on the development of the project, which involves integrating a downstream nickel refinery with a plant producing high-value nickel dominant precursor cathode active material (PCAM) for the battery supply chain.

The proposed project would combine IGO’s disruptive nickel refining technology with PCAM production expertise via a low-cost and low carbon process, the companies said in a joint statement.

The project would represent the first commercial production of PCAM in Australia and would align with the State Government’s drive to grow Western Australia’s future battery industry.

The proposed IBM Facility would be constructed in the Kwinana-Rockingham Strategic Industrial Area on approximately 30 hectares of vacant industrial land leased from the State Government. The land secured for the proposed IBM Facility is located adjacent to the Kwinana Lithium Hydroxide Refinery which is owned by Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia, a joint venture between IGO and Tianqi Lithium Corporation.

IGO and Wyloo are currently advancing discussions with a global battery chemical manufacturer who have indicated strong interest in partnering in the project, and working to release a feasibility Study in mid-2024.

“We’re extremely excited to build upon the immense potential that exists here in WA with the development of Australia’s first commercial PCAM facility in Kwinana. Areas like Kambalda and Leinster in Western Australia hold some of the world’s highest-grade nickel, with huge potential for more discoveries to be made,” Wyloo CEO Luca Giacovazzi said in the statement.

“WA is already a leading supplier of critical minerals, and this is the spark it needs to become a global hub for battery metals,” Giacovazzi said. “There’s a huge opportunity to grow the industry and Western Australian jobs by supporting the world’s transition to electric vehicles.”
