Jiangxi Copper to invest $1.8bn in making foil for batteries

Reuters | July 15, 2021

Jiangxi Copper Co, one of China’s biggest copper producers, said it would invest 11.4 billion yuan ($1.76 billion) in a project to make 100,000 tonnes per year of copper foil for lithium batteries.

The bumper investment commitment – unanimously approved at a board meeting on Thursday – comes after the company last week flagged a more than 300% year-on-year jump in net profits for the first half amid booming prices.

In a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Jiangxi Copper said the foil project would be located in Shangrao Economic and Technological Development Zone in its home province of Jiangxi.

It will be divided into two 50,000 tonne phases, with the first 25,000 tonne line of Phase 1 due to start up by end-2023 before full production is reached a year later. The second phase is targeted for start-up by end-2028.

“The first half of 2021 has seen a tidal wave of announcements of new electrodeposited copper foil mill projects, as well as second and third phase expansions at existing mills,” consultancy Roskill said in a note last month.

The foil is used as a current collector in lithium batteries and companies are investing in production to meet growing demand from the burgeoning electric-vehicle sector.

Global foil capacity additions announced in January-May alone total 560,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to a 67% increase in the nameplate industry capacity at end-2020, Roskill said.

Jiangxi Copper also said it would invest 800 million yuan in another project to make 220,000 tonnes per year of copper rods and 600 million yuan in a joint venture to make 30,000 tonnes per year of cast materials. That brings the total investment across the three projects to 12.8 billion yuan ($1.98 billion).

The copper rod project and first 15,000 tonnes phase of the cast materials project are due for launch by the end of 2022 and will also be in Shangrao, it said.

Floods stop work at Aurubis’s Stolberg copper products plant

Reuters | July 16, 2021

Aurubis AG, Europe’s largest copper producer, on Friday said that floods had stopped production at its Stolberg copper products plant in Germany.

Force majeure has been declared on deliveries from the plant which was hit by floods on Wednesday evening, it said.

No employees were hurt in the flooding and Aurubis expects the financial losses from the flooding and lost production will be covered by insurance, an Aurubis spokesperson said.

Torrential rain in western Germany this week caused over 80 deaths in flooding after swollen rivers swept through towns and villages in the western states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate.

The Aurubis Stolberg plant is in North Rhine-Westphalia near Aachen and produces about 35,000 tonnes of copper products annually.

“The surrounding access roads and the entire downtown area nearby were flooded, in some cases washed away, and strongly impacted overall,” Aurubis said. “An initial damage assessment clearly indicates that the flooding has permanently affected the entire company premises and that restarting operations will require considerable efforts.”

About 400 employees produce high-precision strip and wire for industrial applications at the Stolberg plant including electrical, electronics, automotive and engineering customers for sale on the global market.

It is not possible to say when the plant will reopen, Aurubis said.

“The impacts of the severe weather on our plant in Stolberg are a shock to all of us,” said Aurubis CEO Roland Harings in a statement. “We are very relieved that all of the employees are safe, and we express our thanks to those who are actively helping on site. We will do everything to rebuild the plant and to restart production as fast as possible.”

Another Aurubis group plant in Stolberg, Schwermetall Halbzeugwerk is not affected by the flooding because the site is located on higher land.

Rio Tinto to invest $108m for underground mining at Kennecott copper site
The project also includes trial of underground battery electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions at Kennecott and other operations

By NS Energy Staff Writer 23 Jul 2021

Rio Tinto has approved a $108m investment to conduct orebody characterisation studies for underground mining at the Kennecott copper operations in Salt Lake City, Utah in the US.

The announcement follows the company’s $25m investment approved in early 2020, to complete a pre-feasibility study of Kennecott underground operations, and $1.5bn investment approved in late 2019.

The Kennecott copper mine is expected to see potential underground mining, along with open pit operations, for increased copper output.

With declared mineral resources of 20Mt at 3.65% copper and 1.62g/t gold, the mine is said to hold a significant potential for underground development.

Rio Tinto Copper chief executive Bold Baatar said: “Kennecott holds a range of options to extend our supply of copper and other critical materials, to meet the strong demand being driven by electric vehicles and renewable power technologies.

“The operation is uniquely positioned to supply these emerging markets, with one of only two operating smelters in the United States that also processes concentrates from third parties, a long history delivering high quality products and significant resources that are yet to be developed.”

The works under the planned feasibility study include collecting important geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological data, and is expected to be completed in 2024.

Data collected during the study will be used to inform Rio Tinto’s assessment of underground development options.

The company intends to extend the existing infrastructure from previous underground projects to access the North Rim Skarn orebody, to enable the development of crosscuts and further drilling.

The project includes nearly 15,000ft (4,500m) of lateral development, 1,000ft (300m) of vertical development and associated support infrastructure.

Also, the project includes the trial of underground battery electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions at Kennecott and across the company’s operations worldwide.

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions are planned to supply a battery electric haul truck and loader to evaluate performance and suitability for future underground mining fleets.

Codelco breaks ground at $1.4bn Salvador copper mine expansion

Cecilia Jamasmie | August 25, 2021

Chile’s state miner Codelco, the world’s no.1 copper producer, has broken ground at the $1.4 billion expansion of the Salvador copper mine, which will extend the productive life of the aging operation by 47 years and increase output by almost 50%.

The Rajo Inca project will convert Salvador, in operation since 1959, from an underground mine to an open pit.

“Until now this division depended on three underground mines. The new Salvador will obtain all the contribution of the mineral from a single open pit, with copper grades 40% higher than the current ones, which will influence the increase in production and productivity,” Juan Benavides, president of Codelco’s board of directors, said in the statement.

