Texas’ grid to get 200MW of battery storage from Wärtsilä

15 Mar 2021,

Two standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) totalling 200MW of output will be deployed in Texas’ ERCOT market by the energy division at Wärtsilä Corporation.

Finland-headquartered marine and power systems technology manufacturer, which has become one of the biggest system integrators for energy storage in the US market, said today that it has been awarded contracts for the two projects in Southern Texas by developer Able Grid Energy Solutions.

Wärtsilä Energy will supply its recently-launched GridSolv Quantum advanced energy storage solution to both sites, as well as the company’s GEMS energy management software and controls platform. The contracts with Able Grid also include 10-year guaranteed asset performance agreements.

The systems, called Ignacio and Madero, are thought to be around 100MW each, equalling the US state’s largest battery storage project under construction so far, the 100MW Chisholm Grid BESS which is also an Able Grid project. Solar inverter manufacturer Sungrow’s energy storage systems division is supplying Chisholm Grid, on which Able Grid began construction near the end of 2020. Controls and software for that one will be provided by Doosan GridTech.

Battery storage 30% cheaper than gas peaker plants for firming renewables
The contest is over. Faster, cheaper, more flexible than gas turbines – battery energy storage must be the future peaking energy service provider of choice, according to a new paper by Australia’s Clean Energy Council.

APRIL 12, 2021 NATALIE FILATOFF

Australia's Clean Energy Council (CEC) says in a newly published paper that large-scale battery energy storage has become the best way to spread energy generated by solar and wind throughout any day, and to instantly respond to peak energy needs in the National Electricity Market (NEM) for long and short durations.

The paper compares the levelized cost of energy delivered by a new 250 MW gas peaker plant with 250 MW four-hour and two-hour grid-scale batteries. It finds that overall – when various costs are calculated – that the batteries are 17% (two-hour) and 30% (four-hour) cheaper.

Improvements in battery-operating technology mean storage now outperforms gas-fired peaking plants on speed and reliability of response, which was the basis of gas technology’s biggest claim to a place in the future renewables-based electricity system.

Where gas plants can respond within 15 minutes, says the CEC report, battery solutions can discharge as “demand (and correspondingly prices) approach peak levels” and sustain output “to cover the typical daily peak duration.”

“Batteries can ramp up quickly, have zero start-up time and provide a better frequency response,” said CEC Chief Executive Kane Thornton.

Strong growth ahead for battery storage

Annual battery storage installations will exceed 10 GW/28 GWh in 2021, following a particularly strong year in 2020, despite the challenges created by the global pandemic, writes IHS Markit analyst Mike Longson. Combined solar and storage will be a core focus for new deployment in 2021, as the front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter energy storage markets are both expected to grow significantly in the months ahead.

APRIL 13, 2021 MIKE LONGSON, ANALYST, IHS MARKIT

Large-scale battery deployment was subdued in the first quarter of 2020, but this slowdown was only temporary, as more than 1 GWh was deployed globally in each subsequent quarter. IHS Markit’s latest company and project database report highlighted the fourth quarter in 2020 as a record-breaking period, with more than 2.2 GWh of installations (not including residential). This brought the total in 2020 to over 5 GWh, compared to 3.2 GWh in the previous year.

Canadian Solar launches US$150 million fundraise to support battery storage growth

ByEdith Hancock May 28, 2021

Solar module manufacturer and developer Canadian Solar has launched a US$150 million fundraise to support its growth strategy and build out a substantial battery energy storage business.

The ‘Solar Module Super League’ member said on Thursday (27 May) that it plans to sell up to US$150 million of its shares through the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Canadian Solar said it intends to use the proceeds from its at-the-market equity offering programme (ATM) to “execute its long-term strategic growth plans” which include both its battery energy storage business and an energy storage project pipeline. It added that this may involve acquiring a business or assets, but also investing in strengthening its existing portfolio of solar projects. The sale is expected to close within roughly six months, with common shares to be offered through sales agent US Tiger Securities, the company said in a statement.

