.........
By 1926 the Bureau had settled on the Cliffside structure or Bush Dome in Potter County, Texas, a few miles west and north of Amarillo, as the most likely prospect. Investigation indicated that the gas field covered approximately 50,000 acres, helium concentration was at 1.8 %, the structure was isolated from the rest of the Panhandle gas field by a geologic dip or fault, and ownership lay with only a few large landowners making gas rights negotiations relatively easy.

Negotiations soon began for government ownership of the gas rights to the 50,000-acre field in the interest of national defense. Although rights were secured for most of the field in a short period of time, negotiations over rights to the entire structure dragged on until well into the 1930s. Meanwhile, the government bought 18 acres seven miles west of Amarillo for the new helium extraction plant site. Groundbreaking took place in August of 1928, a pipeline was built from the Cliffside field eleven miles to the north, and the plant began operations in April of 1929 with the first refined batch of helium shipped a month later on May 6.

The United States quickly became the producer of 90% of the world’s supply of helium and the advent of WWII in the 1940s greatly increased demand for the product. Shipping helium at 2,500 psi was a problem from the beginning, when it was either shipped by specially designed rail cars or in small specially designed tanks. By the early 1950s, Jack B. Kelley of Amarillo who had been transporting some of the very small tanks as cargo developed a unique tank truck that could safely transport the gas using tanker trucks. Over the next 30 years or so his firm was essentially the only company in the nation capable of hauling exotic gases at extremely high pressures.

By the early 1960s the Cliffside structure, after 30 years of production, was becoming partially depleted. As a result, the Helium Acts Amendment of 1960 (Public law 86-777) was enacted in order for the Bureau of Mines to allow private plants to be built for the extraction of helium from natural gas. That law resulted in the building of five helium extraction facilities within the largest region of helium rich gas fields that roughly encompassed portions of southern Kansas as well as the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. Included in that region are the gas fields of Hugoton, Keyes, Greenwood, and Panhandle. Additionally, the Bureau of Mines approved a 425-mile pipeline beginning near Bushton, Kansas, to the Cliffside facility at Amarillo to act as a gathering system for the new extraction plants. The raw helium produced by those plants is transported by the pipeline and injected into the Cliffside structure for storage until it can be extracted and refined to a pure helium state.

By 1995 more than a billion cubic meters of raw helium had been stored in the reserve, although the operation had created a debt of $1.4 billion for the project. As a result the U.S. Congress in 1996 passed the Helium Privatization Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-273), which directed the U.S. Department of the Interior to empty the reserve. Sales to the government and government contractors only opened in 1998 and sales on the open market began in 2003. The process paid off the program indebtedness and sales have continued from the reserve to the present.

Although the Cliffside helium extraction facility, with its service to a huge region, has been by far the largest project of its kind in the United States, there are several other smaller facilities in the nation. Among those are isolated gas fields in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, where for the most part helium is in the five to six percent range and the gas is not associated with hydrocarbons as it is in the original discoveries. Thus far oil and gas operators in the Permian Basin have not produced wells capable of helium production, but with all the changing technology and enhanced capabilities of the industry who knows what the future holds.

Located along Tanzania’s East African Rift System, Noble Helium’s 4 projects are being advanced according to the highest ESG benchmarks to serve the increasing supply chain fragility and supply-demand imbalance for this scarce, tech-critical and high-value industrial gas.

Its flagship North Rukwa Project has an independently certified, summed un-risked mean prospective helium resource of 176 billion cubic feet (equivalent to about 30 years’ supply). The project lies within the Rukwa Basin, which has the potential to be the world’s third largest helium reserve behind the US and Qatar.

Noble Helium’s Wood tells Mining.com.au that the company remains on track to drill its first 2 wells at its North Rukwa Project in Tanzania in Q3 2023. The wells will target structures with a combined mean prospective helium resource of 16.5Bcf within the East African Rift System. Both wells are Basin Margin Fault Closure (BMFC) plays.

Image

To date, BMFC plays have a proven 100% discovery rate from 14 oil and gas exploration wells in other basins of the East African Rift System in Uganda and Kenya. Additionally, it has commissioned the first ever Helium Atlas, with an exclusive 5-year agreement allowing the company to identify additional prospective areas to target for diversification.

On 14 June, Noble Helium received a major vote of confidence from the Tanzanian government with the renewal of 6 exploration permits at its North Rukwa Helium Project by the Tanzanian Mining Commission. The prospecting licenses were awarded an initial 4-year term in 2019 and were due to expire in July 2023. As per the mining code, the next term is for 3 years with the facility to extend to a third term of an additional 2 years.