The mine was expected to run out of ore this year, but the expansion — approved in January — gives Codelco access to another 796 million tonnes of mineral, with an estimated 0.59% copper grade on average.

The Salvador Division currently has the lowest productivity of any of the Chilean miner’s deposits, generating just 50,600 tonnes, just under 3% of Codelco’s total output, last year.

With surface exploitation, the mine will yield 90,000 tonnes per year. Full production at the new section is slated to begin in the first half of 2023.

Water scarcity is starting to bite in biggest copper supplier

Bloomberg News | August 20, 2021

Water shortages are starting to threaten copper production in a country that accounts for more than a quarter of global supply.

In Chile this week, a BHP Group mine was ordered to halt groundwater pumping for three months, while Antofagasta Plc warned it will produce less than expected this year amid water supply constraints.

While BHP’s Cerro Colorado is a small operation coming to the end of its life and Antofagasta’s guidance cut isn’t huge, the disruptions underscore the challenges of running mines in one of the world’s driest deserts. Copper mines have been pumping water out from aquifers under the soil for decades, often to the detriment of local communities.

The issue has risen to prominence recently as the desert expands south amid a decade-long drought, potentially exacerbated by global warming. The industry has responded by stepping up efforts to switch to seawater, which is expected to account for almost half of its total water consumption by 2031.

Chile is now drafting a new constitution in the wake of mass protests against social injustices, with lawmakers pushing for reforms to a water system that has relied heavily on private enterprise and market forces to allocate rights and deliver services.

In that context, an environmental court took the surprising step of blocking, albeit temporarily, Cerro Colorado’s use of water from the Lagunillas aquifer starting on Oct. 1 as it hears a lawsuit that accuses the operation of environmental damage.

The company said it would “evaluate the courses of action based on instruments that the legal framework provides and will take operational actions to comply with the measures that are available.”

The smallest of BHP’s three copper mines in Chile has faced opposition from local communities over its use of underground water. Last year, it announced plans to scale back operations, effectively bringing forward a programmed downsizing ahead of the 2023 expiry of its permits. At the time, the company said it would continue to explore options to extend mining beyond 2023 by using seawater.

Antofagasta now expects to produce 710,000 tons to 740,000 tons of copper this year, down from its previous forecast of 730,000 tons to 760,000 tons. The Santiago-based company is building a desalination plant, but that won’t come into operation until the second half of 2022, putting at risk another 50,000 tons of copper production next year.

“This year has been the driest of a 12-year drought in Chile,” Antofagasta said in a statement Thursday. “Given the traditional rainy season runs from June to September, it is looking increasingly likely that the low levels of precipitation will continue until at least the Southern Hemisphere winter next year.”

Mes Aynak Copper Mine In Afghanistan: With Taliban's Backing, China's Quest For Mineral Wealth in Afghanistan Threatens To Destroy Priceless Buddhist Heritage

Mes Aynak in Afghanistan holds 240 million tonnes of 2.3% grade copper ore making it one of the largest untapped high-grade projects in the world. The reserves are estimated to be worth at least $50bn. It is also the site of ancient Buddhist ruins. The ruins sit atop 450 million metric tonnes of copper ore.

In 2007, the Afghan government signed a 30-year lease agreement to develop the Mess Aynak mining project with a consortium of state-owned Chinese mining companies including China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC) and Jiangxi Copper, a Chinese copper producer. The agreement was worth $3.4bn. But the plans went awry due to the security situation in Afghanistan. Chinese companies are yet to mine a tonne of copper from the resource.

With Taliban 2.0 in the saddle, Chinese firms are now looking at reviving their plans.

Jiangxi Copper on Monday (Sep 13) announced that the company, along with the Metallurgical Corp of China (MCC), is monitoring the situation in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and will push forward with the Mes Aynak copper mine when they can.

"Due to the unstable situation in Afghanistan, the Mes Aynak copper mine invested in by the company has not yet undergone substantial construction," Reuters reported Zheng Gaoqing, the chairman of Jiangxi Copper as saying during an online briefing.

Buddhist Heritage Site

Mes Aynak, about 40 kilometers southeast of the capital, Kabul, is also the site of ancient Buddhist ruins. The ruins sit atop 450 million metric tonnes of copper ore.

Once a major hub on the Silk Road, the site encompasses close 400 statues and wall paintings across a citadel, numerous monasteries, stupas and small forts. The site provides an extraordinary window into the development of Buddhism in the region. Heritage campaigners have called for preserving the site,

According to a report in The Art Newspaper, mining contracts do now go ahead, Chinese firm MCC will need to build a railroad in order to remove the copper and will request the clearance of the archaeological remains.

With Taliban cosying up to China and likely to give a go ahead to the project, priceless Buddhist heritage could be lost forever.

China though has maintained that project is critical for the economy of Afghanistan and claimed that western nations are unleashing a 'malicious propaganda' upset over Kabul's decision to award the contract to the Chinese company. Chinese observers point out that archaeologists working on the site have had sufficient time to recover the artifacts, but they have failed to utilize it properly.

Mes Aynak is a site 40 km southeast of Kabul, located in a barren region of Logar Province. The site contains the world’s second largest copper deposit which looms as major revenue source for Afghanistan.

The Aynak is also a vast complex of over twenty ruin locations, including numerous 5t h-6t h century Buddhist monasteries, as fortress and evidence of even older Bronze Age settlements buried beneath the rubble of ancient copper mines.

In 2008 MJAM-MCC a Chinese company was awarded a contract to recover the copper resources for the government of Afghanistan. It is a major project for Afghanistan in terms of employment, training, revenue and infrastructure development.