Canadian Solar has turned its attention to the rapidly growing battery energy storage sector this year, and included full-year guidance for battery storage shipments of 810 – 860MWh in its first quarter results last week. The Ontario-based solar technology and renewables group’s battery storage project development pipeline has nearly doubled to 17GWh, with 1.2GWh of projects currently under construction.

LG Energy Solution has said that it was the supplier of battery storage systems and equipment to Vistra Energy’s recently commissioned record-breaking project in Monterey County, California.

17 Jun 2021,

Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility has the world’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) with 300MW / 1,200MWh of lithium-ion batteries. It began operations in December last year, located at the site of a former natural gas power plant owned by Vistra Energy, in the service area of California investor-owned utility Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). Its primary use is helping California reduce its shortfall of electricity at peak times of demand in the evening, charging from the state's cheap and abundant solar PV energy during the day and discharging it when the grid needs it most.

A second phase of the project will add another 100MW / 400MWh within the next few months, while Vistra said the site could later be expanded in size and capacity to host as much as 1,500MW / 6,000MWh of energy storage, should market and economic conditions make that feasible.

South Korean battery and energy storage system manufacturer LG Energy Solution revealed that it supplied the more than 4,500 battery racks installed at the facility, based on its latest model, the TR1300 Transportable Rack. LG said the TR1300 racks are factory pre-assembled prior to shipping, which reduces construction time and installation costs. The racks are also tested before shipment to minimise the amount of onsite testing and commissioning work required.

Equipped with LG Energy Solution’s JH4 high energy cell, the company said that the TR1300 racks could be fitted into the existing turbine halls of the Moss Landing Power Plant due to their ability to be double-stacked, minimising the amount of construction work required that building a bespoke housing for the battery energy storage system (BESS) would have entailed.

Construction begins on UK’s largest storage project
FRV, Harmony Energy, and Tesla are building a 99 MW/198 MWh facility in Essex. The system will rely on the Megapack solution from the U.S. manufacturer.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2021 PILAR SÁNCHEZ MOLINA

Spanish solar project developer, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) – part of UAE-based Abdul Latif Jameel Energy – and British developer Harmony Energy have begun work on the largest battery energy storage project in the United Kingdom.

The 99 MW/198 MWh Clay Tye facility is being constructed near the M25 in Essex and will rely on Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries.

Clay Tye follows the completion of the joint 34 MW/68 MWh Contego battery energy storage facility near Burgess Hill in West Sussex, which has now come online with a system of 28 Tesla Megapack batteries. That was the second project in the U.K. to use the Tesla Megapack, after the Holes Bay project, also developed by FRV and Harmony Energy, in 2020.

“The start-up of [the] Contego plant holds enormous significance for FRV, as it brings us closer to our goal of expanding our portfolio of energy storage projects internationally,” FRV CEO David Menéndez said. “It is the second one we have operating in the United Kingdom while we have another one under construction in Australia. In doing so, we are also making a significant contribution to the evolution towards a more sustainable energy model in the country, one of our strategic objectives as a company.”

The facilities will be connected to the UK Power Networks distribution network, which will allow energy storage and increase the flexibility of the U.K. national grid. “UK Power Networks connected the site to a local electricity substation via a new 1.4km underground cable that involved a 70m directional drill to overcome a special engineering challenge,” UK Power Networks said in a statement. “The company’s switchroom was modified to accommodate the new 33,000-volt circuit needed to import and export electricity from the electricity storage site.”

Non-lithium battery chemistries to grow in importance for stationary energy storage sector – report

Staff Writer | March 15, 2022 |

A new report by IDTechEx estimates that by 2025, over 10% of the stationary energy storage market will be accounted for by non-lithium battery chemistries, up from <5% in 2021.

According to the market analyst, though electric vehicles are the largest market for battery technology and will remain so, the importance of the stationary market will grow and once energy density can be de-prioritized as it can be for stationary storage systems, the choice of battery chemistries and systems will become less restrictive.