The company has the right under the Tanzanian Mining Act to convert its prospecting licenses to mining licences following discovery.

North American Helium Successfully Brings Newest Helium Facilities into Production
NAH continues to grow helium production from non-hydrocarbon sources with addition of two new facilities in Saskatchewan and establishes new $75 million credit facility

February 27, 2023 CALGARY, Alberta BUSINESS WIRE

North American Helium Inc. (“NAH” or the “Company”) today announced that in late 2022 and January of 2023 it successfully brought two additional helium purification facilities on production. One facility is located approximately 20km southeast of Consul, Saskatchewan and the second is located approximately 15km southwest of Eastend, Saskatchewan.

Commenting on this operational achievement, Mr. Marlon McDougall, President and COO stated, “In early 2022 we indicated that we planned to double helium production during 2022. With the commissioning of these newest helium production facilities, we’ve done that. NAH now has five helium production facilities in operation and this sets the Company up to significantly grow production again in 2023. Including volumes from these latest helium production facilities, our current production is in excess of 110 MMcf/y.” Mr. McDougall continued:

“We have been very deliberate in our exploration and development planning, including pre-ordering long-lead equipment, so we can efficiently tie-in new wells and begin marketing new helium volumes to customers in this tight supply environment. As we continue to execute on our growth strategy, the Company plans to market approximately 60 MMcf/y of additional helium volumes throughout 2023.”

NON-HYDROCARBON SOURCED HELIUM CONTRACTED ON LONG-TERM AGREEMENT WITH LINDE

Commenting on the growing production volumes now on long-term contract, Mr. Nicholas Snyder, Chairman and CEO stated, “We are pleased to be working with Linde, the world’s largest industrial gas company, as the primary off-taker of the helium production from our newest facilities. Bringing two new production facilities online in consecutive months is a result of our increased levels of investment across our business over the last 18 months. We are now operating on a scale where there are multiple prospects getting ready to drill, new discoveries undergoing additional development drilling, and new production facilities coming online each year. It’s a continuous process to bring predictability and reliability to this business in a way that hasn’t previously been seen from the upstream helium sector.

As we continue to grow, we expect to become a larger part of the helium supply picture in North America, and ultimately a major global producer. We believe our non-hydrocarbon sustainable helium supply is more attractive to industrial gas distributors and also helium end-users not only because of their own emissions reduction goals but also because we have shown our operations to be more reliable than some hydrocarbon-linked helium projects. The location of our projects, both in terms of access to logistics and taking into account the current geopolitics, is a clear differentiator.”

GROWING HELIUM PRODUCTION PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR SPOT SALES

NAH has historically contracted substantially all of its helium production on long-term contracts with gas distributors. In order to assist end-users of helium during this latest shortage, NAH now plans to keep a portion of its supply available for sale in the spot market. Beginning in early 2023, customers will have the option to purchase spot loads of high purity helium gas or liquid to meet their critical business needs.

South Africa’s Virginia Gas Project Produces First Helium

January 26, 2023

South Africa-based renewables firm, Renergen, has announced the first production of liquid helium at its Virginia Gas Plant, located in the Free State Province of the Southern African country.

In a press statement, Stefano Marani, CEO of Renergen, stated that “Having the helium plant in operation and producing liquid helium is a truly spectacular achievement,” adding that, “All components of the Phase 1 plant are now in operation, and South Africa joins the ranks of only eight countries in the world to produce this rare and valuable liquid.”

The Virginia Gas Project represents South Africa’s first commercial-scale liquefied natural gas plant, with the milestone of first production positioning Renergen as South Africa’s first helium producer. According to Marani, “This milestone is a major catalyst [both] for Renergen and South Africa.”

With South Africa consuming approximately 200kg of helium per day, according to Renergen, the liquid helium produced from the Virginia plant will be predominantly used for exports to meet global demand, with countries such as the U.S. consuming roughly 35,000 kgs of helium per day, comparatively.

The company’s liquid helium module has a production capacity of 350kg a day, and is set to be expanded from 2026 with the company earmarking between R12 billion and R15 billion for the expansion project.

With the Virginia Gas Project site estimated to hold between 30 and 344 billion cubic feet of helium reserves and the global helium market anticipated to expand from $2.7 billion in 2021 to $3.9 billion by 2031, South Africa is expected to play a crucial role in the rare commodities sector for years to come.