“In particular, more long-duration storage is expected to be needed to enable higher penetration levels of variable renewable power sources. Here, lower cost and longer-lasting technologies are needed,” the dossier reads. “Li-ion batteries will likely struggle to profitably exploit electricity price variations over storage periods of 6-8 hours, let alone the days or weeks’ worth of storage that may eventually be needed.”

In IDTechEx’s view, improvements to alternative stationary battery technologies will also help to make them more attractive.

Such improvements are already being carried out by a number of companies that, based on data collected by the UK-based firm, have demonstrated prototypes and rolled out battery systems for early customers.

“Various battery chemistries based on zinc, iron, and other low-cost materials are also being developed and commercialized. Interest in these alternatives can be highlighted by some of the funding raised in 2021 from companies developing these long-duration technologies, including the $200 million for Form Energy’s iron-air, $144 million for Ambri Inc’s high-temperature battery, and $100 million for Enervenue’s nickel-hydrogen hybrid battery,” the report reads.

“Companies developing non-electrochemical storage technologies such as Highview Power and Energy Vault have also raised considerable funding in 2021.”

Image
Source: IDTechEx

IDTechEx’s review predicts that several factors playing against the lithium-ion industry could open opportunities for battery chemistries, and energy storage technologies, that utilize lower cost, more widely available materials and that can also offer additional safety and environmental benefits.

The analyst’s data show that the second half of the 2020s could see lithium, cobalt, and nickel supply disruptions and bottlenecks, while the sector will also have to deal with the ongoing questioning of the safety and environmental credentials of materials throughout the Li-ion supply chain.

“Li-ion will continue to dominate the energy storage space in the short term. For battery electric vehicles, this will continue to be the case even in the long-term as there are few realistic alternatives beyond related chemistries based on silicon and lithium-metal anodes or solid-electrolytes,” the report reads.

But for stationary storage, IDTechEx predicts alternatives to Li-ion are set to play an increasingly important role due to their potential for improving cost and safety, easing material supply burdens, and the often less demanding requirements on energy density in the stationary sector.

U.S. Energy Storage Market sets Q4 Record for New Installations
March 24, 2022 evwind
The U.S. energy storage market set a new record in the fourth quarter of 2021, with new system installations totaling 4,727 megawatt hours (MWh).

According to Wood Mackenzie, a Verisk business (Nasdaq: VSK), and the American Clean Power Association’s (ACP) latest U.S. Energy Storage Monitor report, released today, Q4 2021 saw more capacity installed than in the first three quarters combined, despite project delays.

Annual deployments of grid-scale storage nearly tripled year-over-year to 3 gigawatts (GW) / 9.2 gigawatt hours (GWh). Despite a record year, the grid-scale market didn’t meet expectations in 2021, with supply chain challenges delaying more than 2 GW of capacity into 2022 and 2023. Wood Mackenzie forecasts that supply chain pressures and delays within interconnection queue processing will persist through 2024.

Zinc joins battery race in the US

Staff Writer | May 17, 2022

US battery maker Urban Electric Power is set to supply an initial 4,550 MWh of its rechargeable zinc alkaline batteries over the next five years to solar and energy storage project developer Pine Gate Renewables.

Through a memorandum of understanding, the companies have set their objective to be supporting Pine Gate’s growing pipeline of solar-coupled and standalone energy storage projects across the United States. At present, Pine Gate has over 1 GW of operating solar assets in the country with over 16 GW in active development.

Urban Electric Power, on the other hand, has a battery assembling factory in Pearl River, New York, and supplies both homes and commercial clients through its Ohm label, and utility-scale infrastructure projects through its Zeus label.
....................

The firm’s alkaline zinc manganese dioxide battery has been in development since 2012 by researchers at City College of New York. It is considered fire-safe for indoor installations in cities as it is not subject to thermal runaway, a common issue in lithium-ion batteries. It is also considered more ESG-friendly than its lithium counterparts as it doesn’t contain the white metal, cobalt or lead.

The battery has been tested and proven for large-scale uses such as in the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and at commercial-industrial locations to offer backup power and dispatchable energy storage to the power grid.
